Title: Ham by zip code
Post by: W4USC on June 18, 2010, 12:09:12 PM
Several weeks ago I ran across a link to a web site where you could type in a zip code and a map would come up showing all hams in that zip code with a dot showing their actual street location.
---------
I can find a listing of hams in my zip code but I can't find the link that shows the actual locations of all hams in a zip code.
---------
Dose anyone know how to pull this map up? ???
 Thanks
W4USC

http://www.vanityhq.com/

Click on "N4MC's Ham Locator" on the left side of the screen.

It was interesting looking at the number of hams in a zip code when compared to the population in that area.

For my zip code the ham incidence is .0032. (3.2 hams per thousand). I tried a few other zip codes at random and saw an incidence between 2.3 and 1.2 per thousand).

If someone had the access to run an automated query of the results it would be enlightening to see the nationwide trends. Just from my very limited sampling this may shed some light on why the 4's are so numerous.

Good links there! I just knew about fellow hams by their towers. Now I see there's a fellow General in my Townhome complex. ;)

LOL, I found out that one of my neighbors who was busted for stealing my air conditioning unit for the value of the copper is also a ham.

I will be looking for him at a local club meeting and introduce him to a 1500 watt suppository.

In my area at least , the vanityhq map is not real up-to-date . Still a useful resource , but overlooks callsign changes that happened  over a year ago .

On edit , when I went back and clicked the button to "use latest FCC data " instead of the default "cached " setting , everything's as it should be . I shoulda known Michael wasn't slacking that bad .

Just read about this one on the ARRL website, http://wm1ke.us/fcc_index.html (http://wm1ke.us/fcc_index.html). Nice export to Excel feature

There is also a site for looking up sexual predators.  I looked up the hams in my neighborhood and then the sexual predators.  The predators greatly outnumbered the hams.  I didn't bother to check for crossovers between the two groups.

One thing not mentioned--the maps show the locations of their mailing addresses!  It probably isn't any great number of them, but you can't depend on the map--both because it may be out of date, AND may not show their actual home locations.

N4MC Vanity HQ is now shut down.

Wow, that's a shame; it was a great resource.

If you go to radioreference.com , the Amatuer radio data base section is the place to find  licensed operators by last name, call sign and by zip code .

I tried this but all I got was a blank white page when I did a ZIP search.
