Title: 706 Remote head
Post by: N5KEG on January 31, 2011, 01:54:36 PM
I have a fair mobile setup with an Icom 706.  Since I stay in a travel trailer during the week, I would like to operate from inside the trailer of course.     Is it possible to "lengthen" the seperation cable?  Is there a better way to do it without a big expense?     I am able to run a cord outside if thats the most efficent way.
Thanks
Mark, N5KEG

Years ago when I was running a 706 in my mobile, I set up an extended separation cable. I made a cable of 35' by cutting the standard cable and extending it with a shielded center section. I also added chokes at both ends. This cable ran to my upstairs den and the 706 head sat on a coffee table. I connected the mike and keyer paddle through the RJ-45 connector and it worked great. Even at 500w there was no RF interference to the operation of the head.

I don't know what the limit would be for extending the cable, but my installation worked well.
