Title: Anyone have a WPE Call Sign?
Post by: ONAIR on December 04, 2011, 11:28:26 PM
I remember way back in the day (1960s), Popular Electronics magazine issued WPE call signs to readers who were SWLs.  Did anyone else get (or still remember) them?

I never had one but they were a brilliant marketing idea by Popular Electronics Magazine. I think you'll still find a few SWLs online signing posts with their old WPE-type call letters with great fondness. They were similar to the SWL calls officially issued by some European countries then.

I understand that they also confer transmitting authority on one or two fixed channels on 20 meters.  :)

Interesting.  I just did a search on Google for WPE call signs, and found a number of very interesting websites!

Back in January 1960 Popular Electronics issued me WPE2CJJ and by
August, 1960 the FCC issued a Novice Ticket for WV2ONH

Well, at age 13, when I found out that I could transmit with a
ham license ... and the rest was history! (and so much fun!)

I too investigated the WPE program on the internet and found that some guy is selling customized duplicate replacement WPE certificates on flea-bay.  It is item number 250914475594.

I'm not aware of any on-line archive.
A friend who picked-up a bunch of old copies at a flea market happened to acquire the issue in whihc the picture of my listening shack appeared, so I have a scan of it.

Looking for a place to frame and display it among all my contest certificates.

I actually got mine from the PE guy who ran the program, but after Popular Electronics discontinued giving them out. He changed the prefix from WPE to WDX. I had a certificate for WDX8KVS. I wonder what happened to that....oh well, still have all the QSL cards from those listening days. Too bad there are hardly any broadcast SW stations now.

From the early 60s...WPE2DOY....even had QSL cards!  It was a 'early issue' hand written 'callsign' on the certificate.  Later ones were typed-in. I got my Novice about a year later!

Yes! I have the Popular Electronics SWL Call Sign WPE7RV issued in 1959 as I recall. Wish I still had that Certificate!

Just before that I earned my Novice ticket, KN7GFP but, never got on the air with that license. SWLing was an alternative. A few years later I again licensed as a Novice, WN7PXI, upgraded to Technician, KA7ORT and now hold a General Class license, N7GTE.

The '60s were the good old days of SWLing. I loved listening to many of those now silent International Broadcasters. One in particular I listened to was ELWA in Monrovia, Liberia. The World Radio Handbook was the SWLs "bible". Great times and fond memories.

I just found this forum and am reminded of some very happy years of SWL'ing beginning in 1960 when "Santa" brought me a Heathkit AR-3 for Christmas.  I was immediately hooked.  A few of my friends and I formed a small radio club, and within 4 years it had a large membership including a significant international contingent - some of whom later became amateur operators like me, and whom I have looked up and had some wonderful conversations with.  My WPE callsign was WPE3EAI, and I still have my Shortwave Monitor Certificate hanging on my shack wall (now W3MRL), signed by Hank Bennett.  I also still have one of my original QSL cards which I had printed up with my spare "allowance" money (which in those days we actually had to perform chores around the house to "earn").  I also have many of the old QSL cards I collected from the international broadcasters, and have scanned to computer because, sadly, they are greatly deteriorated from age.  Please contact me if you recall these days, or even better, if you were a member of the original Folcroft Radio Club or DX-International, which it later became.  73 and good DX - Mike Larcombe (good on QRZ.com).

WPE8HSM. I have a picture of my first novice station on my QRZ homepage and I think the certificate to the right of the WWII plane is the certificate. I know the piece of wood below the picture has both my novice call and my WPE call. The current picture of the shack has the receiver I built and used Knight kit Span Master and the first "already built" radio I bought a Hallicrafters S119 on the top shelf. Both are connected and both work as the did 50 years ago.

Same here.  I thought about it but didn't really see the point.  I was a member of the American SW Listeners Club, however, and I often submitted reception reports.  Many of the same folks are still monitoring the SW bands over 40 years later.  A few years ago I saw some reports by Stewart McKenzie who was the President of the club.  He was from Huntington Beach.  I won't forget those days.  They were a lot of fun and I learned a lot on my own.

I received the Popular Electronics SWL call WPE1EJL back around 1960. With the Popular Electronics call, I had SWL cards printed and received many Short-Wave Broadcast Station replies including a local ham who became my Elmer and helped me obtain the FCC Novice Call of KN1FPV. The rest is history!

Oh! My receiver was an old Knight Kit Span Master that is still working today! I've had to fix it a few times, but it still works and believe it or not, I still use it today, mostly for BC reception....but it works great on Short-Wave too!

WPE4MZ.  I got in when they were issuing the 1 by 2 calls.  My parents moved while I was in Army Basic Training; they even packed my telephone which in those days was hard wired to the wall and belonged to the phone company.  Dad claimed the certificate was in a box somewhere but I never saw it again.  It took a while to get a real callsign but I finally made it.

And it only lasted about 10 years or so, with the successor WDX hanging in there for another 2-3 years.  It didn't survive the mid '70s IIRC.

Mine was WPE9JZT, received the same week as I received my Novice license (WN9EAZ) in May 1970.  I never bothered to "upgrade" it to WDX since wasn't official anyway.

WPE6BXD circa late 1950's back in Bakersfield.  Used and old, old Delco console SW/AM radio.  Too big for my bedroom, so I took the chassis out of the cabinet.  Hung the speaker up on a wall corner next to it.  BTW, Delco stood for Dayton Engineering Laboratories Company...  Kept my bedroom warm on Winter mornings.

Yes!

I was given the "call" WPE7DK about 1959 at age 11 while living in Hermiston, Oregon. Got my Novice the next year (KN7NID) followed by the General a year later with new call K7QQH - have had it ever since, and am VERY active on the HF bands running everything from a QRP K1 (mobile install) to a kw. I work ONLY CW...

I've got to check those old Popular Electronics archives.  I believe that the WPE call signs were listed in the magazine, along with the names of the certificate holders!  :)

Back in the late 50's, I got my WPE1EJL and that ultimately got me a QSL from a local ham who taught me code and gave me the books to study and get my Ham license. Now, 53+ years later, I still enjoy SWLing though the number of stations has diminished but it is still fun. Still a fun hobby in my retirement!
