Title: DX Year in Review - 2012
Post by: KY6R on December 05, 2012, 08:23:26 PM
JAN - drove to Portland, OR and picked up a 55' tower and drove it back [inside] my BMW X3
JAN - put up A3S - at 45', replacing 20M Moxon that was on a push up mast at 30'
MAR - worked EP for #326 - [surprise QSO]
MAY - worked 7O6T and E40VB, #327 and #328 - both surprise QSO's
JUN - drove up to Nevada City to get two old piles of aluminum
SEP - worked Z81D for #329 and another total surprise activation / QSO
OCT - completely rebuilt antenna farm - 17M stack that also works well on 20M, 15/10M yagi
and 12M Moxon. Reason - wanted an antenna up at full 55' with no traps
DEC - worked ZL9HR for #330

Last December I was trying to work E44PM with no joy. I had also missed ST0R that year. In
         fact, I hadn't worked an ATNO for over a year - SEP 2010 [ZS8M].

What a difference a year makes - and 4 out of 6 that I worked were total surprises without big announcements.

Looking forward to #331 in 2013, and welcome the surprise!

Most excellent, and thanks again for 7O6T. That was an all time surprise and favorite!

A year with 5 new entities when you're above 320 is impressive!

I'll never get anywhere near 300, but that is neither here
nor there, but I did OK for 2012.

Nauru
Malpelo
Pitcarin Is.
Congo
St Paul Is.
Comoros
Uzbekistan
Chad &
St Peter/Paul Rocks.

And maybe if I get REAL lucky...Auckland Island.

I missed Yemen & Somalia due to illness.

262 worked/260 confirmed in 6 years.

I had a great year with 9 ATNO's to finish (so far) at 319...

Really disappointed that I missed PT0S which would have given me 320.

Still hunting for the Vatican, Mt Athos and those pesky rocks like
FT8Z, 3Y/B, FT/J and of course KP1.

Not a bad ATNO year here.

3D2C
6O0CW and 6O3A
7P8D
A71BU and A71AM
E40VB
HK0NA
HS0ZJU
JX9JKA
KH8PPG
P29NI and P29VCX
RI1FJ
T30PY
TT8TT

Now, if the Sun Gods return, maybe ZL9HR. :)

Three new ones for me this year. HK0NA, 7O6T and ZL9HR, but now there's nothing on the horizon (at least publicly) until Heard. Still hunting for the one op on Wake but nada spotted of late. Also hoping Simon is successful in XZ, too and the rumours of San Felix coming back would do the trick...just four more for Honor Roll on this end.

In my opinion, you are doing a terrific job considering the modest station and the other issues you must deal with.

I think the best thing you have working for you is your mental attitude. I'm impressed with how you have stuck with the hobby despite not being able to work some big expeditions which other stations nearby have worked. I think someone not as dedicated might have called it quits by now.

I don't see any reason why you can't hit the 300 mark based on the list of countries you have worked this year. All you need is some time and some decent conditions.

The SFI taking a plunge under 100 during the expedition is what is really hampering your ability to work ZL9HR. I worked them Saturday, December 1st on 10 meter phone and they were right at my noise level.  I show a SFI of 113 but I can't make out from my log if it applies to 11/29 or 12/1. Nevertheless, if we had a SFI of 150 and 10 meters was wide open I have no doubt you'd have worked them. The poor conditions are pulling you down to lower and lower bands were your dipole at 20 feet is better suited for regional work and not DX.

With enough time and some decent conditions, I see no reason why you can't hit 300 countries based on the list of countries you have worked this year.

Good luck and keep plugging away!

73,

Chris/NU1O

It was an AMAZING year.  I went from 286 to 307.  Almost all were DXpeditions.  A few were "finally the prop was right" like VR2XMT.

Our fellow hams have been very active on DXpeditions (and I am very grateful!).

ATNO for 2012:

4W0VB
HK0NA
VK0TH
TN2T
XU7AEL
7O6T
SV2ASP/A
A5A
VR2XMT
CY9M
TT8TT
5U8NK
V85SS
3C6A
3C0E
PT0S
ZL9HR
3D2C
D64K
VU7M
P29NI

Lamenting the ones I missed:

XX9
9M0
Mayotte
Iran
Marion Island
Christmas Island
Laos

In general propagation was pretty good...especially on the upper bands.  Low band prop, especially 160, was not that great.  Of course, 2009 (my first season on 160) is my yardstick...and everyone agrees that 2009 season was one of the best ever.  I am finally at 8BDXCC on LoTW, just need another 15 on 160 for 9BDXCC.  Slow but persistent is the name of the game.

Finally had some time to work some EME DX on 144 MHz into EU.  What a rush with a single 9 element yagi, manually pointing it and adjusting every 10 minutes.

Set up remote capabilities and really got a chance to work them during several road trips.  It's fun to break pileups from the hotel room in the evenings before going to bed.

Snagged some EU DX on 6 with a 5 element yagi in the trees at 30 feet.[/li][/list]

Did some QRP DX work, got through to 4O3A with 500 milliwatts on 20 CW.  9000 miles per watt!

Looking forward to 2013.  I admit it is an obsession for me, not just a hobby.

DX IS!

And now I must point out that 2012 isn't over yet! I worked my 25th ATNO this year - Afghanistan (T6LG) last night.

I couldn't believe how loud he was on 40! I've got him on a few bands already and he uploads to LoTW regularly. You should see your Q up there in a week or so.

He was louder a couple of nights ago. But nonetheless he has been good these past few nights.

Now if I could get Svein on Jan Mayen I would be a happy camper. :)

6 brand new spankin ATNOs

HK0NA -- Malpelo
FW0NAR -- Futuna
7O6T -- Yemen
NH8S -- Swains
PT0S -- St Pete/Paul Rox
and unexpectedly, just this morning:
ZL9HR -- Campbell -- very weak copy on 20 meters at 5:50 am EST, was a real strain to make him out, but we hooked'em to wrap up the year....
Would have been more if it weren't for lack of time, lack of a big signal, and lack of sunspots.....From a DXing standpoint, though, it was a good year...

V
KA3NRX

P.S. Nice to work TT8TT, 3D2C, and TN2T (among a few others that  I can't remember) for some already confirmed extra gravy.

I don't know if I can remember a year so abundant with ATNOs.  It was like getting Christmas and birthday presents every 2 months!

3D2C
7O6T
HK0NA
ST0R
T8XX
ZL9HR

In the Finally Confirmed After a Couple of Years category:
JX9JKA
RI1FJ
SV2ASP/A

When all is said and done, I'll be sitting at 314 (323)... a place I never thought I'd be when I first worked KG4 as a Novice in '78.

Frank, W1NK

(Now, if only I could get a card out of UM20Y...)

2 ATNO here in 2012-7O and E4, which is better than most recent years-other than getting "newly created countries" like the 4 PJs in 2010.  7O and E4 have both been aruond for a while.

Did get quite a few new band countries, like 5T and ZL9 for 30m, TT on 15m, D2 on 17 and 20m, and lots of new stuff on 12m and RTTY.

Lets hope 2013 is even more productive-but we will see.

There are some pretty impressive lists here, congrats to everyone.  I hope 2013 brings a bunch more ATNO's for everyone.  The year isn't over with yet but counting down.
