Title: AFRICA, AFRICA AFRI..............
Post by: AF3Y on February 10, 2013, 08:27:04 AM
Good GRIEF Charlie Brown ::).........  Cant someone activate something besides AFRICA (or a few Carribean stations I could reach with 2 cans and a string)?  This sucks.

E3 and/or the French Islands would be nice. Rest of the mainland?  Doesnt everyone have all of them?????

BORED and wanting an ATNO in FLORIDA 8)

The AfricanFest won't be over soon ;)  There are three more large-scale dxpeditions yet to be activated - J52, XT, and 9U.

Do you have ANYTHING that you need besides Heard on this list:  http://www.ng3k.com/misc/adxo.html

I'm still having fun working ATNOs.  One day I will be in your situation waiting a long time for ATNOs.

I just got 5X8C on my first try on 20M SSB. I cannot recall the last time I did that for a DXpedition.

Anyway, it's a new one.

Congrats Vinnie!  I've noticed that the pile ups are not as bad as some of the previous dxpeditions.  Take advantage of it now and GL ;D

Gene:

I feel so embarrassed. For some reason I am still missing 9X on SSB. I have them confirmed on CW/RTTY but not that elusive SSB. I have everything else in Africa. Once I get them on SSB that will give me #329 on SSB. Could still use E3 on CW and RTTY. The 9X0PY operation was a bust for me as he didn't bring a mic....Even though I am stuck at 328, I am not complaining, just waiting for the islands to the east of Africa to be activated... Oh well it is only a hobby....

Embarrassed, huh?  Yeah, I hear you... hi  hi  As my favorite President would say "I feel your pain"! 8)

I did listen to the 5x on 80 cw for a while. (I do need them on 80) Too weak with a pretty good dose of QSB to boot.  Maybe some other time.

GL on the 9X.  I dont blame the 9X0PY guys for no mic tho. I try my best to avoid using one.

The more I hear about those who attain honor roll, the more i wonder if i am not blessed to only have 180 countries confirmed  :) I remember the let down after I finally got 100, and I cannot imagine getting 300, but once I do what will be left?  i know, there is always QRP, new entities, 10 band DXCC, other modes, but still...

why is it that when you are on the journey the goal seems to be everything and once you reach the goal, you talk about the greatness of the journey  ???  ;)

then again, since ATNO's are so much comparatively more valuable to someone with 300+ already confirmed, I imagine they are EXTREMELY sweet to attain -- so much so that only those at that level know how it feels.

meanwhile, for me it's back to trying to get more of Africa confirmed.  73  :)

Congrats on DXCC on 80M - now you have to go for 160M!

Now THAT'S the the best time to work the DX - when he just starts calling CQ, and before someone spots him and brings the rest of the world crashing in!
From here, Africa is truly the "Dark Continent", and many in this part of the world don't have many countries worked there. I've been able to work most of Africa the past few years, but curiously, have worked relatively few stations in South Africa.
The plethora of African activations are great for band fills, and for those chasing the CQ DX Marathon.

10 is in fairly good shape today, at least here on the East Coast. 3B8/HB9ARY gave me a call after I worked a German station and I made my first contact with 5X8C on 10 CW today.  With the short winter days it takes awhile for 10 to open up.  The band did not really open up until 1500 UTC. I have been on 10 since 1400.  My tower is still at about 30 to 35 feet from the blizzard.

Well for those of us NOT in Florida and can't see Africa out our front window ;) I like the idea of having AF activiated. There are still a bunch of AF countries I still need and I, for one, like to hear AF on as much as possible. Now I can almost say your story but substitute JA vice AF :) I can work JA almost anytime, day or night from my QTH.

Ahh, W5DQ, I remember my time in central CA well 25 years ago.  It was the peak of that cycle in 1979, and I remember working JA and UA0 on Saturday night in the CQ WW DX SSB and CW contests on 15 meters at midnight local.  With a dipole at 20 feet and 100 watts.  EU was difficult from there, but every time I called CQ I had several JA or UA0 stations coming back to me.  I miss that.  A lot.  Would I trade the (sort of) chip-shot to Africa from East Coast?  No.  But I remember those times fondly.  The Pacific seemed like a big pond, and nothing was out of reach into Asia.

HA0NAR has given me 6W on all 3 WARC bands in the past couple of days for 3 new band countries!  I don't think Senegal has been authorized to use the WARC bands for very long.  Now to get the 5X, 9U and XT for some new band and RTTY countries.

If you are tired of Africa, it looks like there are quite a few Pacific DXpeditions coming up in the next few months.  I already have the pacific closed out for countries, but still need 6O on the continent of Africa, plus quite a few of the Islands, including ZD9, 3C0, ZS8, 3Y0B, VK0H, FR/G, and all of the FT5s.

Still like that but looks like I'll be a bit closer to AF in a short few years if all goes the course we've laid out. We're planning to retire back to Northeast Texas in 5 or so years (maybe sooner if the CA economy tanks like it is on the verge of doing). Then I'll be in the thick of the annual 6M 'bloodbath' I sit and watch with great desire every summer Es season. HF should be much better too as I need many EU and AF areas still.
