eHam Forums / Elmers / IRLP interface board-needed or not?

Yeah, I know how it works, I just didn't know if it was proprietary or not.
The closest node is about 55 miles away-and it's 70cm, which I don't have a radio for. There's only one 2-meter node in the entire state.

I noticed the only 2 meter IRLP node in the state was about 300 miles west of here. There's a weekly net I've been wanting to participate in, but it's IRLP-only, so I can't get in. I looked into setting up a node here, but the board costs $85. Is the board really necessary, or is it just an expensive soundcard interface?

eHam Forums / Licensing / New Tech Pool to be Trimmed by 140 Questions

I passed the test when I was a preteen, and I had no trouble understanding any of the questions. I don't think the test needs any dumbing down, nor does the pool need to be reduced. Maybe the test doesn't need to be harder-that would turn away potential newcomers-but if they can't be bothered to study a bit more, do you think they're going to really care/stick with it?
The current test is fine and needs to be left as it is. If they feel compelled to tweak it, make it more difficult with more amateur practice questions. I see a lot of complaints about 2 meter CB slang-maybe we could be louder about that.
