122  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: I wish to be clear about IRCs.... on: March 03, 2013, 11:54:27 AM
Ok, never mind....Looks like I am pretty much screwed as the IRCs I have are old as of last month....I have the Nairobi model which I am under the impression expired on January 31...and the ARRL site says that has changed to the Doha model...Got to now check the green stamp till.... Roll Eyes Angry....what a waste....I guess these IRCs I have now are useless and can't be exchanged???.....any way, I am still curious as to where to get the new IRCs now that the post office is (as usual) unreliable......

123  eHam Forums / DXing / I wish to be clear about IRCs.... on: March 03, 2013, 10:28:53 AM
They are still being used and can still be redeemed, correct???...Its just that the US Post Office is no longer selling them?Huh.....and can they be purchased elsewhere, say on-line somewhere?......Please respond as I have 5 IRCs (all current) to use and I'd like to use them if they are still being redeemed in the modern postal world.....Please advise...

124  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: Vatican ops and a new pope? on: February 28, 2013, 05:37:57 AM
I smoked a balun once does that count?

REPLY: Only if the balun was on top of the Sistine Chapel..... Cool.....anyway, as far as Vatican activity goes, like I said before, you guys would have to get in touch with IK0FVC...not sure what kind of life sked he has, but it's worth a shot.....don't know if you knew this, but the Vatican station is not located within the walls of the actual Vatican....it's located in the North American Potifical College which is just southeast of the Vatican walls (still considered Vatican property).....Always has been too, even back during the HV3SJ days......
125  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: Vatican ops and a new pope? on: February 28, 2013, 03:59:22 AM
Wouldn't it be great to have a special events station operate in the Vatican to celebrate the election of a new pope? Just saying. :-)

I would think the perfect time for a station to operate from the Vatican would be during the conclave, or after the new pope has been elected. A special event station commemorating the election might not be a bad idea.

The Vatican will be packed with tourists and reporters at those times and I don't know if that throws a monkey wrench into the idea but I agree with you. It's packed with tourists once a week when the pope says Mass from St. Peter's sqaure.  I got within 20 feet of Pope Benedict and it was quite a thrill.

Maybe one of the Italian members of this forum can comment on the idea. I only have the Vatican worked on 2 bands but no LoTW.

73,

Chris/NU1O

So are they going to let the magic smoke out of their radios when the new Pope is elected just like the conclave will???

Sorry for the irreverent Lutheran humor...

You haven't fully experienced the ham radio world until you burn up a radio (like I did in my infancy in the 80's)......Don't think the smoke from it signaled the future of a major world entity like the Catholic Church though.......only that I needed more experience putzing around with stuff I should not be putzing around with...... Shocked Roll Eyes......AMEN to that!

Francesco IK0VFC is the guy you want to mention that too......I don't recall if they did a sp event station when Ben 16 came on board, but there was a special callsign from Vatican station commemorating the anniversary of Radio Vaticanna a couple of years ago.......Viva Papa!.....

128  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: CONGRATS!....CONGRATS!!!......CONGRATS!!!!...... on: February 27, 2013, 08:52:26 AM
LOL....I was wondering what the reaction would be.....too funny.....don't take it the wrong way, but I was just poking a bit of fun at what I observe to be a bit of overusage of the acronym on the thread every time someone seems to bag an ATNO or such.......Like I said, all in good fun......and by the way.....before I forget....CONGRATS!!!!!...... Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy........

130  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: PT0S qsl cards on: February 25, 2013, 10:42:18 AM
With ZL9HR cards out in the mail and peeps receiving them (per what I have been seeing on the DX Summit) without notice on their website, I would presume that PT0S can't be far behind, BUT one never knows.....Keep checking the mail boxes I guess and be patient (yeah, sure right..... Roll Eyes.... Shocked.....)....

131  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / RE: RM Italy BLA 350 -- Overpriced???? on: February 25, 2013, 03:56:47 AM
Yeah I saw the $800 price tag on-line.....then I put my eyeballs back in their sockets.....I am sorry, but for an amp that only puts out 300 watts max, those prices seem excessive.....perhaps I am naieve about this because I never owned an amp of any kind, but this is JMO, and I am sticking to it....

132  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / RM Italy BLA 350 -- Overpriced???? on: February 24, 2013, 04:42:21 PM
I was at a hamfest today, and I saw a nice compact RM Italy BLA 350 Amplifier for sale, brand new from a vendor in Lebanon, PA who made the trip to Pittsburgh for this small hamfest......When I asked the price, the dude told me $675.00.....Bearing in mind that this amp has only a 300w power output, my jaw dropped to the floor.....Can someone please tell me what the going price is for an amp that maxes out in the midpower ranges???.....I am finding it hard to believe that something with that low a power output could be so expensive......someone please verify.....Thanks....

133  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: JY5HX - has anyone rcvd QSL recently? on: February 24, 2013, 05:30:04 AM
Sent card out for a spring 2011 qso with green stamps and still havn't received anything.....the trouble with sending qsl cards (w/money) to that part of the world is you run the risk of having your mail pilfered......got Jordan confirmed a couple of times, so it's no big deal from that standpoint, but it still would have been a nice one to get as some extra gravey.....

134  eHam Forums / DXing / FYI...ZL9HR QSL Cards are..... on: February 20, 2013, 09:46:47 AM
...apparently going out....was dicking around on the DX Summit announcement section, and I noticed quite a few receive acknowledgments and TNX from people who received the card..........all of them appeared to be in EU....one of the posts said the card was more like a booklet (a la VP6DX perhaps?).....So it looks like the cards are in the mail....went to the web site for verification, but the latest post was 2/2/12, with no info on cards......Thought yinz might like to know......so keep checking the mailbox...you may get a nice surprise soon!...... Shocked....

135  eHam Forums / SWL (Shortwave Listening) / RE: Remember SWLing when it was fun? on: February 19, 2013, 09:38:35 AM
Remember the days when:

1.  Radio Moscow used to send you "awards"?
2.  Radio Peking existed?
3.  The woodpecker?
4.  The rhetoric on SW was a hoot to listen too?
     a.  "The american government preys on it's people like insects" sort of banter...
     b.  Vlad Posner of Radio Moscow?
     c.  Pretty much anything out of Radio Peking.
5.  A simple antenna would work, you did not need a multiband antenna, you just put up a long wire.
6.  A simple radio would work?
7.  You were young!
8.  Box 88

I miss those days a lot now...

In Short, YES!!!!..... Roll Eyes Cry Roll Eyes Cry....It's what got me into ham radio in the first place.....
