1  eHam Forums / Elmers / Antennas: Broadcast FM -vs- AM on: March 05, 2007, 03:55:23 PM
a young fellow in (a local store) asked me if an
antenna for  FM will work for AM on a radio...
or do the two bands need seperate antennas...
I told him that, typically, a radio will have a  "ferrite-rod/wire-coil" antenna INSIDE the box for AM
and an extendable  whip-antenna for FM...

then he clarifies...  why do cars only have the one-antenna for both  AM/FM ?

well.. I stammred a bit and told him I may have to consult  'Google' on that one...  Wink
I never recalled an internal antenna inside an auto-radio-box...
and would not expect it to get any good reception, under the dash and so near the  ignition...
my initial thoughts were that  Amp-Mod  -vs-
Frq-Mod would need basic antenna-design
to be "different"...    so.. any help on this one ?

3  eHam Forums / Elmers / Help Me Choose My First Radios on: February 28, 2007, 04:49:36 PM
Hmmm you say  "First Radios"...
I've had a Dual-band HT (IC-32AT) since '91...
a GREAT radio... but there just isn't THAT much
activity (for me) on 440...  there are plenty of
area repeaters (DFW).. but the  2m is still
where I end up talking/listening...

So, I recently decided to crawl into the 21st Century
(or is this the 22nd?)... and have ordered a
Yaesu VX-170.  Nice features, rugged, good Battery-life.

I wouldn't get  TWO  Dual-Band radios (HT & Mobile)
to start...  I'd get used-to operating habits and
how the radio is used...   then, again, you may
already know what activity you will use...

good luck.

  http://www.Thiecom.de/     (a German site)

I hope you find some manuals you need,
I found four  ICOM manuals I was seeking.

6  eHam Forums / Elmers / Picture Wire on: March 16, 2006, 06:32:07 PM
I was browsing in  HarborFreight.com store
the other day and wondered about getting a
spool of  MIG-Welding  0.035" Copper-Coated
steel wire for use on my camping-QRP-diPoles...

any comments or experience with it ??
It was by the pound, not foot, so I don't
know how many feet is on their small spools.
7  eHam Forums / Elmers / looking for "licensed first" info USA on: March 09, 2006, 12:01:01 AM
 http://www.vanityhq.com/

in the Upper-Left of their main-web-page
is a  FORM-box, enter the  CallSign
it has a  'best known'  history...
but the ones I've inquired about seem
to fade out to say...  Pre-1980 (or so)
thus, that may be when their early Digital-data
  started...

be sure to spell my name correctly,
if you're going to send a 'check'.
8  eHam Forums / Elmers / Charging NEW gelcel on: February 27, 2006, 11:17:54 PM
I received a NEW 12V 5AH Sealed-Lead-Acid-Battery
and went to HarborFreight and got a charger (#93258/below) that
someone here mentioned worked well.
(it was on sale last week for $10, too)

How long should it take to charge a NEW battery ?
Mine has been connected/charging for 24+ hours
and the  CHARGE-LED is still burning.

Also, the unit HUMS.  Its  a little larger than a Kitchen-Match-Box
and is expectly warm-to-touch, but not HOT.

thanks.
9  eHam Forums / Elmers / Help with License Proof on: February 22, 2006, 11:04:34 AM

Hmmm. excuse me.  Kindly direct me to the "docs"
as to how this works...  I got my  Novice/5wpm
"ticket" back in the spring of '86
and soon upgraded to Technician.  I do not recall
if I took my  "General exam" or not, but I never
got the 13wpm test...  Is that how I got "Tech+" ?

Does this mean that "older elements" can now
qualify as a 'General' ??  where can I read-up?
(another  Tech+ buddy of mine and I were planning
to study-up for an upgrade...) now, I'm not
 sure what I have...
Does the "converted.. 97.21a3" still give me
the  Novice/HF/CW(ssb) privalege ??
Sorry for my "ignernce".  Where do I go from here?

( post my address(es) here.  I know its easily
( looked up... )
10  eHam Forums / Elmers / Help with License Proof on: February 21, 2006, 11:54:19 PM
the 'lookup' shows you to be valid until
Jan-2007.   I, too, have a  Tech-Plus from
'86 and just a month ago began my renewal.

 http://wireless.fcc.gov/uls/
you need to  "register/signup" and be
assigned a  FRN# by the ULS
(it 'requires' your SS#, Online or On paper)
 and once you have it,
 you can  "associate"  any/all licenses
that you have or have (commercial) responsibility
...  Then within 90-days of expiration,
you can  login and  request/update your profile
 and be  ReNewed.
I spent more time fretting about it than
it took to do it.  had the paper from FCC
 in about 2+ weeks.
 Their system knew I was a  Tech-Plus
 and my upgraded license has
  "License Class Converted per 97.21a3"

which documents your 5wpm AND Novice+Tech
 license... pre-realignment.
The FCC online system will let you print
a  "License copy", for documentation purposes.
 good luck

13  eHam Forums / CW / Pwr for TenTec 1340 on: February 11, 2006, 03:55:18 PM
I read the nice set of Reviews of the TenTec 13xx
QRP tranceivers.  Thanks for all the contributions.
I have the kit 'On Order'.  Now, to plan my Pwr.
I intend to operate during some (SUV) trips and
camping trips this year.  I'm considering the
PowerSonic 1222 (12v 2.5AH) or 1250 (12v 5AH)

The 1340 draws 30mA:rx and 700mA:tx
I suspect the 2.5AH is adequate... ??
I'd like the 5AH to have extra current
for other equip (I have the TT-1253 Gen-rcvr, too)
(I've yet to decide on Keyer, Tuner...)
Both batteries are the same price (~$17 at Mouser)

What is the "opinion" of PowerSonic Sealed-Pb ??
I plan to get the AAengr 'QRP Smart Charger'.

tnx for your feedback and assistance
for above equipment.  KA5ZCB in FtW.TX
