eHam Forums / Elmers / TO: Gary WG7X regarding my transmitting problem

Thanks WG7X - I intend to take your advice and get the 1/2 waveHF ant. I've used this radioon my boat and before I sold my plane it was fine in the air. The 23' antenna is grounded to an 8' pole in the ground---an abandoned TV Cable gnd; also the radio-tuner are grounded to an 8' copper plated rod outside the window. Trouble began when I disconected my MFJ 1275 interface and the radio from my computer. Nevertheless, I plan to keep my present set-up together with a 1/2 wave ant. for home use and get the ICOM M802 for my boat. Mucho gracias, WA4PEM/WAI5803 (marine)

Here's the answers needed: My antenna is a vertical whip, 23' comonly used for long range trans. on my boat; it is on the highest gabel of my house. The SWR is flat--as near as I can tell; this is how I tune: Choose a band (freq) on my radio; set tuner to TUNE; set to SWR; set radio to CW; key mic or press key button on radio; tunner is ON; sometime a light comes on, sometimes not. I then go to USB; leave tunner on; set to 200 watts; call CQ. I've used 17M, 20M, 8.000+Mhz marine. In the past I've had no trouble talking to boats, NY ground control, and hams. I have been on early evening and late while other hams are communicating. Thanks, Capt hj WA4PEM

It seems that my unit is putting out power---the needles on the tuner and radio are kicking, but I get no CQ responses. Can anyone recommend a good watt meter? Thanks, the Capt. WA4PEM

eHam Forums / Elmers / Question on operating KW250AT tuner
|
on: May 03, 2006, 02:09:49 PM

My Kenwod AT250 comes with complete set-up instructions, I don't think I'm using it correctly. I have a KW TS140S transeiver; the needle kicks a little on the radio, on the tuner much more, but I've made no contacts. Also it is supposed to be "automatic," but setting it to auto seems to be inefective. For awhile when I keyed the mic, the tuner would make a winding sort of noise---as tho tuning; it does'nt do that now. Any help or opinions? Thanks, hj WA4PEM

I've been looking over study materials for EXtra cl. (I've been General since 1974); is there more code? BTW: I have a USCG issued Capt. License--100 mi ocean; 100 Gr Tons; In taking the test for extra, would there be any real advantage in getting the USCG GMDSS, GROL, or MROP Lic? I already have a ship's radio lic. Thanks, WA4PEM HJ

eHam Forums / Elmers / Need help 2M antenna

This mobile antenna is 18" with a magnet for top mount; brand name - unknown and not available---purchased at Ham Fest. It will not transmit NOR receive; I connected my "good" antenna to the Kenwood handheld and got excellent results. I must have bought a dud antenna. All connectors check good. Thanks guys---I suppose I'll just trash it. Capt. HJ WA4PEM
