CW only?
I would hope for CW and SSB operations. Couldn't we expect Kim Jong Un to be a high speed (over 30 WPM) with just a little training and practice? I meant high speed CW operator. And if he was, would he be able to do over 30 WPM with a straight key?

Kim Jong Un's father, Kim Yong Il reportedly was an excellent golfer, scoring 11 holes-in-one "after picking up a golf club that day for the very first time in his life." (Source: http://www.cybergolf.com/golf_news/alltime_golf_scoring_record_goes_with_death_of_kim_jong_il) Here's my idea to get P5 activity. Let's have someone provide ham training and conduct a VE exam session for Kim Jong Un so he can get his ham ticket. And then with that license, encourage him to get on the air and qualify for the DXCC Honor Roll on the first day of his ham operations (or by the second day if sunspot activity is down). With that accomplishment, he might be so excited about his DX'ing that he would be willing to organize and fund a DXpedition in North Korea as an avid DX'er. Hey, it's just an idea. I'll let others work out the details to implement it.

As long as you make a valid two-way radio contact with a DX station, what difference does it make how you found the station? If you don't like using nets or making schedules for DX contacts, don't do it.

eHam Forums / DXing / DXCC and deleted countries

I've never applied for DXCC, although I've worked and confirmed about 300 countries (including deleted ones). I plan to submit my DXCC application when I have 300 current countries confirmed. My question: in my initial application for DXCC am I able to submit deleted country QSLs for credit? (I do understand that deleted country QSLs don't count for the DXCC Honor Roll.)

Needless to say, I was VERY excited! I have a rather modest setup: A K3 driving an ALS600 and a Hex beam at only 32 feet. I have been looking for S21 for many years, and never heard any of the previous operations. I keep a photo album of all the unique entities, and hopefully S21XV will be in there. The ONLY country I've worked and not received a QSL from was LU3ZY, Anibal, on South Sandwich Islands from way back in the late 70's. I've tried, but no hope on that one. Guess if I count that one, the number is 351, but because I think it's a lost cause, I usually leave it out. The only one left that has action right now is the JD1 on Minami Torishima. Heard him once, but no luck. Maybe? Work them first, and worry about DXCC status later. Should count, but guess you can never tell. Glad to put this one aside in any case. It sure took a major effort on this old DX'ers part. Been chasing them since 1963...

Jim: Hang in there. I recently worked a /JD1 for my first Minami Torishima QSO and today worked S21XV for an ATNO. So my recent DX'ing effort has been productive. For other ATNO's, I've been hunting XU7ACQ and will be in the hunt for ZL7LC who plans to be active soon via PSK-31. For most of my recent and current DX'ing I run about 600-700 watts into a K4KIO hexagonal beam with the top element (for 20 meters) only up about 25 feet. I think my signal is helped by my QTH; I live on a small barrier island about 2 miles from the Gulf of Mexico. By the way, I got my first ticket (novice) in 1962. I've worked about 290 current countries and a few deleted countries. One of the deleted countries is KZ5-land, which reflects my advanced age. :-) 73, Chuck

Jonathan: I contacted S21VX this morning on 17 meters CW for an ATNO. He had a good signal into NW Florida and is a very good CW operator. I appreciate his effort in looking for NA. By the way, I'm still need a Vatican QSO. :-)

Wouldn't it be great to have a special events station operate in the Vatican to celebrate the election of a new pope? Just saying. :-)
