1  eHam Forums / Elmers / TS-950SD keys TL-922A on: August 10, 2004, 04:26:42 PM
Thanks guys,

The cable rings out OK. There is a "Linear Amp" On/Off switch on the back of the rig. With it in the off position the TL-922 does not key when switched to operate: with it on, it does. I'll have to try to read the scematic and see what this controls and where the linear on relay is.

I guess I should be grateful for a new "challenge".

Hi all,

Recently I began to have trouble with my TL-922A acting as if it is being keyed by my TS-950SD whenever I switch the linear to operate. With neither the CW key or the mike keyed, as soon as I turn the Linear switch on the TL-922A to operate, the "On Air" light comes on and the the IP jumps up to .12 amps. The SWR/Power Meter shows no power out. The audio level on the TS-950 drops as well. It is acting as if the T/R relay in the TS-950 is stuck. I can unplug the relay wire between the 2 units and this does not happen. Of course, the linear doesn't key up either.

What do you think guys, bad relay? Anyone ever run accross this problem?

Tnx,

Harry, W6OFG
3  eHam Forums / Elmers / TS-950S Digital? on: April 20, 2004, 01:18:49 PM
Thanks Terry,

The xcvr does have the digital underpack so I guess it is the SD model. What was confusing me was that while the label model number says TS-950S, it is labeled on top as "TS-950S Digital". I suppose that's the way they came from the factory. But, what do I know? I'm old and easily confused.

Tnx es 73, Harry

I would be surprised if the TS-930S is not closing pin 7 on the Remote socket when you go into xmit. You need to get a 7 pin plug available from AES and wire it for the linear. The operating contacts are, as you mentioned, 7 & 2. I bought a premade 6' cable at Radio Shack and cut it in half (you'll need both halves). Solder the inner wire to pin 7 and the outer shield to pin 2 (ground). This will turn the linear on and off with the xmit of the TS-930S. You will also need the ALC from the TS-930S to the linear, so solder the inner wire to pin 6 and the shield to pin 2 using the other half of the cable. Note which plug is wired to which pin. Put it all together, insert the plug into the remote socket of the TS-930S, plug the jack ends into the the relay (pin 7 wire) and ALC (pin 6 wire)jacks on the linear and, bingo, you're ready to melt some clouds.

OK guys (and gals), here's a stupid question. I just bought a TS-950S Digital as an upgrade from a TS-930S. I really like the radio. What I would like to know, is the TS-950S Digital the same as a TS-950SD? If not, what are the differences?

I would have liked to have bought the TS-950SDX but I can't afford another ex-XYL!

Tnx,

6  eHam Forums / Elmers / Satellite TV RFI on: September 27, 2002, 05:01:58 PM
Follow-up.

My antenna is an MFJ-1798 located ~ 30' from the neighbors Direct TV dish. I am using RG-213. I do have spurrious RF (either from coax or in the AC line) in the shack which turns my touch lamp on and off. No chokes in the power cords at present. Ground is hard line #10 aluminum through the wall into a 6' sunk grounding rod and coupled to a faucet outlet. I'll try connecting the TL-922A directly to the antenna skipping all the tuners, bridges, meters and what-have-you and will ferrite choke my lines first. If this fails, I'll install a standard TVI filter between his tuner and TV. If that fails, I'll ferrite the neighbor to death.

I had forgotten that there is a low-amp voltage on the line between the satellite tuner and the dish. Oh well, ain't gettin' old grand!

Again tnx to all & 73,

Harry

Thanks for all the help. It looks like I've got several things that I can work with. I wonder how I can invest in a "ferrite" mine.

tnx,

Harry

I'm having trouble staying out of my neighbor's satellite tv. When operating a TS-930 on 20 meters barefoot there is no problem. When I kick in a linear the increased power overdrives his system and both video and audio are disrupted. I had this problem using either an Ameritron AL572 and a Kenwood TL-922A. I have a low pass on my equipment and clean signal reports. I would like to install a high-pass filter on his equipment if I can find one with a frequency pass range that will accommodate satellite tv. Satellite transmits on 950 & 1450 mhz and the filters I have found so far pass from 50 to 900 mhz or less. Is anyone aware of a high-pass that passes 900 mhz and up?

Hi again George,

The rectangular chokes are the ones that worked for me. They are made of a plastic holder that clips together on one corner. The ferrite is actually 2 "U" shaped pieces that fit together to form the rectangle. You will want to to open the clip and coil the power cable through the ferrites and then snap it back together. These things stack so you can add them as needed. For my problem, I started with 2 and added chokes until the problem was solved with 6 stacked together. The final product had one loop of the power cord with the one side of the chokes inside the loop. It sounds like your problem isn't that great and you may get away with fewer chokes. In any case it's a lot cheaper than running new CAT5. I had forgotten that the chokes were around $8.00 but that is the right price. (What the hell, I'm old!)

Good luck,

Harry W6OFG

Hi George,

Your question is the answer to what I was asking about wireless networks and RFI. I kind of thought that there might be a problem. As to your RFI problem now. A few months back, I was running an Ameritron AL572 and had all sorts of problems. It was setting off my carbon monoxide detector on 20 meters and my burglar alarm on 15 meters. I put six ferrite chokes (the wrap around kind not the clip on) on the power cord for the linear and it pretty well took care of the problem. You might want to give it a try. The ferrites are available from Radio Shack and cost about $4.00 a pair.

good luck,

Harry, W6OFG
13  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / RFI and the Wireless LAN on: August 08, 2002, 02:32:23 PM
This is just a shot in the dark. I am thinking of installing a wireless LAN in my home rather than run CAT 5 wiring (I'm getting too old to crawl around in the roof). I'm also running a Kenwood TL-922A linear. I don't have much of a RFI problem (an earlier amp, AL572, set off my burglar alarm and CO detector) but it does turn my touch lamps on and off as I transmit. Has anyone used a wireless newtwork around a linear? And, If so, what kind of problems did you run into.

Tnx,

Harry
14  eHam Forums / Elmers / TS-930S Xmit tuning on: May 31, 2002, 06:23:49 PM
I just bought a Kenwood TS-930S and the fellow forgot to send the manual with it. I'm an old tube guy (I'm still not convinced that transistors aren't evil) and am lost if I can't "dip" the finals. Can anyone tell me how to tune this thing to transmit or will I just have to wait on the manual to get here?

Tnx, Harry
15  eHam Forums / Elmers / Kenwood HC-10 clock wired for 220v on: April 19, 2002, 04:24:17 PM
I recently bought a Kenwood HC-10 from overseas and it has a label on the bottom that says it is for 220VAC. Does anyone know of a modification to convert it to 120VAC?
