Hello fellow mobile "Hamsters",

I`m back on the bands after a break of seven years. I`ve unpacked the TS 430 and the Hustler antenna, made a bracket for the back of the Rover 600 SLDI, now all I need are some sunspots and a warm car!

I have resonators for 10, 15, 20, 40, and 80 metres, I never purchased resonators for 12 and 17 metres but I experimented with longer whips and now have access to these bands. The Hustler has always been a good antenna and I have excellent SWR`s, flat on all bands with the exception of 40 and 80.

Those with a Hustler installation might like to try using longer whips on some resonators which will give a little extra gain and a wider bandwidth.
Try the following:

12 metres on a 10 metre resonator, whip length 295 mm
15 metres on a 10 metre resonator, whip length 577 mm
17 metres on a 10 metre resonator, whip length 918 mm
17 metres on a 15 metre resonator, whip length 437 mm
20 metres on a 15 metre resonator, whip length 942 mm

If anyone has experimented using a 20 metre resonator with a longer whip and made it resonant on 40 metres I would be pleased to know the length of the whip.

633  eHam Forums / Elmers / How do you turn DOWN the power on a Kenwood TS440? on: March 24, 2001, 04:52:08 PM
Dear OM,  Ref turning down RF power

You will need a 9 V battery, a battery connector, an ON/OFF switch, a 100 K LIN adjustable pot, a 100 K resistor and two feet of co-ax, and a small plastic box

The centre of the pot is connected to the centre wire of the co-ax via a 100 K resistor. From the underside, the left connection of the pot is connected to the negative side of the 9V battery. The right connection of the pot is connected to the braid of the co-ax with a short wire to the ON/OFF switch, then a short wire from the switch to the positive side of the 9V battery

On the other end of the co-ax, solder a 7 pin DIN plug
and connect pin 7 to the centre wire of the co-ax, and the braid to the earth of the DIN plug.

Fix the pot into a plastic box and the DIN plug into the REMOTE socket on the rear of the rig.

You will now be able to control the RF output by adjustments on the potentiometer to any low power you may require.

This is ideal for PSK to ensure the correct ALC setting with no discernable movement of the ALC needle.

Dear AG4DG,

Reference your enquiry about a cable. You need to purchase an 8 pin microphone plug and wire it as follows

                 Pin 1   white to Mic
Pin 2   red to PTT standby
Pin 7 & 8 are soldered                 together with the braid

If you wish to have more details send me an e mail with your e-mail address
