There are several factors to consider. If used can you repair it? Availability and reliability of tubes or semiconductors and replacement cost. WARC bands can be used with it or do you care about that? Does it have a tuned input? Do you need one? Budget is of course a concern. Do you have a 240V outlet you can use or get one wired for higher power amps? Or would you rather have a lower power amp that runs ok on 120Vac? Do you want QSK?
One big question is do you have good antennas already? They are always a more worthwhile investment. You can't work what you can't hear.
The Ameritron AL-80B is usually considered the best bang for buck amp out there. I have had a Clipperton L, a Henry 2KD4, an AL-1200 I never even fired up in about 4 years and sold, and an AL-811 that I regularly use for several years now. I got them all used from the same person a friend of mine...good salesman I guess!! IF I were to buy another amp, it would be an AL-80B.

Sounds strange to me since you know the world is listening. Not really. I guess you haven't spent too much time on 75 phone!!

I had a CMOS 4 for several years but sold it as I just didn't use it very much. It was a very good keyer though, I liked it and would buy another one if needed.

Magnets lose there force with aging, so just a temporary hype.
I have been using a Hamco Carson EK-1 key with magnetic tension since 1972. It's only temporary though! IF I were to buy a higher end key at new key prices, I would only buy a magnetic key. Used at the right price, I might not care as much one way or the other.

Doesn't matter a whole lot to me in which I use and I have both. A magnetic tension key has a lighter touch. A key either has a good feel to it or it doesn't. Everybody likes something different.
Some musical instruments, pool cues (as well as keys) etc are poorly and/or cheaply constructed. They are of little use to anyone other than as a toy and will often alienate people from learning to play or use it.

From the ARRL regarding signing an Eqsl "card"; Also, we expect to be able to identify cards as authentic. Many cards are printed on home printers, and, in many cases, the data is printed on card stock at the same time. Although this is technically acceptable, the process often makes verification difficult. In certain cases we may reject these cards. Cards should be personalized or otherwise made unique through the use of a stamp or other personal mark (signature or initials) across a label boundary. You are probably not going to work anything so rare that your only option would be to use even a signed Eqsl card, or even close to rare for that matter. Garden variety DX is pretty easy to work with even meager antennas. Just work a couple more of whatever entity it was and be patient for an LOTW confirmation or a real card. It's the journey, not the destination.

Do you really need a 70 amp power supply? You won't be moving it around a lot!
Yeah, but deadlifting one is a good way to save on a gym membership. Or spend more for a physical therapist!!

I miss C. Fritz of Scottsdale Arizona. He used to print the best looking QSL cards out there. Expensive though.

I have been using an Astron RS-20M for over 15 years now with no problems. The light in the switch even still works. It is under the desk. I turn it on and off with my foot. The meters are not all that worthwhile. I have hardly ever looked at them.

We'd most often learn our new callsigns from the Little Print Shop mailing! Their QSL samples would show up a week or more before your license did...SHEER TORTURE!!

eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Which is soil / rock better to have at your QTH?
|

best is any type of soil that you can dig a hole in. If you can go down 3 feet you can put in a base wirh a 3' X 3' X 3' hole with some rebar for your 50 foot tall rohn 25 tower, and a bigger hole makes a bigger tower. you can always put radials out for a vert, and up enough makes it a non problem.
I like this answer the best! If you want some good performance, a tower is what you should be thinking about. Can you dig it??

eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: HF Vertical: Ground Mounted or Elevated. Will it matter with this antenna?
|
on: June 30, 2012, 07:42:38 AM
|
|
Elevated a couple feet or a few feet performance wise it probably won't matter much. If you can get it up high like rooftop height, 20ft up or more, it will have much better performance especially on 20 meters and higher frequencies if set up properly. Just no way around that. When I moved a Hustler 4BTV from the ground to a rooftop it was like night and day. Any antenna is better than no antenna however.
Play with it both ways if you can. It would be a good experience and you will learn a few things along the way.
