46  eHam Forums / Elmers / 10 Meter beacon on: February 06, 2008, 06:27:17 PM
Hey Gang,

I'm thinking of putting up a 10 meter beacon. The technical side I have already figured out. What I need to know is do I have to request a frequency allocation? If so from who? FCC? ARRL? I don't want to step on any toes and I did look on one website that lists 10 meter beacons. I found that there is no beacon on 28.240 that is 1000 miles from my QTH, so I think that this frequency would be good for me to use. Who do I contact? I'm ready to start transmitting.

From a ham who is totally microsoft windoze free.
Everything I do ham related from logging to programming radios, I do under Linux.  Just remember what all the operating systems were created for:

MAC OS for Desktop Publishing & Creativity
Linux for development
Plam OS for portability
Windoze for Solitaire

And Yes I am intentionally misspelling windoze!

48  eHam Forums / Elmers / 6 meter amp on: October 03, 2007, 08:43:14 AM
Hey Gang,

I am looking for plans or any kits that are available for a 6 meter amp. I am looking for 500-1KW for 6M SSB mainly. Solid state or tube is fine. I checked communication concepts ant their 600 watt amp will only go to 50MHz. I'm sure I could possibly modify it to cover up to 53MHz or it may just do that on it's own, but I didn't want to mess with it too much.

Thanks

Did they still hold this? This is mainly an outdoor hamfest and it rained buckets all day Sunday. If one person showed up it was to much.
50  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / palomar 200/with preamp on: April 05, 2007, 08:02:33 PM
I'd be willing to bet it doesn't have an FCC Type acceptance label on it. If it doesn't, I wouldn't be advertising that I had one in my shack, much less using it.  It is an illegal amp that is nothing more that a splatter box. Throw it away before you get caught with it.
51  eHam Forums / Elmers / Anyone remember how to operate Santec ST-142? on: February 18, 2007, 06:28:47 PM
I have one here and still use it. It was my 1st HT back in 1984. If you are going to change frequency for example to enter 146.520MHz just enter "6520" and then press the "SET" key. This is how you enter the frequency.

Good luck and enjoy. I found that a 9.6V RC pack that was  discontinued by radio shack for abut 8 bucks works perfectly.

52  eHam Forums / Elmers / Icom IC-910 Power Issue on: January 02, 2007, 07:22:06 PM
As mentioned I have an externally connected bird watt meter. Also the meter on the radio shows reduced power output.
53  eHam Forums / Elmers / Icom IC-910 Power Issue on: January 02, 2007, 06:54:33 PM
I find it hard to believe that both of us with 2 of the same make & model of radio and new feed line on both ends and also have tried different antennas. The problem still persists.
54  eHam Forums / Elmers / Icom IC-910 Power Issue on: January 02, 2007, 05:31:45 PM
Hi Gang,

Both me and a fellow ham own the IC-910 VHF/UHF all mode base rig and we both have the same issue. This radio like many new radios have a circuit that sense that the SWR might be high and back off on the output power to prevent  the finals from being fried. All this being said, I know that this particular radio has had some issues with this "feature" where it will back off on power for no reason. Both me and my friend are seeing this on our radios. I heard that there is a fix or mod to correct this. This problem happens on both bands but is worse on UHF. At times is will cut the power to less than half of the rated full output.

Oh! Don't respond if you are going to tell me that it is a high SWR on my antenna. I have tried both a diamond SWR meter and also checked the reflected power with a bird meter that has been calibrated by a top military contractor's antenna & cal lab and IT IS NOT A HIGH SWR ON MY ANTENNA! The SWR on my antenna is 1.1:1

Thank you

55  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / Ramsey Amplifier Kits on: December 01, 2006, 10:11:15 AM
Do your home homework. The ramsey kits have gotten a real bad reputation. Check out the reviews here on eham. I highly recommend the HFPacker Amp by Virgil Stamps K5OOR I build the complete kit for 10-160 meters I think it will handle 1-5 watts input with about 35-40 watts output. Also the kit is only about  $129.00. It is a really detailed kit and fun to build. go here:

Good luck

I have a 5BTV and even with the 12 & 17 Meter mods it blew away the GAP piece of crap antenna that I had that would never tune. The 5BTV went together perfectly and with just rough eyeballing I got an excellent SWR on every band. The best bang for the buck.

Brad & I were hamfest buddies and he's the one that got me started in ham radio back in high school. I lost contact with him back in the late 80's I have found that he lives in VA like me, but when I call or try and message him I get no response.

Yes this is a IC-RP1210 REPEATER.I have tried looking at the programming with Hex Workshop & I can't make heads or tails of it. I tried looking for both CW characters & also the letters or characters that would repersent the letters of the call sign that is in it right now with no luck Here is what it looks like in HEX: I did a cut & paste from notepad for this

59  eHam Forums / Elmers / Icom IC-1210, 1200MHz Repeater on: June 15, 2006, 10:30:27 AM
Hi Gang,

We recently acquired an IC-RP1210 repeater that we would like to put on line but we need to change the EPROM programming so the repeater ID's with one of our call signs. I was able to bring the EPROM to work and we were able to read the program on it, but it is all in HEX. All I need to do is change the existing call sign on this one to one of our call signs. I called Icom several times for assistance, but they will not return my call. Does anybody out there know how I can do this?

Thanx in advance

60  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / HUSTLER 4BTV vs. HY-GAIN 14AVQ on: May 14, 2006, 08:51:11 AM
Hygain, Ameritron, Vectronics. Look at where they are made. Starkville, MS. To me this is a foul 3 letter word, MFJ, which in any language translates to garbage. STAY AWAY!!!!

I tell you this from a proud & very happy owner of a 5BTV and more importantly an MFJ free shack.

Oh yea and if you like I can make a copy of one of the pages of my log book where NONE of the calls that were logged were stateside calls. I'd say that DX is good. I can also tell you that the 5BTV is installed in not the best place for an antenna installation, but hey it works. Oh yea I also did the 17&12 meter mods for this antenna and these bands also works very very well.

Good luck
