Hello, Thank you for taking the time to read this message. About 5 years or more ago I remember there was an experiment which involved putting a purchased "Peripheral Card" in your computer and you could then use your computer similar to a ham radio. It is not the program Echo-Link.. It is an actual card you would place inside the computer, I think it was in that vacinity of around $150.00. Does anyone know what this was called? Or have a link to the information ? Any information will be appreciated. Thank you.

eHam Forums / Amplifiers / TE Systems 1412G connections via Diamond SX-400

Hello, Thank you for taking the time to read this message. I have a TE Systems 1412G 2 Mtr. amplifier I am trying to connect through a Diamond SX-400 SWR/PWR meter. On the back of the TE Systems 1412G there are two SO239's (RF Output "ANTENNA") (RF Input "XCVR"). . On the back of the Diamond SX-400 there are two SO239's (ANT) (RX) . I am confused looking at the block diagram in the TE Systems 1412G manual. . Could one of you PRO's tell me what coax goes where ? I have tried numerous coax connection configurations. Either I have a bad amp or I have incorrect coax connections. I am getting a little nervous with trial and error ... I do not want to toast up the rig. Any information or advice will be appreciated. 73's and Good Health. W1TFM

Hi Tom, The Alpha Delta DXEE will work very well for you. It is a short antenna and will fit your area. I fiddled around with attic antenna's at my QTH for several months now and they work well. With the help and suggestions from the fine group of hams here at Eham I am back on the air again. If you have the oportunity to run a "Stealth" wire I would suggest using one of the SGC SmartTuners, they work very well... 73's W1TFM

Hello, Thank you for taking the time to read this message. I live in a new condominium and antenna restrictions are imposed on me within my CC&R's. Over the past several months I have been experimenting with attic antenna's. I planned for over a month to put up a "Stealth" antenna. Finally a few days ago I put up the "Stealth" wire and said the heck with the CC&R's - My question is ... If I get caught with the "Stealth" by a noisy neighbor, what legal issues would I face ? Any information or advice will be appreciated. 73's and Good Health. W1TFM

eHam Forums / RFI / EMI / RFI from new antenna set-up

Hello, Thank you for taking the time to read this post. I live in a condominium with antenna restrictions. What I have done to combat this restriction is the following: I purchase a "Buddipole" antenna and put it in the attic. I set it up for 40 meters and had a short QSO with another station. During this QSO I caused no RFI at all. The S.W.R. was great and I was running 200 watts from a Yeasu FT1000MP MKV. I wanted to get an antenna outside so I purchased the SGC-230 SmartTuner antenna coupler. I have the SGC-230 mounted inside up high very close to the side of the house to keep it out of view. From the SGC-230 I am running an "End Fed" wire (14 AWG plastic coated black ). The wire runs up the side of my condo and just below the gutter. From the point below the gutter I put a small hold-down and ran the wire around the gutter up to a vent pipe on the roof. I put a small pulley on the vent pipe and then ran the wire over to a tree about 60 feet away. When I transmit on the "End Fed" wire I cause problems within my house.. the touch lamps go off and on. The cable T.V. is effected. I can not understand why the "Buddipole" would not have the same effect. I have no Low-Pass filter in line - (Still looking for it) and I have yet to ground my rig. I am wondering if the wire going around the gutter would be the problem. The wire is coated with plastic.. and I thought it would be fine because it is not bare metal on metal. The gutter is alumimum. Could it be the lack of a Low-Pass filter... or lack of grounding the rig ? I am confused because the "Buddipole" inside the attic did not raise this type of havoc. Any information or advice will be greatly appreciated. 73's and Good Health W1TFM

eHam Forums / Elmers / SGC-230 SmartTuner "End Feed" Question
|
on: January 17, 2004, 04:14:41 PM

Hello, Thank you for taking the time to read this post. I am looking for information on the SGC-230 SmartTuner. I live in a antenna restricted area so I am going to run "Stealth" wire "14 AWG copper stranded" in an inverted "L". The total wire length will be about 85 feet long. From the SGC-230 the wire will go up 23 feet to a high impact plastic gutter, around the gutter and up to a PVC vent pipe on the roof. From the vent pipe through a small pulley and over to a tree 55 feet from the vent pipe on the roof). Originally my thought was to feed the wire up the side of the house to the gutter in a straight line. My guestion is... If I mount the SGC-230 inside my HVC room and feed the "End Fed" 14 AWG wire through a small hole in a piece of pine frame and then up to the gutter...to the vent pipe... to the tree ... will I be making too many bends and creating a headache. I would like to keep the SGC-230 inside and hidden if I could. Any information and advice will be appreciated. 73's and Good Health. W1TFM

Hello, Thank you for taking the time to read this post. I need a little advice from the "Pro's" here at Eham. I am tossing the thought around between the Yeasu FT-1000 MKV or the Kenwood 870S. I have read all the product reviews here at Eham on the Kenwood 870S and the FT-1000 MKV. I have an oportunity to purchase a "used" Kenwood 870S. I will be purchasing the FT-1000 MKV "New" All I need now is some help on my decision. If you were me what would you do ? Mark V or 870S ? All information will be appreciated. Thank you. 73's and Good Health W1TFM

Hello, Thank you for taking the time to read this post. I have a Yeasu FT-900 with 100+ watts (PEP). I am thinking of connecting an Icom IC-2KL 500 watt amplifier to it. Could one of you "Pro's" fill me in on if I can make the connection between the two ? FT-900 - ICOM IC-2KL. 73's and Good Health W1TFM

eHam Forums / Elmers / How's the new Kenwood TS480SAT?
|

Hi Rob, From what I see in the "Product Reviews here at Eham.com the 480SAT is getting excellent reviews. Check them out at this link: http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/3325The price is pretty reasonable too, they have a 100 watt (TS-480SAT) for $1369.00. and the 200 watt model (TS-480HX) for $1500.00. Both rigs TX (1.8 - 50 MHz.) For $130.00 additonal for the 100 additonal watts I think it is a pretty good price. 73's W1TFM

Hi Mike, The reply Steve KC8AXJ gave you is good advice. I been fiddling with ham radio's since 1993. I had a 2 mtr. 440 rig and I did not use the 440 side much at all. There was a frequency on 440 that had tremendous coverage here in Massachusetts but I think that is long gone now. You will find that 2 Mtrs. will serve you well. You will not be missing much on 440 unless you have a 440 repeater near your location that is networked. Some repeaters are linked into 6 Mtr. HF stations, 10 Mtr. stations, etc. etc. I would check it out before you spend the money to have 440 capabilities. Usually 2 Mtr. 440 rigs are for satellite work. They have a 2 mtr. (Uplink) that you transmitt to the satellite on and you listen on the 440 side (Downlink). I think some satellites do the reverse 440 (Uplink) 2 Mtr. (Downlink) Welcome to ham radio. Have a great time. 73's W1TFM

Hi Matt, The Diamond Super Gainer 7900 dual band antenna I think is the greatest. The diamond 400 series trunk mount is exactly what you are looking for. It fits on the trunk lip, has rubber protectors and has a very thin but effective lead that runs into your trunk. From where the thin coax supplied with the 400 series Diamond Trunk Mount you may have to purchase an extention cable to allow you to run the coax up to your rig. If you purchase the Diamond SG-7900 you will absolutely not regret your purchase. You "Can" purchase another non 400 series mount... that is up to you, there you may save a few dollars. The SG-7900 is a little on the tall side but I tell ya, you will be amazed with it's performance. 73's and Good Health W1TFM

Additional information to my post: Just below the ground where I will be tying off my antenna wire there is a chain link fence. It is about 5 feet high and over 100 feet long. It is about 35 feet away from my house. Would this help in any type of counterpoise ? Thank you. W1TFM
