1  eHam Forums / Digital / Digi modes on Yaesu 857D on: December 24, 2006, 02:29:09 PM
Are all the digi modes on the Yaesu 857D operated from the same set of leads or do I need two sets to operate CAT and PSK/RTTY/Digi?

Like many others I cannot find much useful info on using digi modes. I have only looked at the standard PTT modes but am thinking about digi

I've heard a fair amount about bonding an antenna to the cars body, can you explain how this is done please.

I have no problem paying out for a goood antenna, it's just on my side of the pond antennas are more than double in cost than you pay yourside.

Hi all I'm looking for suggestions on a replacement antenna for my Sandpiper ATX DHP multiband.

I can't stretch to the High Sierra style antenna plus my Volvo isnt' big enough (there's something to big for a Volvo)also my pocket isn't deep enough to stretch to £399 just the antenna alone no controller.  I'm being told various reports from the Yaesu ATAS 120A also it's £255. Am considering the MFJ 80-6 Screwdriver antenna as it's £159.  I'm also thinking about individual antennas, although changing them will be a small problem.

Does anyone have any suggestions on which is the best style ?

Oh on another matter can an admin change my login details to my new Intermediate callsign please of

2E0BSS.

Thanks

Thanks I was sure foundation (M3's) were getting 10GHz. Still haven't found a radio unit to go that high maybe you can suggest where I can start looking.

6  eHam Forums / HomeBrew / Yet another Slinky Dipole Question on: November 15, 2006, 11:54:42 AM
Hi I'm in the process of building a slinky Di-pole, as I cannot errect an external antenna. I know it's going to be technically a half wave antenna so each side needs to be roughly quarter of the original band ie for 20m each side needs to be roughly 5m(no idea what that is in feet) my main question is as i'm going to be using two slinky's does anyone know of a calculation to work out the length of a spring needed or can anyone tell me roughly how to work it out? I have a basic idea of around 1/3 the original band would be sufficent? (taking in consideration the spring coils)  I could be completely wrong so let me know please

7  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / MFJ Screwdriver Antenna MFJ-1668, MFJ-1664 on: November 10, 2006, 03:09:14 PM
Hi has anyone got experience of the above antenna? I'm assuming they're the same unit just with different whips.

I'm considering purchasing one as my DHP ATX is a junk pile also the fly lead is annoying

9  eHam Forums / Antenna Restrictions / Two options for an antenna on: November 09, 2006, 04:30:48 PM
This is more or less following on from my post regarding my earlier post.

I have two options to build an antenna outside

1: get a cheap collapsible fishing pole that extends to around 15m wind copper wire around it and run this to an ATU bringing it in in the morning and putting it out in the dark and at weekends.

2: get a length of copper wire and run it horizontally along the wall say two or three lenghts as I cannot run it vertically nor do I have anything to connect it to anything else and earthing it descreatly behind a drain pipe.

On number 1: can anyone let me know if I would need to wind the wire all the way down or just a proportion of the sections.  On number 2: Would horizontally connected on the wall be ok and would multi layers (in an S pattern)do anything or just one length at around 50 feet

Give me your views and points

Hi in the instance it was ignoring me because at first I was acknowledged he repeated my callsign realised it was M3 and started QRZing me.

I'm unsure to how these contests work although on the 18th of November all being well I should become a 2E0 (intermediate)

12  eHam Forums / Antenna Restrictions / Serious antenna restrictions on: November 09, 2006, 06:13:30 AM
I have one of the most major antenna restrictions available.

The problem is I live in an ground floor, local authority, apartment with no garden no balcony.  The local authority won't allow me to put an antenna on the roof of the building so I'm severly restricted on this matter.

I've considered putting a wire horizontally along the wall any advice on this would be great.  If I put a wire antenna along the wall I can get it to around 10 feet off the ground otherwise I'm restricted to an internal vertical antenna.

Would a horizontal antenna surfice?

Thanks

This post is definately about contests and not nets which are fun.  I have never had a problem with the USA, albeit I've only ever dx'd two stations in the USA one in Baltimore one in Kentucky.

I know there are rules in a contest, however, many other M3's I've spoken to agree with me we only get QRZ from italy.

In the UK most of you will be aware that there are some major changes happening to the way we are licensed including giving M3's (Foundation) licensees 10GhZ; My question is why? as an M3 we cannot build anything we have to be careful if we buy second hand equipment so what use will 10GhZ be unless it's for satellite use. Where can I go buy a 10GhZ transmitter from? I'm fairly sure this kind of transmitter would be homebrew thus falling into the be very careful catagory.

Any answers would be appreciated also to where I could obtain such a transmitter
