I've bought several radios from Gigaparts over the years. My one time dealing with customer service was met with a courteous and professional ham who took care of a small problem.
They come highly recommended in my book.

I understand exactly what you mean in this post. Back when I got my Novice license, I was thrilled to just be able to talk to someone across town or across the country using CW. When the Novice/Technician expansion came around, I was thrilled to have SSB priveleges on 10-meters. My upgrade to General class didn't happen for 11 more years.
That's the best part of this hobby in my opinion--the many modes and niches the hobby provides. I've tried all sorts of different communication techniques at my own learning pace. Do what you enjoy for as long as you enjoy it. More power to you!
Oh, as a side note, I finally upgraded to Extra class this past weekend. It only took an additional 17 years. ;-)

eHam Forums / Mods And Repairs / Realistic HTX-100 T/R Turnaround Time

Hi, folks.
I just acquired an HTX-100 a few days ago and have been running it through its paces for checkout. Years ago, I had one on the air but can't recall much about it.
My problem is with the transmit to receive turnaround time. It takes nearly half a second when switching from transmit to recieve and causes me to miss parts of calls. Is this normal? If not, how do I reduce the switching time?
I've searched all over the internet and found nothing so far. I would really like to utilize this rig as my QRP radio for 10m CW but the hangtime is killing me.'
Thanks and 73,

I agree somewhat with AB7E.
During this year's Field Day, I was unhappy with the performance of the vehicle-mounted vertical antenna I had been using for several hours. So, I pulled some speaker wire out of my kit bag along with a cobra head antenna mount. After measuring out a 40m dipole I assembled it and strung it in the trees.
The hams assembled were amazed. The fact that I built an antenna out of 'simple pieces of wire' was unbelievable. The fact that it worked and outperformed the 'store bought' vertical was equally impressive.
I hope I taught some practical antenna building techniques to new hams. Conversely, the lack of knowledge had me a little worried in the event a real disaster might happen in this area.

Most A-1 contest operators will take a 'not in the contest' person and step them through the exchange. It takes a little time but both sides come out happy in the 'exchange'.

In 1984, I used ARRL code tapes, ARRL qualifying runs, sending and receiving with my elmer using a code oscillator.
After receiving my Novice license, over the air QSO's with a local ham became my sustainment training.
