1  eHam Forums / Misc / Calling CQ the right way? on: July 10, 2002, 12:15:22 AM
Well,
I heard it is kinda rude, to interrupt 2 pople in a conversation. this might be the proper way if they use a repeater but when operating simplex... I thought calling CQ is the correct way to call for a contact, when on simplex, or am I mistaken?
And what do you mean, that it is almost illegal to call CQ on FM? why is that? I never heard of that before.
thank you, Kilian
2  eHam Forums / Misc / Calling CQ the right way? on: July 09, 2002, 02:11:52 AM
Hi guys,
this may sound really stupid, but I seriously started to wonder, what my problem is with calling CQ. I spend today and yesterday several hours behind my (newly received but used) TM-733a rig and tried to make contacts. Without any success. As I started to ham, i just had my little vx-1r I communicated with. I knew I couldn't make much of a contact due to the 500mW output. But now i have a mobile rig with 50watts and there is still no one answering my CQs. I thought maybe there are not that many hams hams in my area (southern suburbs of Chicago... Tinley Park to be specific) but I still can listen to them all over the 2meter band. Is there like a trick to call CQ (I actually can't believe i am asking this question)Huh
Thanks for your help,

3  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / Crossband with Kenwood TM-733a on: July 09, 2002, 12:07:28 AM
Hi guys,
is it possible to use the Kenwood TM-733a (dualband mobile) as a crossbandrepeater? If yes, how can I access this mode?
Thank you,

4  eHam Forums / Misc / travelling by plane on: July 01, 2002, 07:50:42 PM
Hi everyone,
i am travelling to Germany in a week, and i just wanted to know, if I can take my HT with me in my luggage, or if this is not allowed. My mobile rig will be in one of my bags in its original package surrounded by cloth, so I think I won't have to worry about it that much.
Thanx,

5  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / right antenna? on: June 29, 2002, 04:12:17 PM
hi guys,
I have a Kenwood tm-733a radio, but i am still missing an antenna. I ordered a mobile one at universal-radio, but they have a supply shortage for the mag. mounts, so they wont send it to me. I thought, maybe i could build an antenna by myself, but I have several problems. First of all, the radio I have has a build in duplexer, so I have a single antenna line for 2m/70cm. What would happen if I just attach a 2m antenna? Could this damage the 440mhz part of the radio or does this not matter? (maybe I could also just go in VV mode as long i just have a 2m antenna) Another problem is, that I don't have an SWR-meter. As I don't really know any other hams nearby, I have to live without. But could a selfmade antenna damage my radio, if it's not properly tuned (i am using formulas, but they are as far as I know just good as a starting point.
Maybe you guys can help me out and maybe tell me, what kind of antenna I could build???
thanks a lot,

7  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / Was it a dipole? on: June 27, 2002, 10:46:50 PM
Hi guys,
I just saw a guy, who had on his car roof (between the two parallel bars on the left and right side of the car) some wire construction, which totally looked to me like a dipole antenna. Besides he had a vertical antenna (should have been about 3' long) on his roof, so he's pretty sure a radio operator. I didn't get to hold on to him, as I was going straight and he turned left, otherwise I definatly would have asked him myself. So has anyone ever tried a construction like that? And does it work? I can't really imagine it does, just because it is not high enough. I would like to hear your comments,

8  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / cig. adapter (part II) on: June 25, 2002, 12:59:22 AM
Ok, i read the previous article about powering a mobile with the cigarette adapter. K0BG wrote, that he doesn't recommends it as a rig is too big of a load for the adapter. If I remember it right, you guys were talking about 300 watts to put on the adapter. What, if I would use a 50/35 watt mobile on it? Would it still be too much? The reason I am asking is, that im here just as an exchange student, and I don't think, my hostparents would apreciate it, if I would drill holes in the firewall or things like that. So, im only 3 more weeks here in the states, could I use this method at least for this time as a compromise?
thanks,
Kilian, KC9AIK
9  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / Power- Needs? on: June 22, 2002, 12:14:27 AM
Hi,
does anyone know, what the exact powerneeds of a Kenwood TM-733A are? (I specially need the amount of amps and watts needed)
Thanks,

10  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / mobile antenna on: June 22, 2002, 12:08:47 AM
I would consider this, but the car i am using is build in the style of a Volkswagen Jetta, which has no trunk. Thats the whole problem here.

11  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / mobile antenna on: June 20, 2002, 09:13:45 PM
Hi folks,
I need to buy a mobile antenna for 2m/70cm but I have no clue which one. I need an antenna, which is no higher than 16" otherwise it is most likely to get killed by driving in my garage.I already looked at the reviews here @ eham.net, but it doesn't bring me any closer to a decission. do you guys have any suggestions?
Thanx a lot,

12  eHam Forums / HomeBrew / Selfmade powersupply on: June 20, 2002, 08:53:47 PM
Hi folks,
I want to power a Kenwood tm-733a as a base station. I build in school this one batterycharger/ powersupply.  It has 2 different poweroutputs. I measured the low one with about 8 volts and the high one which has about 20-22 volts. unfortunatly i can't say much about the amount of amps, because my amperemeter just goes up to 500mA, which the supply exeeds for sure. So, as far as I know, both output- settings aren't any good for powering a mobile rig. do you guys have any suggestions what I could do in this case (besides buying a power supply)? Are there any mods I could do to this PS to improve its performance towards my needs? Another factor I have to consider is this: I am leaving the country in 3 weeks and im already really low on space and weight, so buying another supply (which is probably really heavy) is not suitable.

By the way, can any of you guys tell me, what the power- needs of a Kenwood Tm-733a are anyway?
thank you very much,

13  eHam Forums / Misc / Power Supplies on: June 19, 2002, 02:17:58 AM
Hi everyone,
this may sound a little stupid, but I recently wondered a lot about the following thing. Is there any reason, why I can not use an ordinary wall plug-in adaptor to power a mobile rig, instead of having one of those huge, heavy power supplies running???
Thanks a lot,

14  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / Icom IC-207H on: June 04, 2002, 07:17:02 PM
Hi,
i just wondered how easy (or hard) is programming the IC-207h, as it has no alphanumeric display? And in what other ways does the missing alphanumeric display affect the radio and the way to operate it?
Thanks a lot, KC9AIK
15  eHam Forums / Mods And Repairs / Mod for ICOM 207H on: May 27, 2002, 08:54:35 PM
Is there a mod for the ICOM IC-207h, so that it has an extended RX of the area between 450-470MHz?
Thanx a lot,
73 Kilian
