I se a lot of Go boxes and i like them all, I was kind of thinking these go boxes weigh a lot and in a time of disaster you could be on the move all the time, how easy is it to carry around these go boxes and can tey be used on the run?

Thank you for the replies, I think for now i will stay on 10 meters. I have a good setup now with a Icom 706M2G, a wilson mag mount CB antenna (tuned to 28.400) and a Marine battery in the back Of my Honda Fit. It is very rare that i cant contact someone on 10 meters that i hear. The last 2 days has been dead, no activity at all. Does anybody use the 10 meter repeaters? Joel KF6DBZ

Thank you for your replies. I have purchased Mr west's book for the General license and will upgrade in a few months. I also thought about Morse code but i haven't explored that area yet. I drive a Honda Fit. One concern is the antenna. I am using a Icom 706M2G with a Wilson magmount CB antenna i matched to the radio for 10 meters. This setup works excellent as i have no trouble talking all over the world, I go to work at 2 PM California time and go home at 2 AM. At 2 AM there is nothing on 10 meters but when i go to work the band is active, the last few weeks i have talked to Japan and i heard Austrailia too. The big consideration for me is the antenna setup on the car, The Fit is a small car so i cant have a 20 foot antenna on the roof, that will be the major decision for a new HF band when i get my new license. Sorry about the choppy message.

AD5ZC, Why would you say something like that? I asked for thoughts and you reply with that? I dont understand the mindset that would make you do that. Just trying to start a conversation.
Anyway, because of people like you i am ready to sell my ham radios, I have talked to alot of ham radio operators and most of them are the CB type. I dont need that, I thought this was professional radio. Kind of strange seems like the HF people are ok but VHF people most are ok but there seems to be more of the CB type there, thats why i stay on HF but everytime i try 2 meters stuff happens, well no more. I am done.

I put up the antenna all is good. No interference or anything like that. If i had a direct line from the antenna to the power lines id would be at least 30-40 feet. I felt the mounting was safe i just wanted to see what everybody said. Thnak you for your comments and concerns.

The high power lines are atleast 40 feet in the air, if the antenna were to blow ove there is no way it would reach the wires. i think it will be ok, just wanted to see what other people think. Thank you for your input.

Hello, I want to put my Arrow 2 meter J pole on the garage roof to use my Icom 706. The problem is there are power lines in the alley behind my garage. The antenna will be about 20 feet in the air and about 20 feet from the wires, Is this too close to be safe? I want to put a 10 meter ringo up in the furture is this too close for that antenna? i am worried about arcing from the wires.
Thank you for your input.

I cut the antenna for 28.400 because i don't have a general license yet so i can only talk on 28.300 to 28.500. The SWR goes up quick so if i cut it for higher freq it will still work at 28.400?

Hello, I am using a Wilson 11 meter magmount antenna for my 706 right now. I cut the Antenna for 28.400 and the antenna works good at 28.400 but if i go up to 29.400 the SWR is way to high if not off the radios scale. Does anybody know a good 10 meter magmount antenna that will have a low SWR for the whole 10 meter band?

I have a Arrow J Pole 2 meter/440 antenna about 20 feet in the air and i use a icom 706 M2g radio. I am in the los angeles area and i can use the Catalina island repeater from my house with no problems. Catalina island is approx 26 miles away from me but it is over water. I however do have Palos Verdes which is approx 1000 feet high sitting right in between me and Catalina island. Like it was said before 50 watts and a good antenna should work fine.
