46  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: icom 735 cw filter on: January 10, 2012, 09:55:47 AM
I am sure it is too late but the 250 Hz would be a much better way to go.  I believe Icom no longer makes filters but Inrad make some pretty darned good non OEM ones.

The higher your license class, the more bands/frequencies you may choose not to use.

""It is a pain-in-the-butt to convert things to the old imperial system. (how many drachmas to the dollar? ounces to gallons? newtons to dynes? curies to berquels?, ounces to troy ounces? kilometers to feet?)""

And then there is furlongs per fortnight.
49  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Good operating procedure question on: September 06, 2011, 09:13:16 PM
I have learned to live with no more FCC testing, no more code requirement end even vanity calls that let junior members have an old time call but those out of district calls; makes me crazy.

There's a local (St. Louis) guy that got his vanity call while working in Guam.  The other day he answered a CQ and the caller sounded like he was doing hand stands with the prospect of a nice piece of DX.  When our local boy said "I'm in St. Louis" you could almost hear the calling station mumbling 'a$$&Øll' under his breath and you know what? I don't blame him one little bit!

Legal to not add the correct call area? Unfortunately yes.  Crummy? You bet, at least I think so.

The D students have taken over.
51  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: 1950s RC Toy Bus Controlled by Spark Transmitter - Amazing on: August 08, 2011, 12:18:07 PM
Guess I'm showing my age (66) but I had one as a kid.   You had to keep pushing the xmit button to step thru three or four turning steps.     I tried to "DX" with the thing by hooking a long wire to the xmitter output.......knocked me on my butt!!!!!!!!

A D-Star repeater perhaps??
53  eHam Forums / Company Reviews / RE: The insanity of Paypal on: June 21, 2011, 08:21:49 AM
If you read, and I mean really read the agreement with them when you sign up, I suspect no right minded person would do it.   It's like CC&R's.."you signed it; you will jolly well live with it"!

You sign away damned near every financial right you have. No one, not your credit card company nor your State's Attorney General's Office helps much if at all; Paypal isn't afraid of ATG's offices...heck, many states have had suits against them.  I doubt if the Feds can rattle their cage.

Thank you  KG4RUL........that looks like it will do exactly what I have been looking for.
55  eHam Forums / Emergency Communications / NOAA WX monitor question on: March 08, 2011, 06:39:46 PM
This thread seemed the closest to where this question may belong.....if not, forgive me.

I want to know if someone knows of a NOAA WX monitor that in addition to SAME would allow me to select what warnings will activate it?

I am weary of hearing 'watches' in general (only wanting 'warnings') and especially flash flood 'warnings' in particular especially since there is nothing to flood antwhere near me. Where I live, if it flooded they would have to rewrite the Bible. Wink

If you know of one let me know via  kØcba at yahoo.com.

Tnx, Bob
56  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: ic 735. plastic drop cover on front. on: February 09, 2011, 11:29:22 AM
I wrapped mine in several layers packing paper and keep it with my package of manuals.

I love my old 735 but that was close to the dumbest design idea ever.

I saw one on eBay a few weeks ago from a parted out 735 and it went for around $35.00 (ouch)

I have always wondered what it would cost to have a plastic company make up three or four hundred of them.  If the price wouldn't stop your heart in mid-beat I'll bet you could sell every one of them at a handsome profit.

"now do know of a good paint to use on the top/bottom covers. has a couple of rust spots on the edges.??."

The chances of 'matching' the paint is next to nil.  They all use an electrically charged powder type paint.....nothing will match it.

Your only chance is to have the entire cabinet sand blasted down to bare metal and then try to find some flat grey paint that sort of matches the OEM color.  It will be as noticable as a sore tooth but who knows, you may be happy with the results.

Bob
58  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: 10 meter negative press on: January 09, 2011, 10:21:48 PM
I see several comments like...."I still have yet to understand roger beeps..echo boxes...."

It all started when NASA began using it on space shots to let the ground stations and the craft adjust for the time delay encountered over long distances. It was basically just an electronic "over".

The bedwetters on CB decided it was way cool and it has taken on a life of it's own ever since.

The echo crap started in the early 60's when the top 40 R&R stations were trying to one up competing stations. Some engineer slapped a reverb on the DJ's mic and again, bedwetters..way cool,  ete., etc.
59  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: SignalLink USB Hum Problem on: January 09, 2011, 10:04:43 PM
I had the same trouble when using a laptop when it was on it's nasty little power supply.

Unplugged it and ran on it's battery.......shazaaam, input and output clean as a whistle.

Maybe something to check out.
60  eHam Forums / Digital / RE: Need help using SingaLink USB w/ Icom IC-T70A H/T on: December 07, 2010, 09:30:04 AM
I'm just takin' a shot in the dark here but getting audio into and out off your walkie squalkie to the Signalink is easy......I believe the problem will be that HTs have manual PTT switches and therefore no way to key the transmitter.
