I had that thought also.  But just not sure what kind of block would accept 8awg, 10awg, etc.

Hopelessly new....

Thanks for the advice.  I guess I will go with the permanence of a butt splice.

The 8awg is already run.  I put it in in case I want to expand in the future with HF, amp, power converter, etc.  Who knows.

Any suggestions on the best way to connect 8 awg cable to an FT8800?  I was considering using powerpoles, but saw that the connectors for 8awg and 10awg are sized differently.

I'd like something a little better than solder and shrink wrap.

Alan,

Would it change your mind if you were only running v/u fm?

I have read quite a few strings on FM modulation to run audio through the car stereo. That solution seems like to much a distraction for me personally. However has anyone had experience with a direct connection to the stereo using something like the GM12-AUX?

Right away I noticed the plug ins are different vs. an 8900 audio out.

Anyone know whether this would work?

Thanks for the input.  I have an Avalanche.  I am leaning toward a roof mount if I can make it happen.

Alan - I checked your website course, but did not see any examples of a roof mount.   (but many other great ideas.

Any thoughts out there about the viability of mounting a transciever on the headliner/cab roof?

Thanks for all the good info.  A little more technical than my paygrade, but I can give it some study.

KOBG,

Thanks.  A few questions for you if you dont mind.  Do you know of anywhere where I can read up on a possible new Yaesu release?  Or is this just rumor for now.

I think I have a decent handle on some of the model differences.  I am just really struggling with how much I want to dive in.  Do I want to play AAA or go pro....

I have read quite a bit of your material (web site and email strings.  Very Helpful.  Thanks.)  But noticed your early critisims of the 7000 were a little sharper in the past. i.e. no video in.  poor screen resolution, etc.  Are you feeling differently now?

Is anyone aware of any upcomming new releases of mobile models?  Or updates to existing models.  I am really struggling with what mobile to purchase and want to make sure I dont buy something only to see a new model release 2 months later.  I am trying to decide btw the FT8900, FT857, FT897 or IC7000.

Yeah.  I guess I am willing to pay a little more to have 1 radio.  It just seems like such a difficult problem to solution.  You'd figure there would be a lot of Amatuers out there who have wive's not interested in the exam.

Question for KC8VWM.....programing all possible repeater pairs seems like a great idea.  But how does that work if you could have any possible CTCSS code on the repeater?

Thanks.  A few things.....Ruggedness as you point out.  Performance.

And lastly, (and I may be getting myself in some trouble here) I would like to have capability in amateur and GMRS in the same unit.  (I will be applying for a GMRS license).  I know there are some issues around type acceptance but am thinking their are units out there approved for 90 and 95.

My reason for wanting both services in one radio is so that I can practice amateur and also use the units with my wife in the malls (when I am not feeling like spending time in the Gap Wink)

I am almost afraid to hear your answer, so be gentle.  Thanks
