1  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / RE: A piece of Radio History and a weird little circuit to get it done! on: May 20, 2013, 06:25:52 PM
Guys, here is the schematic for the amp...

http://www.cbtricks.com/Amp/pace/px200_bl/graphics/pace_px200_bl_om.pdf

Please not that all three finals are in parallel, and that the bases are returned to ground via 0.82uH choke. There is no forward biasing on the finals, and they are not being run linear. The manual spec's AM or FM operation. It was very common for early CB AM amps to be run close to Class C. The IMD was horrendous, but they sounded okay on channel.

If it is a business band amp, chances are it is biased for FM operation and is very non linear on SSB. It may sound good to the other station, but the IMD products (splatter) are probably horrendous.

Reality is that it appears to be a CB Amp:

and many of those were also horribly non-linear in SSB service.

With Directv, you had better have a service contract for the equipment maintenance before trying to play the call and complain game... otherwise it is a 50 dollar service call charge to your acct. every time they run a tech out to your house.

Sounds like the internal switching power supply. I suspect you will need to install AC line rated bypass caps inside of the amp to kill the noise. It sounds like common-mode radiation, where all three legs of the power line are being used as a "single wire antenna."  Ferrites will help with common mode radiation, but it takes a lot of inductance in some cases.

Hi Dale, sure glad you posted this... I have two SBE-33 transceivers that need restoration. Now I am anxious to get at least one of them back on the air. Unfortunately, someone removed all of the tubes and transistors from one of them.

Gosh, all the cheap old-fart hams are coming out of the woodwork on this one.

At least they have call letters and aren't hiding their identities... and actually making useful posts. Imagine that?

Silver tarnish caused by sulfur dioxide in the air isn't conductive. It depends what caused the patina.

Sounds like the PL level might be set just a bit too on 440 MHz. If it works after you key up the repeater with a HT, then I'd guess it is a PL deviation problem. Best way to check it is to find someone with a deviation or service monitor to verify that the PL level is at 600 Hz deviation.

Gene... that is a sticky wicket. Is it more wrong to just grab the easy ones on a net, and fight the herds for the rare ones? Or, should we work the easy ones in the open, and hope that stations like A51JS show up on a net Smiley

I'd wonder what guys would do if a P5 showed up, a once in a lifetime shot per the NK government, who was only authorized (or wanted) to operate in a net?  What that QSO, on the net, was the final ATNO for HR?

10  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: Card chaser or Award chaser? on: April 07, 2013, 06:23:32 AM
I'm always chasing new band/modes for 160-10 DX; I don't chase counties, and so far I have r=no passion for digital modes. Although I have 317 confirmed mixed, and confirmed over 150 everywhere except 160, I have not submitted for DXCC. Most likely if/when I make honor roll level, I will submit the cards. Until then I feel like one of the guys in the pack with nothing special to brag about.

I'm about in the same boat with country totals (mixed.)  I need to find time and figure out what countries have come and
gone since around 1993 or so--that's when I stopped DXing for a decade or so.

Well, when Jim Smith activate A5, I didn't regret having signed into one of his sanctioned nets Smiley

Besides, 99% of the net stuff seems to be very common DXCC countries, I can't of too many rare ones that I've heard on nets.

Really good sig on 10meters now at 2215... Got them after a few calls

Got em with a couple calls.  Much better signal now than 30 min. ago.
(45 watts into my wire vertical. Forgot to turn the amp to transmit Roll Eyes)

73, Gene AF3Y

Got them with a few calls soon afterwards. Went and had supper, and when I came back tried
again with no problem. Must have been the noise level was high at their location when I
first tried... they were weaker when I came back but got em.
I worked and they weren't CQing Smiley
13  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: 5W0M is QRV on: April 06, 2013, 03:31:30 PM
He is on 12 meter CW, calling CQ... good sig into CT, but I can't raise him with a Kw into a log!

I wonder if Bill's Walvus Bay card ever counted??  I may have a deleted country I wasn't aware of.

I've found that ANYTHING that was worked on a net was workable in the open at a later date. I'll also confess that 99% of my rarest DX entities were entirely due to DX clusters, starting with the old YCCC packet system on two meters.

And if you got on the wrong side of 'PHO, you never worked DX on his nets Smiley
