1  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Anyone had antenna pole break? on: May 21, 2013, 06:56:12 AM
Only time I've seen a metal pole fail was during the teardown of an 80m 1/4-wave vertical. With about 50' left in the air, someone on the guy lines stopped paying attention...

That was before I started running regularly, still managed to move rather quick  Tongue
2  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: Where to get IRCs on: February 13, 2013, 11:41:08 AM
Not terribly surprised - no post office within 50 miles of here would stock any more than 5 IRCs at a time.

Does make things more of a PITA for hams who don't accept green stamps, or places high in theft...
3  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Current Technician Exams on: February 13, 2013, 11:34:27 AM
I used a TI-83+ for all the tests, although I wasn't asked if the memory was cleared  Cheesy

Even for the Extra, it's more concept-oriented - you're not going to be building multivariable models that need serious computing power.
4  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: First HF contact! on: February 13, 2013, 07:11:59 AM
PGT:  Congratulations!!  The first one is always memorable.....one you will never forget.

I wish I could remember who was my first contact - I actually did forget  Grin

I got my first taste of DX on 6 meters; same kind of unpredictability as 10. Talking to locals one minute, the next there's a guy halfway across the country calling CQ 5KHz up Smiley
5  eHam Forums / Satellites / RE: So where does the satellite hobby stand now? on: January 28, 2013, 01:08:17 PM
Kind of sad, I was looking through an ARRL Handbook from 2000, back then you had your choice of modes from HF to microwaves Sad
6  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: Radio Shack Shares at $2. The Slide Continues on: October 07, 2012, 10:10:20 AM
12 years is positively ancient for RS - think about all the things people use on a regular basis that simply didn't have any market penetration in 2000.
7  eHam Forums / Clubs / RE: Club meetings via Skype / H.323 video conferencing on: October 07, 2012, 10:06:49 AM
Our club does not do this and never will. The whole Idea of the once a month meeting is to get folks together that other wise never see each other. what good is having a meeting with no one in person? we do that all the time when we talk on the radio! I for one cant see totally taking the eye to eye meeting out of ham radio...geeze everyone is so disconnected from the real world now!!

Dan/NØFPE

If someone is out of town for the club meeting, they might not always be in a place to talk on the radio with club members. If I'm stuck in a hotel room on a meeting night halfway across the country, I'd rather teleconference in than miss the meeting entirely.

But only as the exception to the rule - otherwise you're right, it'd be defeating the point of belonging to a local club.
8  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: Professional Women reject Ham Radio. As they should on: September 16, 2012, 10:54:59 AM
Professional women don't reject amateur radio.  They just reject WA4D.   Wink

...and that about sums it up.  Cheesy
9  eHam Forums / Contesting / RE: What is the contest I am hearing? on: September 16, 2012, 10:53:36 AM
WAE

Worked all Europe.  It is my least favorite contest.  There is never anything rare activated for this one...

There may not be anything rare, but I picked up Montenegro which I have been after for a while.  You never know.

4O3A? They're usually at least 59 on a toaster on the East Coast Cheesy
10  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Antenna Mast For Arrow OSJ 146/440 on: August 23, 2012, 09:55:33 AM
They're a local company, so I may be biased, but these guys always seem to get good reviews: http://tmastco.com/

If this is a permanent install, can you roof-mount it?
11  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: amp quesrion on: August 23, 2012, 09:53:20 AM
I don't know of ANY amplifier that will work with a "Yeasu".

C'mon, you've never fat-fingered while typing?  Tongue Rough crowd...

'VSG - what kind of operating do you do, mostly? Amp selection depends on factors like:

- Do you need 160m? Not every amp covers Top Band.
- Do you operate CW, and need QSK?
- 120VAC or 220VAC to the shack? Not having 220 will limit your selections.
12  eHam Forums / CW / RE: Remember This? on: August 23, 2012, 05:55:41 AM
Lots of really good thoughts here. As Rick and Bob said, Koch probably isn't the best way to learn to type. You bet Rob, people learn in different ways. Bob said

Did you try Koch with wide character space 20/5, after success narrow it to 20/10 and after success 20/15? Is possible per lesson, but also for the whole course by repeating the course 3 times with increased speed.
My understanding is that this isn't Koch at all, but rather Farnsworth timing. The promise of Koch is immediate recognition at full speed. It was too hard for me, and many others too I suspect. It kind of makes you wonder how much faith the programmers really have in Koch, when Farnsworth is an option on most Koch Morse education programs Smiley.  73 de Tom ab9nz

I've had pretty good luck combining FW spacing and the Koch add-a-character approach, with 10wpm set as the absolute slowest speed I hear.
13  eHam Forums / VHF / UHF / RE: 2 meter/440 amplifer on: August 21, 2012, 07:16:27 PM
RF Concepts made a dual band one: http://www.eham.net/classifieds/detail/339994

Would be my choice if one could be found used Smiley
14  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / RE: UTC CLOCK FOR Win 7 DESKTOP on: August 09, 2012, 10:01:42 AM
The one in N1MM works for me  Tongue
15  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: Can the Japanese withstand the Chinese Radio onslaught? on: August 09, 2012, 09:59:45 AM
I also remember the days when "made in Japan" meant a very poor quality product - one to be avoided.
Dr Deming who introduced quality control into Japan is counted as a hero by Japanese industry.
His take on business practices was profound and readily took root in Japan.

One of his many quotes:

"Profit in business comes from repeat customers, customers that boast about your project or service, and that bring friends with them."
W. Edwards Deming

"It is not necessary to change. Survival is not mandatory."  Cheesy Deming has some gems out there.

What's amazing about Deming is that he tried his ideas at home first - US industry, in its postwar, Galbraithian-haze of dominating the world marketplace, told him to go take a hike. The Japanese had the patience for long-term production planning; they were facing years of rebuilding anyway.
