1  eHam Forums / VHF / UHF / RE: Repeaters along Rt. 81 Through PA/MD/VA/WV on: January 20, 2011, 05:50:33 PM
Thanks guys for the info.

I do have repeater POI's on my GSP that will list the freq/tone for nearby ones as I drive, but programming a VX-7 while driving (or sitting for that matter) is really hard to do!

Thanks Guys.  I was trying to avoid Travel Plus since I didn't want to shell out the $40 to eliminate a little bit of manual labor.

Thanks!
Brian

I left out that I was looking for an easy way to locate these repeaters.  I have the directory, but I am not certain of the geographic locations of the places listed.

Thanks Again,
Brian

Does anyone know where I can find of list of repeaters (2m/70cm and maybe 6m) covering Rt 84 through PA, MD, VA, WV?  I'll be traveling by car down to Greensboro, NC soon and would like to program my VX-7 to those freqs in rough order from North to South.

Creative labs also does this with their products.  Again, a proper resistor or two corrects this issue.
6  eHam Forums / Emergency Communications / RE: Greatest Threat to National Security we never even think about. on: December 08, 2010, 11:07:51 AM
I agree somewhat with the pandemic scenario.   However, I personally think damage to the power grid would cause the greatest impact upon society.  Think about how just about anything we do today requires electricity.  Heat, refrigeration, medical equipment, lighting, computers, pumps for fuel for vehicles that transport food, televison, traffic signals, drawbridges, etc.

Sadly, the "grid" is easily accessed - the wires are right out there in the open.

Is there a way to reduce this risk over time?  People need to become aware of the risks and become a bit more self reliant upon themselves.  The less emphasize we place upon grid delivered electricty, the stronger we become.

7  eHam Forums / Emergency Communications / RE: Least expensive starter battery system help on: December 08, 2010, 10:56:52 AM
I picked up 2 SLA 50AH batteries that were removed from some industrial UPS machines (annual change over).  I charge these with a 3 stage battery charger (1/2 amp).  It has worked fine for me to power my ham shack.  Granted, I listed about 95% of the time, so draw is minimal.  During a week long ice storm I ran the shack quite often along with some 12 volt lighting as well.

Prior to the SLA, I had an 80AH Deep Cycle 12 volt battery charged with a Wally world 1 amp trickle/float charger.  This battery, still held in reserve in a charged state, along with the SLAs, are all kept in the bulkhead of my basement.  Any hydrogen generated dissipates out through the very leaky bulkhead.

8  eHam Forums / Misc / motorola rpu2160 Portable Repeater - Use On 70cm/GMRS???? on: November 23, 2010, 07:04:56 AM
I was just looking online at the motorola rpu2160 portable repeater.  It's a neat little unit (2 watts) that is designed for UHF business frequencies.  I was wondering if anyone would know if it can be reprogrammed to the 70 cm ham band or the GMRS band (the portion of which uses repeaters).

9  eHam Forums / APRS / RE: Cell phone GPS hacks. on: November 10, 2010, 08:20:29 AM
Any chance of finding a phone that will enable you to download an app and send time and GPS coordinates as a TEXT message?  I have unlimited texting and a periodic send of my location as a TEXT message would permit a machine at home monitoring TEXT messages to reformat and send it to the APRS system.
10  eHam Forums / Emergency Communications / RE: How about using marine radios during "katrina" type emergency? on: October 27, 2010, 11:40:18 AM
Keep in mind that marine radios are not only used along the coast, but are also used inland.  Using a radio in Montana may interfer with boaters there.
11  eHam Forums / VHF / UHF / RE: VHF/UHF magnet mount dual band antennas on: October 13, 2010, 01:49:36 PM
I only use my mag mount on my wife's minivan.  I'm 6' tall and can't see the scratches it must leave on the roof.  So, if you have a minivan, don't sweat it too much.  Of course, a car is a different story.

15  eHam Forums / Misc / Champion 2000 Watt Inverter Generator - 73531i on: August 23, 2010, 12:21:01 PM
Has anyone had any experience with this generator?  Champion, inverter 2000/1600 surge/running, eco mode, low decibels (53).

Sam's Club has them on sale for $499 here in NH.

I'm guessing it and/or its engine is made far offshore at this price.
