eHam Forums / CW / Using my mic as a keyer.....

This might have been discussed previously in this forum. However, if it has not, I thought it an informational gesture to explain my latest experience.
While reading the manual regarding the wiring, I noted that on the Icom 718, you can use the Up/Down buttons on the hand mic to send CW. They act as a keyer; one button for dots and the other for dashes.
It took a little getting use to. However, this evening, I had my first "mic keyer QSO" with N2ESE in NJ. Gary said he owned a 718 too and had read about using the hand mic as a keyer but had never tried it. Now he thinks he might give it a shot....just for fun.
Ain't technology wonderful?

You've probably bought things with subunits older than that without knowing it. ---------------------------------------------------- Interesting point. There are probably PC boards along with other "plug and play" units inside these rigs that are older than 2007!
In fact, speaker and key jacks might be from 1999! ;-)

Oh, lord..... No wonder they are outsourcing our customer service reps overseas..... If I had to put up with nit-picky stuff like this from customers all day, I'd land up a Prozac candidate.... Unless there was a "quirk" in previously mfg'ed models....who cares? (And PLEASE don't ANYONE use a car analogy! It ain't the same. A "never sold" 2007 would have a ton of consumer test miles on it and would be sold at a clearance price. The Yaesu has no consumer "test miles"....)

Ya know, I've been signed up for LOTW for years now. The last time I checked, I didn't have any cards.
HOWEVER, I've had to steadily work at whittling down the QSL's I found on eQSL. I'm makin' progress. But heck, I've got QSO's/QSL's in there dating back three years!
However, to be honest, eQSL is kind of enjoyable.

I'm always seeing how great HRO is.
I've had one experience with HRO and that was that. There's a term we use here in the Midwest: "New York rude". Best way I can describe the experience.
Although this HRO Outlet wasn't in NY, it was close enough. Hi.

Here, here!
I ordered a MINT used Kenwood TS-430S online ON A SATURDAY NIGHT! Called up Monday morning to confirm that I had beat all others to the unit. I was told it was mine and on the way. Got it that Wednesday!
Did the mods to prevent it from blowing the finals and to put it on 60 meters. You will often hear me on 60 meters during the fall/winter. I'm the fella with the great audio! ;-)

Wow! I guess they are legit!
I decided to wander over their after receiving a promo for free advertising for my ham business. While there, I decided to sign up and check into those 70+ cards.
I was amazed! Nice cards from the people I was in QSO with according to my own personal logs.
For some reason, the cards would not print up to 4 x 6 when I attempted to use their function. However, I was able to "Copy Image", put on MS Word and make them roughly 4 x 6. Since I make my own homebrew cards using software, I decided to use the same card stock I use on my own cards. It worked out well and they all look highly professional.
A lot of work to do over the next few weeks as I try to match what is in there with what is in my personal logs with what has already been done via SASE. These eQSL's go all the way back to 2000!

How many of you remember "The Little Print Shop"?
I opened an envelope today and knew right away it was a card by "The Little Print Shop"! Nice memories!! This fella must've ordered a ton of these. Although just a slight bit yellowish, it was remarkably well preserved. He probably keeps them in an airtight container.

I just received the following e-mail: Hello (WA8MEA), I have sent you an electronic QSL card. You can pick it up by going to http://www.eQSL.cc As soon as you register, you can display and print my eQSL and the other 77 eQSLs waiting for you there. 73, KC4TVZ ---------------------------------------------------- Now I don't think this is affiliated with LOTW. And I don't do much DX. Most of my contacts are Special Events and those are specially printed QSL's and certificates. I just don't see how in the hell I've got 77 e-QSL's waiting for me there! Anyone else know anything about these folks??? 73, Bill - WA8MEA
