61  eHam Forums / Elmers / RF triggering CO detector? on: March 15, 2011, 09:05:07 AM
Has anyone experienced their CO detector sounding its chirpy little alarm via amateur radio RF energy?

I just bought a new, First Alert this past weekend.  It's battery op.

I have not heard anything since installation on Saturday.  However, after getting on 40 for the first time since Saturday, I noticed the little chirps of the alarm going off.  After I reset, it's not "chirping" any longer.

However, I cannot get the device to replicate the chirps by transmitting on 40 meters again.  A particular frequency might have been the culprit, but I'll be danged if I know what exacyt frequency I was on this morning.

I guess I'd feel safer knowing if someone else has had issues with RF setting of CO detectors....

The Yaesu MH31B8 mic works great.  A little different appearance but basically the same mic.

See ya'll on 60 meters with my new "used" 747!

Will the Yaesu MH31B8 work with a Yaesu FT-747?

66  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Any common problems with the Ic 718? on: December 18, 2010, 07:58:00 AM
I've had numerous 718's over the years.

One common denominator: They all went nuts (as you describe) with excess RF in the shack.

Also, I've had other rigs perform as you describe that don't have large enough wiring to carry the current from the PS to the rig....even in short lengths.

I've also had Yeasu's go nuts with RF when connected to ANY power supply, but work perfectly fine with a marine battery.

So...have fun!  Experimenting can be educational!

This past week, I was surfing the channels and came across PBS NOVA.  This weeks episode was about fractal geometry.

I IMMEDIATELY put the remote down to watch this program since I recall a young ham by the name of Chip being knocked around and beat up on Usenet back in the 1990's because of his fractal antenna theories/designs.  Some of these lids were unmerciful to the poor guy.  However, Chip always carried himself VERY professionally in responding to these Usenet attack dogs.

So I'm watching the program, enjoying the mathematical, geometrical, computerization and artistic concepts of fractals....when lo and behold....they mentioned Chip on the program!  Then suddenly he appears in an interview and I immediately thought; "They laughed at Galileo, too!"

I see some folks still won't give up on the scientific principals of fractals.  Hang it up, boys!  Chip was right....whether it's HF, VHF or UHF!  Fractals are being used in ALL phases of communications!

I always like a story where the one being bullied wins in the end......

BTW, little did I realize that my 160 meter "dipole" is more fractal than dipole.  I have it in bent into the shape of a star....allowing it to fit on my lot, with very minimal SWR.

How long can the residual smell of burning circuitry last inside a rig?

Please see the thread that was originally entitled:

ten tec going out of business???

I tried to clean this up and make it one thread, since someone renamed the:

ten tec going out of business??? thread....

However, the system won't let me delete and it won't let me notify a moderator.

Kinda make the original post (and follow-up) suspect, doesn't it?

Hey, Lon.

It works both ways.

Years ago, I spent the good bit of an hour attempting to explain to a female SWL how she could/should connect her new antenna she purchased from us.  After a while, I knew we were not getting anywhere (she was not radio savvy....) and felt it best to just offer her a refund and return postage both ways.

About 4:55 pm that evening, I get a call from an irate husband with a thick NJ accent.  He accused me of calling his wife stupid and then made cracks about me being a Jew. (I'm not, but that's beside the point....)

He then said he was gonna drive all the way to Michigan to "kick my a--".  I strongly invited him to do just that and requested that he bring any sons along since I have five very athletic young sons who have lettered in collegiate and high school sports and they would love to join in!

He hung up.  I never heard from him again nor did I get the antenna back.

I also recall being in a local Radio Shack that was closing its doors.  The manager was on the phone while some jerk kept interrupting him, asking him questions about various clearance items.  The RS manager finally told him he was being rude, that he was on the phone and as soon as he was off....he'd answer his questions.

The a--hole hauled off and threw a pack of D cells straight at the manager's family jewels!  I mean he TAGGED 'em!  The poor fella buckled in pain.

There were enough witnesses in the store at the time so the manager was able to get a nice settlement out of it. (He said he was swollen for days, but no permanent damage....)

Ordered a Kaito shortwave/mp3 player late Friday.  It came yesterday.

Only problem is, I wish I had read the dimensions.  This is a little, tiny critter!

No fault of Universal.  I give 'em a 5 out of 5.  Very friendly sales rep.

Prompt delivery.

Right now, if Hal had an Ameco AC-1 and a Hammarlund 180, I'd donate one of my kidneys AND pay top dollar for them.
