106  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: How do you hide a new radio in you shack from your on: September 06, 2012, 06:36:09 PM
hi

I got 99% of my gear used and when my wife tells me
'you got another box today,it was heavy, I tossed it in the garage'

I tell her thanks!

All my gear was paid for from buying and selling other gear.

My wife can cook and I keep her in plain sight!

hi,

what make and model radio are you going to use?

my older kenwood th-78a can run 12vdc off the
power jack on the radio or using battery packs.

best to check the manual before you try it.

112  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / RE: Safe loading and testing of tubed linear PSU HV output? on: August 31, 2012, 06:14:46 PM
Not sure of your location, are you close to a
university, tv or radio station?

Contact the engineering dept and see if they
can help you test the unit with a large
dummy load as W8JI recommended.

If you decide to test the unit yourself,
be sure that you have somebody there to
watch you on the outside chance you get into
trouble, it could save your life.

114  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: Dummy Loads and Transformers PCB Oil Test on: August 27, 2012, 08:01:13 PM
Yes, the starting capacitors could have PCB in the oil,
but not for the compressors used for the refrigerant.
Mineral oils for R-12 and R-22 formulations.

115  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: Dummy Loads and Transformers PCB Oil Test on: August 27, 2012, 05:27:14 PM
hi,

PCBs were widely used as dielectric and coolant fluids,
for example in transformers, capacitors, and electric motors.

PCB not used in the compressors for refrigeration.

Chlorine burns green in the flame test, bottle green to be exact.

116  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: 48vDC/300watt switching power supply and RFI noise? on: August 22, 2012, 04:55:13 PM
hi,

Lambda also made great power supplies and they show up
all the time on ebay, often they sell for a lot less then
what they went for new.  look for alpha or vega series,
400 to 600 and even 1,000W switching mode supplies,
easy to adjust output voltages.
You can combine the modules if you want and experiment.

I like using the headlight load, local car recycle yard has
lots of them very inexpensive.

Perhaps they should sell off the amateur lines to MFJ.

Hi,

I agree, no way to run any business, looks like we should be
getting another post from Jim at Lido about how they want to
move on and give great customer service.
