77  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: HOW TO RESET A TS-850S THE A=B BUTTON MAKES THE VFO LOCK AND GO UP IN FREQUENCY on: November 06, 2012, 03:04:35 PM
hi ollie,

with the radio powered off,
hold the A=B button down
and turn on the radio.

has the internal battery been replaced recently?

often the battery gets low these radios don't behave
properly and a new battery and reset can clear up problems.

hi

if you decide to use a UPS, be sure to get one that
has full sine wave output, not a stepped or modified sine wave.

the APC SmartUps series is full sine wave and can also
be started up if no AC power is available and will run
on battery for a short time.

81  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: VFO Cable connector for Kenwood TS 520 on: November 01, 2012, 05:23:34 PM
hi Harry,

if you need manuals for the radio in PDF

http://www.n6wk.com/kenwood/

you can build your own cable if you want,
or there is a guy on ebay selling them.
the 9 pin connectors are available.

if you are not using the external VFO you will need
to verify the 9 pin plug is inserted at the rear of
the radio, otherwise it will not pass the 9v to the
vfo circuit.

If it is missing you can jumper pins
8 and 9 at the socket.  Details on page 10 of manual.

hi,

I agree, we've had several on the group below
have poor connections with the glass type fuses
and worn contact pins on the power connection
at the rear of the radio.

... two mixing oil with gas LOWERS octane of fuel too. I use 93 octane in chainsaw in summer.

Did you mean raise the octane of the fuel?

Adding oil to the gasoline will raise the octane. The amount that it will raise the octane though would be very little. The reason for this is twofold. First, with a fuel-oil ratio on the order of 25:1 - 50:1, there is actually very little oil added to the gasoline. Second, when the oil/gas mixture enters the cylinder, the oil will "drop out" while the gasoline will remain a vapor. this is due the oil's lower vaporization rate. If the oil didn't do this, there would be no lubricating effect and the engine would quickly seize.

how about operating our of  your car in the driveway?

run a short extension cord out to the car and
use mobile home built antenna.

Are there any parks close to the house?

88  eHam Forums / Mods And Repairs / RE: DUMMY LOAD FOR POWER SUPPLIES on: September 19, 2012, 07:13:44 PM
hi,

H6054 headlight from recycling yard about $2,
cut the wires a few feet before the bulb socket,
each 35W, per filament, this is dual beam so
you will pull 70W at 12V with one bulb.

I got two wired up with switch to run low beam
or both high and low beams.

They do get warm but a lot safer since it is
sealed beam lamp.

hi Cleveland,

can you check the coax jumper from the ts-50 to the at-50?
perhaps it has a bad connection at the pl259's.

If you attach dummy load to the at-50 will the problem repeat?

Have you replaced the lithium battery in the ts-50 recently?
Sometimes when these batteries reach end of life the radio
can develop problems that are solved with a new battery.
