IF the sub is putting garbage on the house wiring putting the sub on an isolation transformer may eliminate or reduce the noise.

Gud luck

Do you have screen voltage on the finals?  Without it your tubes are cut-off... 6146's usually run ~200V on the screens to get them to conduct.

Antennas are the most important item in a station.  In fact, I read a two part article in the old Ham Radio magazine on the train last night written by the man who invented the Bobtail Curtain.  Wow!  I never knew what a "killer" DX antenna this antenna is.... Now, I am tempted to try one for 40M....

Antennas are fun,

Vise Grips are all made in China.  I remember the big announcement by the manufacturer about 2 years ago.
I went out and bought 3 more before the US made stock was depleted.

Minimum standards for reviews?

C'mon, this is a hobby and anyone can submit a review even a person who "saw one" of the devices in question for 5 minutes and didn't like it for a reason, good, bad or irrelevant.

Do you ever read Yelp restaurant reviews?  Even they need to be taken with a grain of salt.

The only time I take Eham reviews on radios seriously is after the device has 50-100 reviews and even then
I scan them for the low ratings and read each to find out why.

Eham is providing a free service, they are NOT Consumer Reports or J.D. Powers so take it FWIW and move on.

The Eico transmitter is the 720, the modulator model number was 730 and it was an AM/CW transmitter.

7  eHam Forums / Boat Anchors / RE: Yaesu FT-902DM Power Transformer Specs. on: April 24, 2013, 11:20:08 AM
The FT902 is a 80's vintage hybrid much like the Kenwood 820,530,830.  You might hunt around for a transformer out of a Kenwood.  there are a couple of guys on the Kenwood 820, 830, 520,530 Yahoo Groups who sell parts.  Lots of parts for these still around.

Gud Luck,

Greg

Windex works well as a follow up rinse to anything cleaned with acid.  I used to use it to neutralize phosphoric acid used to take rust off metal parts.  Works great.

9  eHam Forums / Boat Anchors / RE: KWM2 Exciter tuning - strange behavior - Help! on: April 16, 2013, 01:55:47 PM
THe Heathkit LMO used a tuning capacitor with a 2 bazillion to 1 reduction gearing.  They only used about a fifth of the total available capacitor tuning and picked the most linear portion of its rotation.  I know because
I took one apart and saw the ingenious mechanical design.  The one I had was built for Heathkit by TRW and had a TRW sticker on it.
10  eHam Forums / Boat Anchors / RE: FT-902dm neutralising 6146b's using Kenwood method. on: April 11, 2013, 06:17:29 PM
Just find the screen supply wire and disconnect from both tubes.  That will duplicate the Kenwood SG switch.  YOu can then neutralize without burning up your finals.

11  eHam Forums / Propagation / RE: Heavy static on 20m on: April 10, 2013, 01:50:01 PM
The Sunspot count and flux are higher the past 4-6 days than they have been.  Also, we are moving toward summer.  AS a result, ionospheric absorbtion is affecting the higher frequencies like 20M.  As we move toward the summer solstice June 21st the daylight hours are longer and if the sunspot count and flux is high enough the ionosphere tends to absorb signals and get noisier during the daylight hours ( longer daylight hrs in the hemisphere)....

Here's an interesting thing to watch.  In summer the absorption tends to decay rapidly toward sundown but the ionosphere remains ionized for communication on 20M.  Some of the best DX on 20m then shows up from an hour or so before sunset till 4-6 hrs after sunset.  20M becomes an early evening DX band since there is no absorption but the F layer is still ionized because it was ionized for longer overall. .

FYI,

12  eHam Forums / Propagation / RE: Live and dead subbands on: April 09, 2013, 11:12:50 AM
I would agree with N0XE.  Activity is totally independent of propagation if the MUF is higher than the band and absorbtion isn't a factor.  BTW, I have seen 10M have no signals anywhere yet if I call CQ I get several contacts.  Since 1968 I have never seen or verified a band segment where there is no propagation if there are signals elsewhere in the band...
13  eHam Forums / Boat Anchors / RE: SB-200 connection to FTDX3000D on: April 09, 2013, 08:46:59 AM
The SB200 has over 130 volts on its keying line, you must use a relay buffer or you will 'smoke" yuour FT3000 when you key the linear.

14  eHam Forums / Boat Anchors / RE: Valiant LV choke burned up. on: April 05, 2013, 11:24:20 AM
Thanks guys, I was suspicious of insulation breakdown since the choke is 50 years old.  I'll solder everything back together and watch closely as I bring up the voltage.  I too thought it odd that the power supply fuses did not blow but the choke sure started smoking at around 60-7VAC on the variac....

Thanks again,

Greg
15  eHam Forums / Boat Anchors / Valiant LV choke burned up. on: April 05, 2013, 08:55:25 AM
The low voltage filter choke in my Valiant  ""cooked".... I have a replacement but I need some advice on how to check for downstream shorts in any Low voltage bypoass capacitors before I try it on the variac.  The filter caps have been replaced but the originals checked Ok on my checker (checked OK at 400V across them).  The Valiant manual is not very good for finding the various points where the LV line goes.  If anyone has any suggestions on a methodology to trace out all the loads and all the bypass caps I am all ears....

Thanks,

Greg
