The reason they're so readily available is because they're so miserable to work with that nobody wants to touch them. They were a pain in the butt to the commercial techs that had to service them back in the day.
I agree with Mark...stick to Spectras or later.

Where else but Eham could you find two pages of responses to a simple piece of punctuation?

Go to your nearest hobby shop that deals with model trains. Ask for some 12V "grain of wheat" bulbs. Works perfectly and fits nicely into the display recesses. A couple of bucks will net you a lifetime replacement supply.

eHam Forums / Repeaters / RE: 2M repeater tuned cavitys or 2 antennas

The separation distances required for even minimal acceptable isolation at 2 meters makes the two-antenna approach impractical. For example, you would need over 50 feet of vertical separation to obtain about 65 dB of isolation. Horizontal separation would be even further. The two-antenna approach is much more feasible at 440 and above.
You could buy a very nice duplexer for less than it would cost to implement the dual antenna system, plus you wouldn't need all the "real estate" to install it. Maintenance with a duplexer is a non-issue. Once it's tuned and in place, it's basically a "set it and forget it" deal. Our group bought a 4-cavity duplexer for under $1000 that works perfectly.

Here in Winter Park, FL a data stream sent over a Public Safety radio channel activates the sirens. The data side was designed by Federal Signal, and the Motorola shop I work for did the RF integration.

eHam Forums / Misc / RAY DOBSON IS A SCAMMER!!!

I was contacted by a "Ray Dobson" regarding a radio I have for sale. I should have been suspicious of the broken English that his emails were written in, but I went through to the point of getting payment. Guess what? He's using the "I'm sending you more than you asked for, wire the balance to such-and-such" scam. The emails are coming from " joerbn72@googlemail.com" Needless to say, I cut him off at the knees and advised him not to contact me again. I have saved all the emails though, and with any luck, I might still get his payment in the mail. Then I can sink this SOB over mail fraud. Watch out for this "alpha-hotel"!! 73, Larry, N2HBX

eHam Forums / Misc / RE: Repeater Police

When I departed from CB I remember was the term "handle" being used but not first personal - in fact had I heard someone use that term it would have taken a bit to figure out what was meant. It's definitely not terminology to use in a contest situation. Nowadays I hear folks on the ham band use "handle" somewhat "the handle here is..". We have our own terminology why use another? Sort of like international phonetics, it's made up so if we use the IP correctly everyone everywhere cal write out what we are saying despite the language o pronunciation. I don't believe in repeater or DX police unless someone is making a total disaster of the frequency but good operating practice should always prevail including the police IDing themselves.
"First personal" was used mostly by sideband operators to distinguish themselves as "higher class" operators than their handle-equipped good buddies on AM. 73, Larry, N2HBX

Look what happened when we followed someone else with the "yes we can" line!! Larry
