FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Long Island Amateur Radio Club to Host area event NEWS SUMMARY: Hundreds of Amateur Radio Operators from across New York City and Long Island will come to Bethpage to participate in the Outdoor Long Island Electronics Fair which is being sponsored by the Long Island Mobile Amateur Radio Club. (Bethpage, May, 2005) The Long Island Mobile Amateur Radio Club is sponsoring the Long Island Outdoor Electronics Fair on June 12th starting at 9am. Amateur Radio Operators, also known as “Hams”, from the tri-state area will come together to share in the buying, selling, and trading of used and new amateur radio equipment at Briarcliffe College, 1051 Stewart Avenue, Bethpage, New York. There will be information on the Amateur Radio Emergency Service and other served agencies such as the Red Cross, Salvation Army, National Weather Service and others. While this is a social event for the ham community it is also an opportunity for anyone interested in technology to find out more about Amateur Radio. Amateur radio operators are a valuable asset to the community during times of disaster and other times of communication outages. During the past year, ham radio has been used during the recent hurricanes and flooding events, providing reliable communications when other modes were not available. Amateur radio is seen to have a vital role in our Homeland Security. In July the ARRL, the national association of amateur radio, was given a $181,900 grant from the US Department of Homeland Security to train Amateur Operators in emergency communications. eHam Forums / Mods And Repairs / Kenwood D700A Remote head mount?
|
on: November 25, 2002, 10:31:28 AM

I hope one of you out there in cyberland can help me out.
I need to get a new mobile rig, and soon! I was anxiously awaiting the release of the ICOM 2720H and the Yaesu FT-8900. However, Yaesu has some serious issues with their software developer as well as piss-poor repeair services, so... I don't think I want to go after another Yaesu. The Icom...well, they forgot the Alpha-tags.
So, I am stuck between two radios:
The Kenwood TM-D700A or the Tm-G7A (Cool blue display).
The D700 actually gives me all the features that I want, and I do have a GPS unit...so, I would be all set for APRS.
The V7A, well... I don't get it... the recieve range is not as wide as the D700 or entry level TM-G707, and I do like to listen to the local cops on 477 MHz. I could forgo listening to the cops and use a scanner for that, but the "cool Blue" and unreadable display concerns me.
So, what's my problem with the D700? Well, most people would love the remote head... but, not me... I have my FT-8500 mounted with velcro on top of a scanner located on the transmission hump and all of my wires are sized accordingly. To put the radio somewhere else, would require a complete rewire of power, coax, and speaker wire. Has anyone devised a way of mounting the remote head with the actually body of the radio?
Any ideas?

I had one of these for two years. For the price, you can't get a better radio! It was easy to use, worked great, is sturdy, and I loved it.
I did sell it to get a VX-7R, but that is like comparing a Chevy Caprice to a Rolls Royce. You can't go wrong with the VX-150 for a 2M rig!
I also had the ADMS software, and it made programming a bit easier if you are going to put a lot of frequencies in the memory.
I did buy the AA dry-cell case (OUCH), they got me for over $40 for that case!
