eHam Forums / VHF / UHF / RE: Inexpensive HT radio with 1.25 mtr. band
|
on: February 28, 2012, 12:46:43 AM

Hello, Does any Chinese manufacturer other then Wouxun make a 1.25 meter HT? I checked Baofeng, Puxing and Feidaxin, but these manufactures make only 2 meter single band and 2 meter 70 centermeter dual band HTs. I have a Wouxan dual band 2 meter 70 centermeter radio and would like to purchase an inexpensive (cheep) HT in the 1.25 meter band. I know I could purchase the Wouxun with this band and the 70 centermeter band, but I would rather get just the one band I need and pay less. (yes I am cheep) and hate to duplicate things I already have.
Thanks for any information you might have.

You may want to look for a Radio Shack HTX 404. They are built like bricks, and you can sometimes find them at very reasonable prices.

Question: Whats to stop this guy from getting his wife a license or his kids or something and start back up using their call sign? Since it's not a station license but an operator license won't he just change the operator and inject his own voice in as third party traffic for commentary?
97.115(b)(2) Sweet LOL! And what about if he just goes up to Canada, and starts playing like that crazy dude on 14.313?

Ok, yea Im operating 2m only and the antenna is only 5 or 6 feet from my desk. Would an attic antenna be a better choice? I can't really put one outside right now.
Wouldn't hurt to be on the safe side and put it in the attic if you can, and it might even work better! Otherwise, I would just try to relocate the indoor antenna a greater distance away from your desk.

Why is there 100 views and only 1 reply per post. Thanks to those who answer, I learn alot.
Just like on the bands, some people are microphone shy.

As I understand it he acts as his own attorney. I heard a rumor several years ago that not only is he a Professional Engineer but that he also has a law degree. He'll probably drop dead before the authorities collect their $10K.
Yep. If he has a law degree, he will probably be able to hide all his assets anyway. And if they finally do nail him, he will most likely set up a station on a boat somewhere outside of US jurisdiction! A guy like him sounds like he is determined to keep on transmitting no matter what it may take.

eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / RE: 146.52MHz while mobile?

As a relatively "young ham", and one who doesn't have a whole lot of foldin' money to spend on the hobby, most of my on-the-air time is while mobile. I have a couple HT's, and I actually just bought a mobile 2m rig from another member here and am excited to get that set up. I haven't ever actually heard anybody on 70cm. While driving I always monitor 146.52, or at least keep it in scan rotation with the local repeaters. I call CQ every now and then, and have gotten a couple contacts that way. I always call out to other ham's when I see someone with Amateur Radio plates, but have yet to get any response that way. While I realize ham isn't like CB, it'd be a lot of fun to make close contacts that way. Does anyone else do this or am I just crazy? I am working on getting a website together to promote this practice, I'm not going to spam that here (especially considering it's not built yet), but maybe some word can get out and it might make for a fun way younger hams with limited equipment could make more contacts while out and about. Speaking of which, does anyone else have anything like this on their "mobile shack"? http://tinyurl.com/6p2wxrw For some reason, activity on 146.52 has been picking up a great deal lately, at least in the New York City suburbs and Southern Connecticut areas. I have heard quite a few hams using 146.52 from their mobiles on and around Interstate I-95.

That twits license has been said to have been revoked at the end of January 2012. No doubt if that's the case, the FCC and the federal marshalls will be doing something soon.
Trolling, trolling, here we go again. K1MAN's FCC ALJ Renewal Hearing is moving along at a snail's pace. He's appealed the 10K award from Maine District Court to the Court of Appeals. By summertime, he should receive a denial of his appeal, at which time he'll have to pay up or something he owns worth much more than 10K will be seized (like his house or invested assets). In response to a negative on his appeal, chances are, the ALJ will then decide against his renewal. He can appeal that to the DC Court of Appeals, which he will. And, after that dismissal/denial, that will be it. I doubt that a temporary stay would be granted to allow him to hold his expired license in pending status if he tries to go on to the Supreme Court. As a guess, and nothing more, by the end of the year, he'll be operating without a license (to begin a second round of games). Not necessarily. If he appeals to the Supreme Court, he may be able to delay things for years! Where is he getting all this money to pay his attorneys for these continuing appeals?

It never bothered me if a ham misspelled words. Now when they mess up on the Q codes, that's another story altogether!!

I don't think Ham's will a problem, when he find out we work for free. Free?? This equipment cost me a small fortune! It is actually costing us money to work for them!! I have to disagree with the "working for them" statement. Those who "volunteer" do so as an obligation and committed duty to assisting their country and community in time of need in what ever big ,or small situation arises. If it were "work" you'd be compensated by way of salary. Let's not forget that Ham's represent and are an "Ambassador of Good Will" community ready and willing to volunteer our time and radio gear for any situation. That's what it's all about and we should be proud that we are skilled and knowledgeable enough to make a difference for everybody. We can do it better than anybody! 73! Good point. We do it all for free, and just for the satisfaction of helping others in need. Just a simple thank you is enough for us, and even if we don't get that, we are still out there ready to jump in the very next time the need arises.
