16  eHam Forums / Antenna Restrictions / RE: Brewster/Southeast NY area, anyone out there? on: March 08, 2013, 05:42:50 PM
Check:  www.City-Data.com  for a list of hams who live in the town or area, then contact them by mail or phone!  I'm sure that most would be happy to give you the low down.
17  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / RE: handheld range on: March 06, 2013, 11:28:29 PM
If you want maximum range when using a handheld, just bring along a portable beam antenna!  The increase in range can be substantial.
18  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: FCC cleaning up 14.313? on: March 06, 2013, 11:23:38 PM
That article was better than Saturday Night Live,do you really think the FCC is going to collect a $10,000.00 fine from this guy? At best maybe confiscate a few thousand dollars of radio gear to be sold off at government auction for .20 cents on the dollar not to mention keeping him and hundreds of other non ID and unlicensed station operators off the bands in the future.I also doubt that jail time is in the equation since the government is giving out [get out of jail cards free] to illegal immigrants and people who were caught behind the wheel witout a drivers license.I have to admit it makes for great press.
The FCC has been trying to clean up the jamming and profanity on many Los Angeles area repeaters for nearly 20 years!  They haven't made a dent.  Operators there even have the gall to stream those repeaters live over the internet on the  www.RadioReference.com  website!
19  eHam Forums / Antenna Restrictions / RE: Remote operation option? on: March 03, 2013, 08:17:00 PM
How about remote 2 Meter/440 operation?
20  eHam Forums / Station Building / RE: Back up HF on: February 25, 2013, 11:34:53 PM
I agree, a good antenna is of major importance.  As far as the rigs go I have owned both, and the 718 is the superior of the two.
21  eHam Forums / QRP / RE: My ex-XYL bought me an HW-7 on: February 17, 2013, 09:20:28 PM
If you REALLY want that answer, I'd be more than happy to tell you the story.
Did you guys break up because of your ham radio hobby?
22  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Shure 444D on: February 16, 2013, 02:08:51 PM
Could you swap the mic element out and put it into a hand held?
23  eHam Forums / Satellites / RE: So where does the satellite hobby stand now? on: February 12, 2013, 05:15:58 PM
Too bad Bill Gates or one of the other Silicon Valley superstars wasn't a ham. Maybe we could get them to put up a few ham satellites in stationary orbit, that we could use all the time!  Smiley
24  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: Amateur Radio Ops eat Velveeta?! on: February 12, 2013, 05:08:32 PM
Well, this amateur keeps a CB rig alive in the shack, I'd bet that many knowledgeable Amateurs do as well.

A CB set to monitor one of the usual CB "skip" channels, left on all the time, with the Squelch engaged, is one of the best "10 meters is likely open" alerts there can be.

Yep, been doing that for years!  Works every time.
25  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: New to ten meters on: February 10, 2013, 10:35:10 PM
There is local 10 Meter ground wave activity in some parts of the country.  If you use a vertical like the A-99, you could reach stations up to around 50 miles away if they have a similar antenna.  CBers on 11 Meters  do it often with just 5 watts on AM or SSB.

There isn't any ground wave on 10 meters. Wink

If CBers are working each other over 50-mile paths with 5W and an omnidirectional vertical on each end, that must be a very "flat" terrain place (Florida?).  It ain't happening here.
Well I certainly don't think that those 50 mile contacts on 10 Meters are "skip"!  Yes, terrain absolutely does have a great deal to do with it.  As a CBer back in the day on Long Island NY (which is basically flat), I would often on quiet evenings make contacts with other stations 50 miles away on AM, and even longer distances with SSB.  I was using a basic 5 watt CB unit with a half wave vertical, reaching many other stations at that distance who were using similar radios and antennas.
26  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: First HF contact! on: February 10, 2013, 09:23:17 PM
Nothing like that first contact!  Keep at it, call CQ often, and listen!  Those contacts will add up fast.
27  eHam Forums / Repeaters / RE: Repeater Coverage in Western Canada - Alaska on: February 07, 2013, 03:19:07 PM
You might want to take along a portable 2M/440 beam.  It could come in handy from areas that are far from repeaters.

29  eHam Forums / Antenna Restrictions / RE: Antenna window bracket options? on: February 07, 2013, 02:43:44 PM
I travel a lot and often try to operate from inside hotel rooms.  I found that I can use a small portable ELK 2/M 440 beam antenna indoors with just 5 watts, and can hit repeaters over 50 miles away!
30  eHam Forums / Antenna Restrictions / RE: indoor antenna on: February 02, 2013, 01:01:33 AM
If you want to try 2M/440, pick up one of those small Elk beam antennas.  It's amazing what they can do, even from the inside of a building at ground level.
