eHam Forums / Antenna Restrictions / "Sprinkler Stealth Antenna"?

OK... here's a new twist on beating that dreaded HOA and CC&R gestapo! How about a homebrew vertical that doubles as a sprinkler and can be put out in the yard and taken in whenever the airwaves need "watering"? It's basically a garden hose running to a base which supports a vertical rod. The vertical consists of a hollow metal tube with holes in it at various points, which squirt out water in diferent directions along its length. The "base" of the sprinkler is a round sort of thingy (sort of like a Christmas tree base) with a bunch of metal rods coming out a various points and lengths (radials) to support the vertical part of the "sprinkler". What's funny is that it makes a pretty darn good sprinkler to boot!

The thing about boatanchors is that they bring you back in time. Unlike rice boxes which are difficult to work on, boatanchors can be opened up, repaired and modified by hams who have the skills. There is also something magic about a big metal radio that has glowing tubes and smells like heated dust! It's nice to sit at home behind one of those in the middle of the night in a blizzard, with the rig helping to warm up the room. It's something that one really can't understand untill you experience it.

Set up a multitude of resonant dipoles for all frequencies in many directions. You can erect slopers or inverted V dipoles to reduce your tower's height requirements.

You can get sued and even thrown out of your community. The good thing is that they have to let you put up a TV antenna or satellite dish, so you can easily disguise your ham antenna as one of those. Also, you can hide antennas in trees, bushes, flagpoles, lamposts and the like. They even make ham antenna that look like vent pipes that you can install on your roof!

Sure! Experiment all you like with various wire radials attached to the bottom of the antenna. You may be surprised at how well it could perform on various frequencies!

There are a lot of companies now making artificial trees for cell phone antennas that can be found on the net. Some of the trees are so real looking, that it hard to even tell that they are man made! They are a bit on the pricy side however.
