46  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: which band would you recommend. on: January 20, 2013, 10:30:16 PM
Just look for a used HTX-100 for around $100 or so.  You can always sell it for about what you paid when you eventually upgrade to the General!
47  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Swiss Dipole vs. CB Vertical on: January 20, 2013, 09:18:14 PM
If you look at the reviews for the swiss dipole here on eham you will see it is not rated very well! I have the Solarcon  A99 and I can tell you it works great on 10m mine is only 13ft in the air and have worked alot of europe and even new zeland  with it @ only 25w, with a tuner 12,15 and 20m should work good also
I agree.  For around $50 the A-99 does a very good job, and I have had similar results with one mounted at ground level.  The IMAX 2000 antenna is also a very good performer.
48  eHam Forums / VHF / UHF / VHF FM Contest This Weekend!! on: January 19, 2013, 11:48:44 AM
Just a note to remind everyone that the ARRL VHF FM contest is on THIS weekend.  Get out there and call "CQ contest", and try to rack up some new contacts and friends!  Anything that we can do to increase activity on VHF FM, and maybe even make a bunch of new rag chew ham buddies in our area, is a good thing!

Didn't the NAZIs supposedly build some kind of "bell" machine that could transport them into the past or future?  I just hope that one day I don't find some bell in my backyard and a guy with a mustache knocking on my door!

You read that on the internet, didn't you!  Grin   Shocked
Nope!  I heard it from a WW2 vet!  He probably read it on the internet.

51  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: inexpensive 10 meter rig on: January 11, 2013, 08:41:13 PM
I do appreciate all the comments on this topic and it has given me much to ponder.  I may still be wrong, but I still think there would be a decent market for a "Big 3" single band 10 meter ssb that could put out 50 to 70 watts and would cost somewhere between 150-200 dollars.(That's what a new 2m rig would cost you.)  For new techs who have already spent that amount on a 2 meter rig and are itching to start Dxing, I think it would be the next logical step up the ladder.

So I think I will search til I find the "perfect" Htx-10 or 100.  They have had good comments and reviews and would be within my budget.

If you had one of these Htx's and wanted to dx with it, what type of homebrewed antenna would you build that is decent for the beginner and affordable?  I built a copper J-pole for 2 meter and really like it and it works great.

Thanks for all your responses,
Eric

For the price that you can now get them, the HTX-100 is a darn good little radio.  I own one that I have used for years with zero issues.  I logged loads of contacts with just a 10 Meter dipole, or my low cost A-99 antenna trimmed for 10 meters!  Plenty of new hams use them, so when it comes time to move up you should be able to sell it for close to what you paid.
52  eHam Forums / Antenna Restrictions / RE: Hidden antenna options ? on: January 11, 2013, 08:21:54 PM
WB2RCB, great antenna setup for a condo!  Your web page was a wonderful half century time machine into the past.
53  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: Will There Be More Peaks in Cycle 24? on: January 09, 2013, 12:43:53 PM
Warm weather is nice, but there is just something about firing up that old rig on a cold winter's night in the middle of a blizzard!  It was even better years ago, when you had the heat from all those glowing tubes to keep you warm.

I keep 2 go-bags, one for the home and the other for the vehicle!
55  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: Hams using the 11 meter band with ham equipment ! on: December 31, 2012, 11:16:13 PM
Hi
What makes you think that are licensed hams?
Why would they want to be on the 11 meter band?
Makes no sense...
JohnB

I know several HAMS local to me that use their HAM equipment on 11m, and they ARE HAMS, I don't have to think they are HAMS, I KNOW THEY ARE HAMS. And a few of them have slipped on occasion, blurting out their HAM callsigns by accident. Why they talk on 11m? I don't know the answer to that one. It doesn't have to make sense. And it has been happening for a long time, not just recently.

11 Meters is just another frequency.  It was once a ham band until the FCC took it away from hams to start Citizens Band.  No reason that hams (or anyone else) could not still use it for local communications.
56  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Power supplies?? Looking for a budget minded choice. Any Ideas?? on: December 29, 2012, 07:13:57 PM
I've had great luck with the small Jetstream JTPS 31MB switching power supply.  Relatively inexpensive ($79) and quite small, and works well with a 100 Watt HF or 2m 440 rig with no noise issues.  Check out the eham reviews.
57  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: Why do some hams mimic the accents of their DX targets? on: December 27, 2012, 12:26:35 AM
I once heard that some hams do it intentionally, because they believe it makes it easier for the foreign station to understand them!
58  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / RE: What are your top low cost HF + 6m xcvrs on the market? on: December 23, 2012, 10:46:22 PM
Yaesu FT-857, Icom IC-706

Good luck, and remember that we are only as far as your nearest WiFi spot!
60  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: 2 meter/ 70 cm antenna: indoor vs outdoor. on: December 16, 2012, 11:09:34 PM
For 2 Meters or 440, you can easily home brew antennas yourself!  Check online for simple ground plane designs, and mount them on a mast or a 2x2 outside.
