1  eHam Forums / Mods And Repairs / RE: Wouxun KGUV6D V2 HT Flashlight LED Voltage? on: Yesterday at 05:18:47 AM
That's the problem. I don't know any of the ratings as the owners manual has no schematic for me to look at and I am not aware of any schematics or service manuals available for this radio. This is  one drawback of the Chinese rigs. Tech info is unobtanium.
You just have to look harder. Here's a link to the service manual. Just searched for it on Google.

2  eHam Forums / HomeBrew / RE: 11m Tuner for 2m Antenna on: May 12, 2013, 12:11:53 PM

Trying to feed a single antenna from the two different radios is a recipe for disaster in and of itself.  One mistake can take out the finals on either or both radios and then what do you have?

The single antenna notion here is a very bad idea.

You've been told.

Twice.

And now three times. There's a reason you can't just stick a repeater on the air for a hundred dollars. You need ridiculous amounts of ridiculously expensive separation between input and output, and you would need that kind of separation between the CB and the 2 meter radios. With the kind of range you would get operating CB with the 2M antenna, you'd probably be better off just standing outside and yelling at who you are trying to communicate with.

Use the 2M antenna you're looking at, and get a magmount 11M antenna. It would cost almost nothing, it would be a temporary installation, and you could mount it on ANYTHING metal that is nearby if putting it on the trailer is a problem. But considering how small a magnet it would take, the extra space would be negligible. Plus everything would be tuned up and efficient. Remember, that CB is only a few watts to begin with.
3  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: New and confused about antennas on: April 22, 2013, 03:23:05 PM
I used to use an Outbacker Perth Plus vertical mounted on the tripod they sell. The tripod sits on the ground and is coupled to it. The antenna is good from 80M up through at least 2 meters, maybe even 440 (I don't remember). You do have to go out and move the jumper wire to switch between bands, but I found that just slightly inconvenient - definitely worth it if that's your best option. Some people like them, some don't, but personally I had really good luck with it. I worked most of Europe, Alaska, Hawaii, Japan, and many states with it from Ohio just running 100W. I paid probably around $300 for all of it, but I didn't have anywhere to hang wires or put anything "proper" up. Just food for thought.

4  eHam Forums / Repeaters / RE: repeater directory for kindle on: April 21, 2013, 07:03:05 PM
The only problem with online directories is that some people don't always have internet access while operating. Field Day would be a good example of this.
5  eHam Forums / SWL (Shortwave Listening) / RE: Eham.net Movie Review: The Numbers Station on: April 15, 2013, 08:33:12 PM
I can see this movie getting low ratings simply due to most people never having heard of a numbers station. As both a ham and a longtime SWL, I think the plot at least seems interesting. It may not be the best movie I've ever seen, but it might be worth watching.

6  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: Zero to Extra Class in 3 Weeks. Confession of a Dick Bash Ham on: April 12, 2013, 04:17:37 AM
But the main point I am making is that if you lower the bar required to hurdle over in order to become a surgeon, you will end up with more surgeons and more poor ones.

Unfortunately, people act like amateur radio IS some kind of surgery, or some job working with nuclear materials. It's not, it's only about talking, and having a proper station. That's all. Unfortunately no kind of testing is a filter for keeping riff raff out. Technical ability and personality traits are two different things. Speaking of surgeons, think of how many you have heard of who have butchered people up, or are known to be drug addicts since they have access to medicine - look at how much testing and training THEY went through.
7  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: Bottom end of 10 Meters? on: April 04, 2013, 07:19:56 PM
I've heard them at the bottom of 10M back to at least 10 years ago, on and off. I just figured they were Mexicans who were using 10M as CB.
8  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Speaker for hf use on: April 04, 2013, 06:48:53 PM
By now you've probably already bought something, but I was going to suggest looking around yard sales. I'm sure you could find something REALLY cheap there. Like everyone said, though, just about anything will do. I'd get something from an old stereo if I had a choice.

You've already got tons of good advice. I just wanted to add that you are always going to end up offending SOMEBODY, so try not to worry about it. Have fun!  Smiley

10  eHam Forums / Licensing / RE: Vanity Call sign renewal. on: March 22, 2013, 09:12:18 PM
Whoever is charging you each year for renewal, it is NOT the FCC. I have a vanity call. It's good for 10 years, and I just recently renewed it for $15. It expires in 2022.
11  eHam Forums / Licensing / RE: KC4TBZ. Where is this station? on: March 20, 2013, 10:41:13 AM
Thanks for the replies.
Dang it. I could have sworn I was hearing tango-baker-zulu.
While I could have misheard his call sign I heard nothing about a 10-10 club either.

Judging from a Google search of the call, someone is DEFINITELY actively using KC4TBZ, as recently as this year. But it hasn't been a valid call since 1993 when the original holder changed his call.

Editing to add this link: http://dxfor.me/?_s=KC4TBZ. It suggests someone is using it from Kentucky, 10 meters only, and DX only (or mainly). It would be interesting if someone could track them down, because this person is definitely bootlegging the call.
12  eHam Forums / Youth / RE: Youngest ham? on: March 20, 2013, 08:20:07 AM
I'm a VE, and I remember a young girl around 9'ish or so who came to a test session at our hamfest. What was curious was that she had passed the code element, but was having trouble with the written (element 2). I would have personally thought it would be the other way 'round.

Head for Alan's site and do the job properly.

Tanakasan

Definitely read that page. What you are planning to do is simply a fire waiting to happen. It's a bad idea to even run a rig barefoot through the cigarette lighter plug, let alone an amp.
14  eHam Forums / Site Talk / RE: Hissssssss... database glitching? on: March 12, 2013, 04:09:42 AM
The site was Duathlon this morning when I checked it just now (7am eastern). I'm using Windows 7 with Chrome browser, Time Warner cable internet. I was already logged in, just went to the site for the first time this morning using my normal bookmark, and it looked just like it did yesterday - which was all messed up. I refreshed and it was normal eHam without any pictures at all loading, and then I refreshed a second time and everything was normal.
15  eHam Forums / Site Talk / RE: Hissssssss... database glitching? on: March 11, 2013, 04:03:22 PM
7:02 PM eastern time here, just got the snake site, then the other one. On the third load I got eHam back, so the problem is still there as of right now.
