1  eHam Forums / Elmers / Anyone know AT-300 interface connector p/n? on: May 17, 2013, 07:28:44 PM
I am looking for the generic part mfr & part number for the connector that plugs into the back of most Kenwood transceivers for AT-300 auto antenna tuner.  It is a six pin, Molex like connector.
2  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: Hacking an Atomic Clock on: April 19, 2013, 03:38:37 PM
Groupon goods right now is offering an atomic clock that they say can display GMT.  I just ordered two for my shack.

20 bucks.  As I write this there is about 30 hours left on this deal.

How about some details to go with your post?
4  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Coax road crossing on: April 08, 2013, 01:16:29 AM
A long time ago I saw a public utility push a steel pipe under a road.  It involved digging a long ditch perpendicular to the road and using a special kind of jack to push sections of pipe under the road.  As the section of pipe was driven another section was threaded on and so forth.

I'm sure the process was not cheap but it was a lot cheaper than tearing up the road.  So, the question is: how much are you willing to pay to bury that coax?

PS. Why 2 inch pipe? RG213 is under 1/2 inch and rotator cable is less.

Put the rig in a box together with an ozone generator.

Tanakasan

With all due respect to TANAKASAN, ozone is a highly corrosive gas.  It would damage to the radio.
6  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: Which 12 VDC Heavy Duty Battery To Buy? on: March 22, 2013, 05:10:57 PM
There are three basic lead-acid battery types.  Liquid electrolyte, gelled electrolyte and absorbed glass mat.  LA, Gel and AGM.

Liquid acid is the most common, oldest and can take the most abuse.

GELs and AGMs are sealed, valve regulated batteries meaning that they do not vent any gasses unless they are abused by overcharging.  Supposedly they can be discharged further than LA.  They are more expensive and are claimed to last longer than LA.

I was a long time live aboard sailor. Among the sailing community many had disappointing results with GELs and AGMs.  I always went with LA and usually got 5-6 years out of a set.  That said, if you are planning to use this battery inside your home I suggest that you check with your insurance company or your building codes.

If you get a LA battery get a marine battery box to go with it.  They are not expensive and have liquid tight bottoms in case of spills.  The most common deep cyccle batteries come by physical size.  Group 24 is the smallest, group 27 is next,  after those two sizes they get very large - too large to lift without help.  I suggest a LA group 27 deep cycle as the best alternative.  BUT be sure to be safe with it.  There is a lot of power, even in a "dead" battery if it is shorted.  Charging a LA causes hydrogen gas to be vented and hydrogen can explode if concentrated and triggered by a spark.  Charging AGMs and GELs require chargers specifically designed to prevent overcharging (and venting).

7  eHam Forums / Misc / Am I a LID if I... on: March 22, 2013, 12:31:31 PM
don't know what a LID is?

I have been licensed for thirty years but have not been very active.

I have seen the term many times.

So, just what is a LID?
8  eHam Forums / Antenna Restrictions / RE: Remote operation option? on: March 12, 2013, 03:02:47 PM
Pretty sure that operating a remote station for profit is a direct violation of the regs.

KG4KGW WOW, you are wise beyond your years.  That is one of the best posts I have read on eHam.  73, Brian K8BMW
10  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Ham license to buy? on: January 12, 2013, 06:03:45 PM
Considering the malicious interference I hear on the air from, presumably non-hams, I think it is a fair question to ask anyone buying a transmitter.

Years age there was an active movement among Ham equipment dealers not to sell to unlicensed individuals.  I have not purchased a new radio for some time so I don't know if they still do that.  It is also a good practice for dealers to verify the address of a buyer to stop fraud.

I often see that same requirement listed by Ebay sellers.

11  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / RE: I need help with program control of Kenwood TS-870. on: January 12, 2013, 05:12:45 PM
Problem solved, well worked around.

I still don't understand why the AI command does not seem to work.  I changed the program to repeatedly (four times a second) send the IF command and react to the response.

I would still like to know why the AI command isn't working right.  Has anyone written a control program for a Kenwood using the AI instruction?
12  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / RE: I need help with program control of Kenwood TS-870. on: January 07, 2013, 04:57:28 PM
There are four possibilities with AI - 0 to 3.

0) Off.

1) IF command answers it's output command periodically.

2) For parameter changes the corresponding answer command is sent.

3) Both one and two.

I have tried all three possibilities and have not seen a response when spinning the dial or changing bands.  I only get an initial response to the AI after sending an IF command.  At any time I need to put in two commands to get two responses.  Sending one command I get no response.  Sending it again I get two responses.

13  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / I need help with program control of Kenwood TS-870. on: January 06, 2013, 11:59:44 PM
I am trying to write a program for an Arduino to auto band switch my Ten Tec Hercules II by reading the frequency from the Kenwood TS-870.  It appears that the responses to commands sent to the TS-870 are buffered and not output until a second command it sent.  Then it outputs the results from both commands.

Examples:

1) I send the "AI3;" command and nothing happens.  I then send an "IF;" command and get back two responses.

2) I send the "IF;" command repeatedly, first send - no response, second send - two responses, third send no response, etc.

My understanding of how this should work is that after sending the "AI3;" command I should just be able to listen for responses anytime something changes in the TS-870. That is what I wrote the program to do.  I could rewrite the program to send the "IF;" command, and if no response send it again.  The program would be actively polling the TS-870 rather than listening - a lot more activity on the TS-870 that may affect other functions.

I found some very old references on an internet discussion board describing this problem slightly differently.  No resolution was posted.  This appears to be unique to the TS-870.

Has anyone here seen this and found a solution?

Wow W6UV this seems this is quite a hot button for you.

As has been posted in discussions here before, the government has stepped into private contracts for other reasons such as discrimination.   If you signed into a CC&R that banned Blacks, Jews or Muslims would you make the same argument?

Banning hams from a community could be called discrimination.  Banning all transmitters could be called just plain stupid.  I would like to see what happened if an HOA tried to stop garage door openers and cellphones.

Maybe another homeowner in the community could sue me, maybe not.  Contracts are between two entities, one non existent and one being me.  I did not enter into a contract with an individual homeowner.

It is great that your home is not under any CC&Rs.  Congratulations.  Is your home in a city?  Is it in a development?  What about all the people who have limited choices?  You have what you want so damn the rest?

15  eHam Forums / Antenna Restrictions / RE: FCC Petition to Void antenna restrictions has 4150 signature with 3 days left on: October 12, 2012, 12:36:28 PM
I live in an HOA restricted home.  Just bought 1-1/2 years ago.  I did read and understood the CC & Rs.  I love the home and am very happy here.

Some of the rules make a lot of sense.  A block away, in a much older neighborhood there is a home with five cars and trailers parked in the front yard that have not moved for years - a veritable junkyard.  There is a house with a partially collapsed barn behind it - the city does nothing to get this eyesore torn down even though it is a safety hazard for kids in the neighborhood.  I am glad that if push came to shove, my neighborhood has a tool to prevent these things form happening.

The home owners association here is dead - has been for years.  So there is no enforcement at present.  Our CC & Rs are not as restrictive as others.  We cannot have an antenna more than 10 feet above our roof line.   Many of the CC & Rs are boilerplate.  Go to a lawyer to develop some land for homes and they pull out some verbage that they picked up from who knows where and it becomes the CC & Rs without further thought.  The people that did the development are long gone.  The rules are still there.

I am in violation of the CC & Rs.  I have a dipole up about 60 ft strung between two trees.  It is hardly visible.  The ladder line is the visible part. My next door neighbor grew up next to a ham and they were good friends - he does not mind the antenna.  Another neighbor was visiting and asked what that thing was.  I told her it was a short wave antenna.  She asked if I talked too.  I said yes and she started talking about her dad, his CB and how much fun he had doing it.  She does not mind.  Will I put up a tower? Probably not.  I may put up a vertical in the back yard where few people will see it.

I am rambling on.

My point is that I feel for those people who live with CC & Rs that prohibit all antennas.  The rules were put into place by some lawyer just because of some verbage that has been replicated blindly for years.  The uninformed just keep enforcing the rules blindly.  Getting the rules changed is nearly impossible.  Those hams need some relief.  Some reasonable restrictions on CC & Rs are needed.  Want to buy a home built in the last 25 years?  You will be stuck with CC & Rs.  We need something to prevent this situation.

Yes, it is a contractual agreement but it is one drawn up by people that are long gone from the scene.  There has to be some accommodation.
