31  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / Airlink Express on: April 29, 2012, 09:23:43 AM
Anyone using the latest version of Airlink Express (2.4.6.676) having a problem with the green RX arrow wondering around the waterfall even when it's is locked? I don't know if it is a bug in the software or if I have missed a setting somewhere. It is my favorite software to use for PSK31 but lately it has been difficult to have a conversation due to the rx wondering off to other qso's on the waterfall. I don't recall it doing that on previous versions.

32  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: David Clark Head set on: April 07, 2012, 06:52:58 PM
I would just sell the DC headset and get a Heil for ham use. I have David Clark headsets that I use when I fly and man those things are not comfortable for extended use. They just squeeze on my head and end up giving me a headache. I couldn't imagine trying to use those things in the hamshack. They are tight because they are designed to cancel out as much outside noise as possible in an aviation environment which can be really noisy. As was said earlier, these are made for a specific use and that's what they work best for. You could probably get enough money out of them to go a pretty fair distance towards a Heil headset for amateur use. I have had several Heil sets over the years and they work great and all have been very comfortable for extended use.
33  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: FT-950 audio record setup into PC/HRD on: March 28, 2012, 06:28:04 PM
The Tigertronics Signalink usb works great for this. I have an FT-950 and signalink usb and have done exactly what your wanting to do very easily. I kinda discovered being able to use it for audio recording by accident. I use Audacity to record the audio. It will allow you to adjust the levels and it works really well. Just make sure you get your sound card settings right and you'll be good to go. Trust me, its much much easier with the interface. I have tried it without the box and its a pain in the butt to say the least.

34  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: MFJ auto tuners on: February 23, 2012, 07:56:27 PM
I know MFJ has some QC issues with a lot of things but their line of auto tuners are pretty good. I have an MFJ-929 200 watt auto tuner and it works fabulous with my FT-950 and tunes just about anything I can put behind it. No QC issues with it whatsoever. I also like the digital readout it has. It is easy to use and you can get the interface cable for just about any modern rig. I highly recommend it.

That was in the past. Right now I'm waiting for an order that I placed near Christmas time! It really isn't their fault because its a distribution problem from Yaesu! I ordered an FT-817ND and when I ordered it it was in stock but while on the phone with the sales rep, it was sold to another customer. I guess it was the last one they had. They told me they expect another shipment in less than a week. Guess what, Wrong!

Their was a microphone cable that I was needing a couple of years ago and I was working with several ham dealers trying to get the cable. I got the run around for about 2 months and finally gave up and went through Gigaparts. They didn't have it in stock either but I have to give them credit. They got on the ball and did whatever it was they had to do and I had my cable within 1 week. I cant really fault any of the other dealers too much because I believe it was mostly an issue with the cable manufacture not supplying the dealers in a timely manor but Gigaparts took care of it pretty fast.

I understand your frustration, especially as long as you have been waiting but in my experience if Yaesu's customer service is any reflection on the company as a whole then it don't surprise me that they are having problems filling the orders. I love their radios but their customer service lacks a lot to be desired. I guess the earthquake in Japan could have slowed them down too. I don't know how badly Yaesu was affected from the disaster. Hope you get your rig soon.
36  eHam Forums / VHF / UHF / RE: Wouxun for 220? on: February 04, 2012, 10:39:40 AM
I have the Wouxun KG-UV2D and absolutely love it. It is a fantastic radio for the price. It is unfortunate for those that had problems with them or got one that didn't work right out of the box but tell me of a manufacturer that don't have a lemon come through the line every now and then? You wont find one. I have owned a little of almost all the major brands over the years and I have had my share of problems with each of them but more good than bad.

I don't think you will go wrong with a Wouxun.

Speaking of repeaters...

1. You will be ON CALL like it or not 24/7/4/52/365. It doesn't matter that you are in bed at 3AM. Someone WILL call.

2. If anything at all sounds wrong to the user, the repeater is at fault. Doesn't matter that he is using a 20 year old radio, or a blown speaker, it is STILL the repeater's fault.

3. If someone can't hit the repeater, it is the repeater's fault. Doesn't matter if the are 100 miles away in a metal building and using one of those Alinco credit card HT's, it STILL the repeater's fault.

4. If someone can't get into the repeater because it is toned, it doesn't matter if that is done to keep interference out, it is because you are trying to block them from using the repeater.

5. When it comes time to clean up the tower site, EVERYONE will have something else to do.

6. When the repeater is down for repairs, you should immediately drop everything else you are doing (including any deaths, births, vacations, etc) and GET THE REPEATER FIXED.

7. When an expensive part is needed for repairs, you will always hear "Well, I paid my $20 this year, that ought to be enough." (And that repeater cost $5000...)

8. If something goes wrong and you loose your tower site, you are the one that caused it.

9. If lightning hits the repeater, you are the one that caused it.

10. If wind tears down the antenna, you are the one that caused it.

11. Just remember, if it happened, you are the one that caused it.

12. And when the repeater is down, then you will start getting the phone calls that say "If I bring my radio over there, will you program simplex for me?" (That is because most of the repeater users are within simplex range of each other, and they also never remember where they put their radio manual.)

Ah, the life of a repeater owner / technician...

Couldn't have said it any better my self. Every point here is 100% accurate. It is amazing at the things you will hear from people when you are in charge of or own a repeater. Just be prepared and ready for it. Nothing ever happens to anyone else's radio. It's always the repeater. Never mind the fact they forgot to connect the coax their their rig. It's still you'rs and the repeaters fault.

Just like a boat owner, A repeater owners two best days are the day it is bought/put on the air, And then the day it is finally sold/junked!

Exactly.
39  eHam Forums / Repeaters / RE: Setting up and maintaining a repeater on: January 27, 2012, 12:09:49 PM
Not to sound negative or discouraging here but it can be a major pain in the back side. I started out with a club years ago and ended up being in charge of EVERYTHING repeater related and rarely could I find any help when I needed it. Eventually everybody else lost interest and I pretty much ended up being stuck with it so I just bought the repeater system out and took ownership. I ran it for several more years and finally got tired of the politics and the maintenance and got out of the business all together. I don't miss clubs or repeaters these days. Talk about a load of bricks off my shoulders. The repeater might sit there for days and not be used and the first time you turn off the transmitter to do some maintenance your phone starts ringing. Did you know the repeater was off the air? Kerchunkers at work.

Now that I am over my rant, In your situation I would definitely take the advice of others and get things set up right from the start. Certain people need to be designated a certain job and expected to make good on the position should they accept it. It can easily all fall in your lap if you are not careful. It's pretty easy to get yourself spread out way to thin in these situations leading to frustration and disgust but it can be done.

40  eHam Forums / Licensing / RE: What percentage of people in your town are hams? on: January 27, 2012, 11:54:09 AM
I have about 8 hams that live within a 1 mile radius of me. To the best of my knowledge only two of us are active. As for the rest of them? I have no idea what their up to. They are definitely not on the air. I know several people that got their ham license but seemingly lost all interest at the same time and as far as I know never even got a radio. I see one or two of them on a regular basis. Never any mention from them about ham radio.

Also I have a Pyramid 40 amp power supply

Awesome. Nothing wrong with that at all. Gives you plenty of room to expand. I always prefer to go overkill on my power supply and have the extra room.

Good luck getting your station up and running. Building it is half the fun  Smiley

I just need to factor in the cost of a roughly $6,500 stove that she wants as part of the deal.

Wow. That thing should prepare the food, deliver it to the table and clean up the mess as well as wash the dishes for that kind of money  Grin

I've also found that the Astron people are very helpful when it comes to working on one of their supplies.

That is one reason I will always have Astron Power Supplies in my shack. Good quality customer service from a company goes a long way.
44  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Astron RS-50M Suddenly developed loud vibrations. on: January 11, 2012, 02:08:15 PM
I have been rather busy lately but I finally had a chance to sit down and go back through the power supply again a little more slowly and thoroughly. Found that one of the Rectifier Diode's 1N1184A on the back of the supply was indeed open. Called Astron and explained the whole situation to them and they sent be 2 of them free of charge. I replaced the bad one and the supply is running smooth as ever. I also learned quiet a bit in the process. Thanks to everyone for all the suggestions, pointers, advice, and help. According to Astron the breaker tripping on on start up is just something that happens occasionally with larger power supplies with a big inrush. I'll just leave it on from now on. I used to leave my power supplies on all the time anyways and don't know why I ever started shutting them off. All is well.
45  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: question about headset's on: January 11, 2012, 01:36:58 PM
Well I would say everybody has their own situation and likes. What works well for one don't necessarily work well for others. As a Pilot myself I would have to pass on wearing a big heavy set of David Clark's in the ham shack. Their just too heavy, tight, and uncomfortable for that kind of use. I can only wear them for so long and I have to have relief from the darn things. It's like having your head in a vice. I even have to take them off in the plane from time to time just to stay comfortable. Their are some that are much lighter (= much more expensive) than the DC's but if I want to use a headset in the shack my Heil set works much better and is more light weight and comfortable. Another problem I have had is difficulty getting my vox setup to work well with a headset. And even more so, I like to have a soft drink or two while I'm on the air and that's kinda difficult to do with a headset on. I like my Heil boom mic setup just fine. I found it to be the perfect solution for me.
