16  eHam Forums / APRS / Tracker? on: January 28, 2009, 03:57:17 AM
You may operate your device as you described however I would discourage it as just to have a device on the air and contribute nothing else but watching your valued material item does nothing to further the investigation of amatuer radio. The FCC rule pertaining to packet stations are below. This rule shows how an APRS mobile station may operate in an automobile being driven by a non-ham with no ham within reach of the mobile station.

Sec. 97.221 Automatically controlled digital station
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(a) This rule section does not apply to an auxiliary station, a beacon station, a repeater station, an earth station, a space station, or a space telecommand station.

(b) A station may be automatically controlled while transmitting a RTTY or data emission on the 6 m or shorter wavelength bands, and on the 28.120-28.189 MHz, 24.925-24.930 MHz, 21.090-21.100 MHz, 18.105-18.110 MHz, 14.0950-14.0995 MHz, 14.1005-14.112 MHz, 10.140-10.150 MHz, 7.100-7.105 MHz, or 3.620-3.635 MHz segments.

(c) A station may be automatically controlled while transmitting a RTTY or data emission on any other frequency authorized for such emission types provided that:

(1) The station is responding to interrogation by a station under local or remote control; and

(2) No transmission from the automatically controlled station occupies a bandwidth of more than 500 Hz.

I must chime in here. I have known J.D for a few years and he is extremly knowledgable and will bet the radio is indeed not as advertised. I have never known J.D to stiff anyone it is absolutely out of his character.
I have bought numerous things in the same way and have in fact recieved items that were clearly misrepresentd and you have to live by the rule of at your own risk. But as for J.D I stake my good judgment on J.D'shonesyry. Incedently I have owned several FT-736R's and they have known failures and are subject to abuse as any radio. It's an old radio and problems have arisen with these models such as the internal power supply just for one.

18  eHam Forums / Licensing / I have an FCC FRN number.How do I get a callsign? on: October 31, 2008, 04:00:03 AM
Is this guy for real? He passes the GROL and is clueless of the Amatuer Radio requirements as if it's something new to him?
19  eHam Forums / APRS / Garmin Nuvi 350 - TM-D700A Cable on: August 21, 2008, 03:55:00 AM
The Nuvi 350 is not recognized as a serial device it is treated as a disk drive so interfacing the D700 or 710 is not possible.

20  eHam Forums / RFI / EMI / 55.86Hz Wonder on: August 20, 2008, 03:37:31 AM
This usally indicates, probably due to a lightning stike in the past, that an insulator on the high voltage side is cracked and moisture has encroached and when sunrise begins and sunset begins the ensuing heat causes expansion at the hairline fracture causing a corona effect at the site. Have seen this a couple of times.

21  eHam Forums / APRS / USB serial and the D700 on: March 29, 2008, 05:59:41 AM
I use a Dynex USB to serial and I have no problem at all using the Kenwood MCP program. You must install the USB drivers that come with the device or it will not run.

23  eHam Forums / APRS / help with aprs+sa on: February 20, 2008, 02:59:33 PM
This error is caused by not having your soundcard drivers properly registered in Windows. If it is a soundcard imbedded on your motherboard the drivers for the motherboard are where you will find them.

If it is a PCI or PCI-e addon card they are with the card you bought. Ths error is because when APRS+SA wants to generate audio either in closing or ulletin audio etc it has no device to output it to.

24  eHam Forums / APRS / Is the UIVIEW software being updated still? on: November 13, 2007, 03:32:21 AM
So why does anyone us UI-View with the obvious eventual death bestowed upon it. I remember when Roger, the developer, passed away and there was such a clamor elevating him to practically sainthood and yet he wanted the source code destroyed upon his death. Is that something I would do or many others would do? Probably not seems a bit self-centered of an act myself. Why not leave it open for his legacy to live on?
25  eHam Forums / FoxHunting / Can You Really Locate That Jammer? on: November 06, 2007, 03:20:47 AM
I am always amused when this subject comes up and the fact that the ARRL's bulletin schedule is always villified. The has been no bigger active champion for amatuer radio than the ARRL. Those that pay dues to be members also contribute to this same promotion of our hobby and to protect us from encroachment by corporate frequency raiders etc. Everyone knows the times of these bulletins and have over the years used them for what they are intended from time to time but yet we are so quick to villify them as if they are a renegade frequency hog and serve no useful purpose.

There are better targets to critize than biting the hand that has fed us so well for so long.

27  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / guy wires - more important, distance or angle? on: July 05, 2007, 03:44:29 AM
Guy should be set at 80% of tower span. This means that a 100 ft tower guys should be placed 80 feet from the tower base.

If you can't install tower following the recommended engineering plan byy the manufacturerer you have a liabilty issue if tower comes down and injures. Lawyers will ask you if you followed the recommended engineering plans and if you say no you will likey lose. If you are in the country probably not an issue but if you are in residential and tower can fall crossing proerty lines you better pay close attention to this.

29  eHam Forums / Emergency Communications / US Law Protects Weapons Carry during Emergencies on: May 11, 2007, 03:45:30 AM
Why in the hell would one need to pack a weapon when the real reason for being there is to offer your services to help those in need?

Carrying weapons at all opportunities is absurd. There is a time and place for everything.
30  eHam Forums / APRS / aprs program on: May 08, 2007, 03:26:52 AM
If you want fluid street level maps with the ability to zoom in on stations on the map or have the entire United States to look at and zoom down to the street level APRS+SA is the program to use it requires Street Atlas v 4 through 9. Street Atlas can be found if you look around I have it. It is by far the most superior for map level. It has many other good features as well. Obviously I run APRS+SA and UI-View and prefer APRS+SA when mapping is important to me such as ballon chasing with APRS on board. But UI-View stands at as well in certain times for me as well.

No more than they cost I would get both and use them as needed as I do. If you want to get Street Atlas 9.0 contact me by e-mail (good in callbook) and I will steer you to the source.
