"the ARRL antenna book for quick reference"

It's the first book i'm buying before my General study book.

:-)

Hope you guys aren't getting sick of me.

Question: with my 8+ foot wire elements what should I do with the very end?  Can knot the end of the wire into a dogbone or does the end have to be PERFECTLY straight?

You don't want junk for an antenna, but you don't have to spend a bundle to put up a decent antenna on 10m.  If you just want an OK starter antenna, you can easily build a dipole for under 25 dollars.  It'll only be about 16 1/2 feet long.  For a balun, just wind 3 or 4 turns (about 4 to 6 inches in diameter) of coax at the feedpoint, and it'll work OK.
"

Whats the math in dertirming the Balun?  and when you say feed point you mean just below where the elements connect to the coax right?

If you meant to use it as a horizontal dipole, then also that would work fine too. Again the strength of the feedpoint would have to support the antenna if it would be center mounted. If this was mounted 15 feet or up, it would have some directional component to it allowing you to peak some signals while nulling others.
"

Well I am thinking of a horizontal dipole.  Copper tubbing would remove the need of having to support wires.

"
However, now is not a good time of the sunspot cycle to be listening for the 10 meter DX beacons. Check back in a couple of years if you want to work DX on 10.
"

Oh i know the band is dead right now, my think is, I just want to be able to hear SOMETHING even a beacon would make me wet myself.

After I get my license on the 27th I'm prolly going to setup a sked with one of the local guys here in Salt Lake just so I can say I did it.

I've almost resigned myself to working VHF/UHF IRLP to get anyone far way.

But thats not really "working" someone.  Though I could prolly collect a few QSL's that way.

"Get a dipole or an A-99 up, and listen in the mid day and early evenings on the calling frequencies. "

How high would I need to mount one of these? Or could I use it at ground level?

I've been thinking for a 10M dipole why use 8 feet of wire?

Here's what I'm thinking,  8ft copper tubbing to replace the wires.  This could sit on-top of a couple 10' PVC pipes
"house-clamped" together and then hose clamped to a fence post. or the tree in my backyard.

I'm in the Salt Lake City valley, don't do well with heights and I want to play around on 10 meters would either of these work at ground level?

What I have right now is a 10M mobile antenna on the roof, and I'm not even picking up beacons. And yes I know we're low in the sunspot cycle, I'm not expecting miracles but simply SOMETHING better. If I could pick up a beacon I'd prolly wet myself! lol.

I just need something better then my mobile-verticle i have on the roof, it's simply picking up NOTHING.

20 feet up or so, would I need to guy the antenna ?

Because what I have now is mobile vertical on my roof and I'm not even able to pull in beacons with it.

Or I could grab this monster LOL.

Though I'm fairly certain I'm going to wait.

Anyone think this is worth the money at this lowpoint in the cycle?  I don't think I'd catch anything on 10M with this on my window sil.

Hence, I hesitate to spend much money, BUT, 25 dollar commercially made dipole for 10M isn't a bad idea, It's getting it up in the air.

I figure I can get two 10' pieces of HEAVY-DUTY PVC and join them together "hose-clamp" it against a fence post and guy it with 3/16 Dacron, toss a tennis ball over the roof with a bit of twine drag the rope over and secure it in the front yard.

One of these should do:

The band being dead right now makes me hesitate in investing two much time or money.

A tower someday sure.

The antenna is nowhere near any source of interferences.

I think the next thing I'm going to try and do is get a 10M dipole 20 or 30 feet in air because ATM I'm not picking ANYTHING up.
45  eHam Forums / Elmers / The sounds of "HF" on: March 16, 2007, 07:53:43 PM
Maybe I should move the radio away from the computer it's sitting next to and off of the top of the Astron PS.
