1  eHam Forums / CW / RE: Can I learn CW with LCWO.net? on: Today at 01:22:49 AM
I have found, that JLMC runs perfectly fine under wine.
2  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: multi-band hf vertical, as usual on: March 11, 2013, 05:00:28 AM
A similar Antenne is described here: http://www.mydarc.de/dk7zb/Vertikal/tripleleg.htm

Portable does mean different things to different people, it is all what you define it for yourself. For me personally, portable does mean, I can carry it at least 1km all my myself, in one trip (ie from car to operation position).

Everything more, I call transportable.

In Europe, hamnet is happening: http://db0fhn.efi.fh-nuernberg.de/doku.php?id=projects:wlan:hamnet

5  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: New wire or vertical antenna... on: September 11, 2012, 11:22:34 PM
Horizontal Dipole Antennas, it depends on height above ground. If you can manage to get them 3/8 wavelengths above ground, they will equal the vertical likely for DX, higher beat it (broadside to the wire!)

It is not take off angle that matters, but energy radiated/received, at the takeoff angle that the DX signals come from.
6  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: HF verticals, recommendations on: September 11, 2012, 11:15:56 PM
Elevated or ground mounting?

Elevated, I would look at Cushcraft R8, Hy-Gain AV-640, or even the new AV-680.

Ground mounted, Any trap vertical with a nice number of radials in the ground.

Das vollständige Druckwerk ist als PDF-Datei auf der im Juni 2003 erschienenen CD der AGCW e.V. zu finden.

That is the interesting bit. Telling you his work is contained on the June 2003 CD of the AGCW, in the form of a PDF. Would be quite interesting to take a read I guess.

Hello,

Googling around for a few minutes, I found the following: http://books.google.lu/books/about/Arbeitspsychologische_Untersuchung_der_T.html?id=yN8ktwAACAAJ&redir_esc=y

The title reads 'Arbeitspsychologische Untersuchung der Tätigkeit bei der Aufnahme von Morsezeichen: Zugleich ein neues Anlernverfahren für Funker'

I would translate that as: Occupational psychological examination of the process of reading Morse Code: At the same time a new way of learning that process for radio operators.

Now, if one would be able to peek inside his work...
9  eHam Forums / Satellites / RE: Alternative to "15 Seconds of Fame"? on: August 14, 2012, 01:27:36 AM
AO-40 was awesome... After it went dead, Used the lower earth orbit satellites a bit, but fast lost interest... just to boring.

Maybe P3E will fly one day, maybe not. Either way, I think chances are, it will be the last one trying to even get into an higher orbit, so worth supporting.
10  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / RE: I HATE Ubuntu 12.04 ! on: July 31, 2012, 04:28:49 AM
I enjoy 12.04, with the Unity interface. As computing should be done, if you actually want to work on a machine. Virtualbox with windows 7 in it just runs fine, as does cqrlog and fldigi. I use Ubuntu since a couple of years now, upgraded from one version to the next one without doing fresh installs, and see no reason to change.
11  eHam Forums / Digital / RE: Rig advice. on: July 31, 2012, 02:15:23 AM
The TS-590 is a lot of radio for the money, and is what I would suggest to you. For digital modes all you need is the software, and connect the radio using it's USB port, as it provides also an soundcard for the PC.

Hello,

Take a look here: http://www.w1hkj.com/LaunchpadInstall.html

Failure proof to get the most recent version installed in Ubuntu. Works fine for me since a while.

I use 4nec2 under wine, works really nice. My Eznec doesnt run with wine, complains about currupted installation once I do start it.
14  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: HRD to cost: Why don't more Hams embrace the Open Source model? on: March 13, 2012, 02:00:31 AM
Looks a bit like in this thread, the people are confusing free and free (one meaning freedom, the other one as free as in beer).

That being said, I think there is nothing wrong in having to pay for a piece of software. Do not like it, do not buy/use it. (Just the same as with other services/products). Now one thing I really dislike proprietary protocols in digital modes as used on the ham bands. That notion does not really sound compatible, with other stuff in amateur radio. There is not really a need of freely available source code, if you have access to a protocol description that does enable you to implement your own modem.

Hello,

Switch the windows user interface to Windows 7 Basic (or any not Aero interface) and you will see the gray areas. I had the same issue, and took me ages to figure that one out.
