1  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / Yeasu FT-7800R on: October 16, 2007, 08:22:26 AM
I think it's easier to buy the program and USB cable for your computer.  Then you can change anything that you want and just download it to the 7800.  You can even save multiple configurations and change if you are traveling.

I bought mine here http://www.g4hfq.co.uk/ great service and a good program.  I have no connection other than being a satisfied customer.
2  eHam Forums / Licensing / Sequence of FCC processing on: May 02, 2007, 06:54:15 AM
Thanks, Dee

I called the ARRL.  The paper work they received didn't match my CSCE.  I emailed my CSCE and they are working on it.

3  eHam Forums / Licensing / Sequence of FCC processing on: May 02, 2007, 05:45:52 AM
A few weeks ago I took advantage of the automatic upgrade to General (I have a pre 1987 Tech) and passed the Extra test.  The FCC's site shows that I am now listed a General effective 4/29. Not Extra.

I'm wondreing do they have some system that requires them to do the paperwork and data upgrade in sequence.
I  know that I can write and ask them but you are a faster turnaround.  I don't want to stir the FCC pot unless I have to.
4  eHam Forums / VHF / UHF / Remote head for Yaesu FT-7800 on: April 22, 2007, 09:23:01 AM
I'm most likly going to buy one of these when I get back from vacation.  I'm considring the mount for my Ford Ranger.

What is the approx diameter of the cable that goes to the remote head.  I mean: about half inch and stiff like RG-8? or, thin like RG-58?

I'm trying to decide if I should get the remote or just mount the radio.
5  eHam Forums / Antenna Restrictions / Trailer park stealth antenna on: April 01, 2007, 08:07:41 AM
I don't live in a mobile home but I was just reading through this and had a wild Idea.

Why not use your car.  Get the best antenna setup that you can for what ever band you want to work and mount it on your car. In most of the parks that I have seen cars are parked fairly close to the home. Fix the coax so that you can easily run it from the car to your inside radio.  The plus is that when you get a mobile rig you can use the antenna for both.  You get a little loss and inconvenience with the extra connectors but you can work around that.
6  eHam Forums / VHF / UHF / ft 60 aa battery packs on: March 26, 2007, 06:31:20 AM
I have one also.  I think this has been covered here before, and I called the VERTEX teck support.

You are OK to use the rechargables but don't charge them in the radio. If you use an external charger you'll be OK.  The tech also said that it was "probably" OK leave the radio plugged into the cigarette plug for a day if you are using it with the YAESU rechargable pack.  I plan to use the FR-25A with no cells in it when I'm plugged in.

That is really good.  Now I can work on the Extra.
The $20 I spent on the study guide was worth it for that one sentence alone.

I'm excited to get back in the game.

I'm reactivating after many years of silence.  However I have kept my license up to date.

I bought and was reading the ARRL license manual and read-- "Individuals qualified....before March 21,1987 will be able to upgrade to Gen by presenting documentation to a VEC."  (page 13-2)

Questions:
1) Is this still true?  My tech 03/09/1984.
2) I have a copy of the original.  do you think the FCC can validate it?
3) Should I start studying for Extra?? LOL

I was also a BSEE many years ago so the technical part is not to dificult.  Some of my best friends are surprised at that.
I'd appreciate your thoughts.
9  eHam Forums / Elmers / Mic for FT-60R on: March 10, 2007, 09:04:39 AM
I have a FT-60R comming on the "BIG Brown Truck" And I dug out my ancient Yaesu Ft-208R.  I have a speaker mic and the headset attachment for the 208.  I've been looking on the net for a conversion cable to go from the 6-pin of the 208 to the 4 conductor mini plug of the 60R.  Also can't find the pin-out for either of these.

I'd be happy for any sources or ideas that you might have.  I'm not eager to buy all new stuff if I can get this to work.
10  eHam Forums / Elmers / An FT-60R for my motorcycle?? on: March 07, 2007, 08:10:34 AM
Thanks, Mike.
I'm planning a trip in May from VT-Miss-Texas-Michigan and home. I'll be camping much of the time and may not have 110v to recharge the HT. When I get the FT-60R I plan to run some tests to see how much charging the HT and the tablet computer draws down the MC battery.  I know I could calculate all that but actual emperical date is easier.  I'm concerned about running the HT on bat all day and then not being able to recharge at night.

I'm glad to hear about the carwash dunking.  I won't be so concerned about a few rain drops.

I don't plan any transmitting ability  while riding.  I have the SERIUS radio,GPS and now HT connected to a mixing amp.
11  eHam Forums / Elmers / An FT-60R for my motorcycle?? on: March 06, 2007, 03:39:40 PM
Thanks Clint,
I'll order the battry case also.

Since the Specs say "6 to 16v", I take it that I can just connect it to the motorcycle system.  Or, by regulated powersupply do you mean an actual regulated supply.  I doubt that I would install one on the bike.
The bike system runs about 10 to 14 volts.

12  eHam Forums / Elmers / An FT-60R for my motorcycle?? on: March 06, 2007, 02:33:18 PM
I’ve been inactive for about 10 years but I have decided it’s time to get back in.  I’m considering a FT-60R to carry along on my motorcycle.  I’m planning a fairly long trip in the spring and the off band capability would be nice while I’m riding.    Using the HT in the evenings would be fun.  I have an audio amp to combine the output from the HT and my GPS.  I know that I’ll need the Yaesu dongle to split out the audio.

But I have a couple questions:
1)   I’ve read on the reviews portion of this site some stuff that implies that leaving the FT-60R HT connected to 12v (12 to 13.4) will over charge the battery pack and shorten it’s life.  Also the user’s manual says not to leave the NC88 wall charger connected for long periods of time.  SO--Is it true that Yaesu has sent this out with out any charge regulating circuits?Huh  I’d appreciate any insight that you have on this issue.

2)   Since I’m hoping to listen to the off band stuff as I ride, how is the reception and quality???  I don’t expect “HI-FI” etc. but a talk show might be nice.

Thanks for whatever you can tell me.  It feels good to be getting back.
