I ran both a ts-50 and a 857 in a Toyota hylander and ford escape hybrid. Yes it was noisier than non hybrid. But it was totally usable. I did most talking while mobile, not parked. I worked many countries and states. In the fall of 2011 when the bands were on fire I worked so much dx it got boring. I was mostly on 17 or 10m some 20m. I was using a mag mount antenna with ham sticks too. I know that is not recommended and I know with a real antenna I would do better....but anything is better than nothing to me. I say go for it.

How far are you from a digipeater? I thought mine was broken cause I could receive data but it wouldn't transmit. Then I realized I needed an amp. Then it worked better. Also. Make sure the GPS is turned on. I have had these problems....till I figured out it was me.

I traveled a LOT around the southeast this spring. Ran APRS and simplex most of the time. One time in Ft Walton beach I called and got 3 guys reply. Other times I heard conversations and joined or called and was answered. Most of the time I heard nothing though. I guess it has pockets.

All right. For som estrange reason I didn't use the radio for a week and when I turned it on it worked for 10 minutes. Didn't use it for another week and it has worked for 3 days. I'm glad it decided to work again but sure feel uneasy about it being reliable.

Yknow as strange as it sounds...When we are camping I make more contacts QRP on 20 m than 10m. Even when the band has been crouded I can hear people all over and noone answers me on 10m. Switch to 20 m and get contacts. strange.....That said I have placed a cb mag mount antenna on my air conditioner unit and worked stations on 10m from my driveway with my 817.

My HT was working fine...battery died while I was driving so I got home and charged it. Now I neither send or receive data. All settings are correct. HT still works for voice. GPS still works. E-mailed Kenwood. They had me do a full reset and it didn't fix it. Turned it off and left it for a week. turned it on tonight and got one ststion info but didn't send any then nothing. No more after the first. KW wants me to send it in for repair. I'm kinda bummed that I'm gonna have to pay so much to get it working again. Anyone ever seen anything like this or have any suggestions on how to fix it?

Ok. On the trip now. I brought them both. From the eighteenth floor with wireless and all the other noise the 817 is useless. The ts 50 has been alright. Worked Russia. Canada. Italy etc. Lots of antenna experiments. Works best with a 15m dipole as a sloper. Will try the ts 50 with 10 watts but not promising. I bet if I carried the 817 to the beach id do lots better.

Hello all. I am a die hard QRPer. I use my 817 every chance I can. Campouts hotels, even in the driveway while my kids ride their bikes. HOWEVER.... I am going to the beach next week with the family..and more family...I have been trying to sell them on HAM radio for years. We will all be in the same condo. On the 18th floor, with a balcony looking over the gulf. Should I take the 817 and PAR EF 10/20/40 to use or the TS 50 and a dipole? Only one rig will go. What to do?

Bbusy with work and forgot to check here..... I was given the Johnson relay switch so I have problem trying something else. Anyone have any hints on where I can find something? Been looking and I'm not seeing anything. Do I need a Dowkey? Remember, When I get this working it will be the first AM or boatanchor station I have seen in use. In other words, I am teaching myself.
