16  eHam Forums / Boat Anchors / RE: Muting the speaker on: May 17, 2012, 07:17:29 PM
Bbusy with work and forgot to check here.....  I was given the Johnson relay switch so I have problem trying something else.  Anyone have any hints on where I can find something?  Been looking and I'm not seeing anything.  Do I need a Dowkey?  Remember, When I get this working it will be the first AM or boatanchor station I have seen in use.  In other words, I am teaching myself.

You need to increase your budget.  For a plate modulated am rig id get a valiant.

I have a Kenwood THd72A and love it.  Battery could last longer....but we all say that.  Very easy to use and will pick up a signal anywhere.  I really like the USB port and the fact that the software is free.  I have a VX7R which is great ...but for APRS the Kenwood is what I like best.

Thank you all.  I am actually trying to use the HT37 for AM, until I get the Valiant working again.  My problem is when I talk, I get really bad feedback from the speaker.

I am currently setting up a Ht 37 and Hammarlund HQ140x.  I have a Johnson T/R switch box between them.  How exactly do I wire these things up to mute the speaker when I transmit?  Please be exact because this is all new to me.  I don't see any terminals labeled mute on the transmiter so I need help.

Thanks
21  eHam Forums / APRS / RE: Newby APRS Help on: February 27, 2012, 09:46:19 AM
It is working now.  I have GPS turned off because there is no GPS hooked up.  I manually entered my coordinates.  Anyways I am now showing up on the map so I guess it is fixed.

Thanks

I bought a used KEnwood TH D710a recently.  I do not have it hooked to a GPS yet but did enter my coordinates.  I receive APRS data fine.  What I am having a problem with is, how do I make it send my info?  I have read the manuals...but when I go to aprs.fi I am not there.  Is there some easy setting I am missing?  I have GPS set to off.
23  eHam Forums / Boat Anchors / RE: A few Drake TR-4C questions. on: February 20, 2012, 07:27:07 PM
I also had that problem when looking for the manual....couldn't find it.

That will help though.

I don't use the noise blanker so I don't know

I tune mine with a watt meter.  There is a process outlined in the manual.  However....I just turn the knobs until I get the output that I want.  Easy and fast.
24  eHam Forums / SWL (Shortwave Listening) / RE: which receiver do you use ? on: February 08, 2012, 05:45:22 PM
Main in the House is a Drake SW4A.  In the shop I have a few Hallicrafters but really enjoy the Hammarlund HQ140.
For traveling and hotels I got a Grundig G8.  I have found it doesn't work to well in most hotels.
25  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / RE: Magnet Mounts....Just how safe are they???? on: November 13, 2011, 07:20:55 PM
I have used Mag mounts (5" type) for 10 years and never lost one.  And I drive 50-60K a year.  With a small 3" mag, I have had them fall.  I now only use a 5" mag mount and use 40m-10m whips.  I use the mini ones, so that may be why they don't fall.
26  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: Carrying HT on commercial flight on: October 21, 2011, 06:53:59 PM
I've flown multiple times with my 817, Z817 tuner and coax and wire in my backpack.  No problem at all.  One time had to run the tuner through the x-ray again.  I always carry an HT with me.  Then I can listen to air traffic while I wait.
27  eHam Forums / Boat Anchors / RE: Drake TR4C Question on: September 30, 2011, 07:19:04 PM
I am by no means an expert.  I have other tube rigs and know how to tune them.  I just got into them this summer so I have a lot to learn still.  I have never checked the HV or anything else with a probe.  I do have the equipment to do so.  I just received the rig yesterday.  Previous owner said it was doing 150 watts output.  Just messed with it again and now was able to dip the plate and output on xcw was 75 watts.  what is confusing to me is when I switch it to xcw the plate current on the meter jumps then declines without me touching anything.
28  eHam Forums / Boat Anchors / RE: Drake TR4C Question on: September 30, 2011, 06:40:50 PM
I am not getting the meter to cooperate with me.  So I was using a wattmeter to tune it.  Plate current wasn't moving up much for me to dip and load had no effect.  What exactly should I look at cleaning?
29  eHam Forums / Boat Anchors / RE: Drake TR4C Question on: September 30, 2011, 02:54:47 PM
Actually, I tried it again and have no power.  So I'm assuming the tubes are bad.  Probably why I couldn't tune it.
30  eHam Forums / Boat Anchors / RE: Drake TR4C Question on: September 30, 2011, 01:55:44 PM
No I am not sure.  I tried to follow their directions and am lost.  I can tune my other tube rigs fine and they make sence.  I push in the load and it doesn't seem to do anything.  Help would be appreciated.
