31  eHam Forums / Boat Anchors / RE: Drake TR4C Question on: September 30, 2011, 01:55:44 PM
No I am not sure.  I tried to follow their directions and am lost.  I can tune my other tube rigs fine and they make sence.  I push in the load and it doesn't seem to do anything.  Help would be appreciated.

33  eHam Forums / Boat Anchors / Drake TR4C Question on: September 30, 2011, 01:02:39 PM
Recently got this rig.  When I tune it up, on the watmeter the power starts at 100 watts or so then as it is still in xcw power drops.  I am not used to drakes, but don't think this is normal.  So in lack of better terms, shouldn't it be able to hold a steady wattage output?

I worked Tokyo from teh Applebees parking lot with 100w on a mag mount antenna. Grin  And there was a pileup.
35  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / RE: Common HF Mobile Frequencies on: June 25, 2011, 06:46:55 PM
I operate HF mobile everyday.  I enjoy 17 the most and have worked LOTS of DX on it.  10M is good too when it's open.  I use a LDG Z100plus tuner and can easily tune 20m on my 17m whip.  I have worked 40m some while mobile but usually just special event stations.  17 Mobile is where it is.
36  eHam Forums / QRP / RE: Which portable antenna wouls you get? on: June 03, 2011, 07:55:17 PM
I have a Par End fed 10-20-40.  I have talked to DX stations on 17m on it also so don't count it out.  My 817 and tuner...If I can tune it.. I'll try to work it.

Yes, I have done it myself before.  It will work.

I just finally broke down today and climbed the tree...dragging a rope behind me.  Worked well.
40  eHam Forums / Elmers / THF-6A help on: December 02, 2010, 06:25:04 PM
I have had this radio for 8 or 9 years.  Where I used to live I used 70cm a lot but for the last 4 haven't.  I tried to get into a few 440 repeaters and have to be very close even when on High power.  I can key the same repeaters with 1/2 watt on my 817.  So I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this and if it is fixable.  I am using a Diamond SRH 320A.  I broke my OE antenna, and it's replacement, so this is my only antenna to try it with.  My FM radio station reception is awful also.  I am looking for any help or advise you may have.  Thanks

Well, I bought a 817 and EF 10/20/40 months ago to use in hotels and that didn't work out so well.  However I did take it with me on a Cub Scout campout a few weeks ago and threw the antenna up in a tree.  Got on 20m SSB and made a contact in VA.  Then heard a station in Toranto and called him.  He came back right away with a 5/6 signal.  This was on 17m with said antenna and a tuner, so I figure it was less than the 2.5 watts I had.  That impressed the people around me.  Then last weekend I took a CB mag mount, stuck it to my heat pump and worked OR on 10m SSB.  This is addicting.
42  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Radio continuity help on: August 11, 2010, 06:07:02 PM
I thank you all for your help.  I'd like to understand the science behind it.  When I have a length of coax and the shield and conductor show continuity, there is a short and my SWR is high.  When the 239 connector shows the same, I reason that it will become a short between the shield and conductor, and that is bad.  That is why I mentioned the SWR.  It is only this way on the HF plug.  When I hook a cable between the rig and an SWR meter, the 239 on the SWR meter to antenna shows continuity  and when the rig is unhooked the 239 is fine.

I will try to study the schematics and may be back with more questions.
43  eHam Forums / Elmers / Radio continuity help on: August 11, 2010, 01:18:25 PM
My Yaesu 857 shows continuity between the power and ground section of the SO239 .  SWR is 1.3 but I can't figure out why.  Radio still works fine but this bothers me.  Any ideas?

There is a plug on th epassenger side frame.  If you open the door you will see it.  Run wires through it and under the carpet.  Thats what I did.  There supposedly is a hookup near the glovebox for wiring accessories but I never found it.
