Emilse, I have had reasonably good luck using the mount system Alan describes on two different vehicles. Just remember good engineering practices when installing it and verify good grounding of the bracket and while it wont be 'perfect', you should have no major problems at all. Enjoy the hobby and a very 73! Eric kk7ue

RE k2gw: This is the way we are doing it in Oregon also. Basic training in ARES, RACES when and if it becomes necessary. Too bad I have to leave the program to chase the almighty dollar. I will miss it sorely. See QRZ bio for details (sorry eham!) de kk7ue

eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / HF in Semi trucks

Hi kids. It seems I will be embarking on my third career in last 20 years, driving long haul truck. Once I get my own truck, I want to run HF with screwdriver. Any of you out there have experience with this? I will use an Icom 706 IIg and a kj7u antenna. Im wondering what quirks you may have run into with this sort of arrangement. I wont be leaving for training till first week of August, so let me know what you have experienced please. Thank you and see you on the bands! 73, eric kk7ue

Thanks guys for the input! My (perceived?) problem is that a screwdriver vertical is not true NVIS. I am leaning more towards the bent whip idea. I wish those army humvees would slow down a little so I could get a close look at their systems <grin>. Tnx, 73

I am interested in operating mobile NVIS (75 & 40) from my 95 Nissan 4x4 pu. Not portable - I want to be able to operate on the fly with NVIS. Any input is appreciated, thanks!

Possibly Hoodview ARC, Gresham, Oregon. I know they have a military comm trailer and it has been out for field day. Their URL is www.wb7qiw.org. Good luck, I hope that is what you needed. 73 eric kk7ue

eHam Forums / Elmers / 2m/70cm SWR meter suggestions?

Not knowing anything about the MFJ model referenced above, I can't say one way or the other about it. I'm sure it is a fine instrument. I can say from personal experience that the Yaesu YS-500, 140-525Mhz SWR/Wattmeter does a fine job for me. Its power ranges are 0-4 watts, 0-20 watts and 0-200 watts. It does require a 4 watt or better input for accurate SWR readings. It does not require an external power source for it to operate, unlike the HF version YS-60. All this coming from an ICOM fanatic. My suggestion is to buy the best you can afford and have FUN! CUL, 73 eric

eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / 'M' mounts

Oh boy. After careful analysis and deliberations with my Elmer, it has been brought to my attention that I was seeing the seemingly errant readings due to the matching network apparently built into the base of this antenna. Very clever of them to include this in the design. Once I saw it on paper it made perfect sense. Thank you wa7axo. Now if I can get my brain to match up as well........ 73

Where can I find information on 'M' mounts? I purchased a Comet V/UHF mobile antenna and the continuity of the PL259 is backwards to what I would have expected. The pin is isolated and the threads are hot to the whip. This seems backwards to what the SO239 on the rig is doing. Help! Thanks, 73 eric
