How are you determining this? Not to insult,  but that rig has power options and maybe set for the lowest (5 watt) setting.

33  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / Chain link fence post as antenna mount?Good or bad on: October 18, 2007, 01:09:06 PM
Dad, K3YSG did this at 2 different homes, he chose to use no radials at either. One worked rather well, the other, barely.
Mechanically if the posts are properly mounted in concrete you may be OK, if not you'd do well to guy it.
34  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / Antenna lofting - better than a slingshot? on: October 16, 2007, 12:05:18 PM
As mentioned your 1/2 ounce weight isn't enough, you really need an ounce as a minimum.

37  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / MAST for HEXBEAM-will this work safely?? on: September 29, 2007, 10:11:53 PM
I mounted a home brew hex beam with rotator on an aluminum mast similar to your design.  It was quite a bear to get it up and guyed. I cant imagine that it will be stable enough without guys to last long. Your looking at 19 feet of mast plus the rotator and the antenna itself swinging around up there.
If you use thin "construction Line" for your guying you would not even see it from very far. But no guying is silly to me, just inviting  a disaster.
I would also bet that wik's suggestion would be only presented with the expectation that the tower would be installed according to manufacturers specs, not just using a hole cause its already done.

38  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / Trees for antenna on: September 29, 2007, 09:55:17 PM
Expect the top of that tree to move 5-10 feet in all directions over the course of time. Your pole better be mounted to accommodate such movement.

   Nice wife, hope your worthy.
40  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / Where to Purchase 18 Gauge Guy Wire? on: September 21, 2007, 07:02:26 AM
Is wire necessary ?  and in that size ?    I have several 40 foot masts an all have only every been guyed with rope/string. I am looking at 25 years experience. Now I do replace the line periodically* but its cheap, readily available, and easy to work with.
I generally look for spools of the stuff at HD or Lowes.  Last one was perhaps 500 feet for less than 10.00.

        * 3-5 years or so.
41  eHam Forums / Station Building / New ham needs help with planning shack on: September 15, 2007, 10:44:25 PM
I would opt for number 2 as well. If it were me I wouldn't want to be that far from the rest of the house and family during non working hours. The office should not be occupied beyond normal hours. As far as conflicts with the neighbor hams I would not worry about it unless a problem presents itself. Not likely that you will share interests to that extent as there is so many ways to enjoy radio.
Another option would be both 2 and 3 many hams have rigs throughout the house. I have a standby hf set up in my guest room in addition to the basement shack.

Dollar store,  small resin cutting boards.
43  eHam Forums / Station Building / Rig vs. monitor placement dilemma...... on: September 13, 2007, 07:26:45 PM
Rig on desk, monitor above it, both directly in front of my operating position.
44  eHam Forums / Station Building / antenna tuner power cord missing on: September 13, 2007, 07:23:20 PM
Supply it with 12 volts, give or take, and you should be fine. But as wik says totally unnecessary.
45  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / Aluminum straps wanted on: August 23, 2007, 09:53:05 AM
Can you get an aluminum pole from a pool supply place and flatten the pole to make your straps? Some of these can be 12 feet or more.
