468/14.250 will get you in the ball park = 32.84ft, then divide by 2 for each leg = 16.42ft

2  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: safe paint for painting a mobile antenna ?? on: May 15, 2013, 01:25:06 PM
Any paint without metal -bought spray can at hardware store, painted mine tan to fit in surroundings - I think they make Camo also. Look at the background behind whip & paint it that color. I'm in the same HOA BS. 73 K1WJ David
3  eHam Forums / QRP / RE: To QRP or not to QRP on: May 09, 2013, 02:19:08 PM
Glad to see you got a 100w radio - wise choice for starting out.
Last week contacted a QRP station that answered my cq call - after 3 replies I got his call, 3 more times to get his name & state.....after that stated 73's & hope next time we contact I hope you have a 100w radio......
Contacts can be difficult at times on 100watts especially if your antenna is not ideal for the band in use. Next time you make some contacts with 100 watts, at some point in the QSO turn down to 5watts & ask the other station to do the same, you will see what your missing.......73 K1WJ David
4  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: Ohm's Law on: May 09, 2013, 11:59:12 AM
Last I knew it was still E=IR, V for voltage - no big deal, still calculates the same. 73 K1WJ David
5  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: How well will a MFJ 1728B 6M mag mount on cookie sheet work for DX? on: May 01, 2013, 02:35:21 PM
How about a MFJ 6m hamtenna dipole - 2 mobile 6m hamtennas on a dipole mount, good swr for all of ssb section & great efficiency - simple & easy. Total price $50+-. Run some 9913 coax as short as possible to get the job done, 2-3 turns on 4.5in form for coax choke close to feedpoint.

OK, did not mean to make you feel bad - are you using ladder line or coax with G5RV?
If coax at radio, about 6-8ft from radio - take coax & put 10-12 turns around a 4.5 inch form to create a choke - I think this may help. 73 K1WJ Cool

Easy: Since your a Tech. go back to the 10m dipole - Fixed. 73 K1WJ Grin
8  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Tuning Multi Band Antenna on: April 17, 2013, 03:06:03 PM
A rigid trap dipole is the same as the Hustler 4BTV vertical
Because the 1st section of tube & trap from feed point is 10m.
The adjustment of 10m will effect the adjustment of tubes & traps for the lower bands beacuse they are additive. Look up the cushcraft D3 install instructions = a trap dipole.
Again the Hustler 4btv vertical install applies the same principals.
Just do it..........73 K1WJ David
9  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Tuning Multi Band Antenna on: April 17, 2013, 02:06:56 PM
Start at the bottom of the antenna - 10m then 15m then 20m then 40m. Go to DX Engineering site & down load the Hustler 4BTV install instructions - that is how you do it, your dimensions will be different but basic principles still apply. 73 K1WJ David
10  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: multi-band vertical on: March 27, 2013, 09:30:50 AM
I have a 20m vertical with one elevated 20m 1/4w radial 4ft off the ground.
The radial is to the east side, make just as many contacts to the west.

How high will antenna be?

Ground mounted allows you to put as many radials & length that will fit.

If elevated 2 feet or higher at base of antenna, one 1/4w radial per band will work, even if all all on the same side, fan out a few inches from each other.

12  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: 40m 1/4 wave vertical what to expect on: March 11, 2013, 12:49:19 PM
On 40m with 40 1/4w radials should work real good, more in the clear the better, - would not expect too much out of 17m or 15m. 73 K1WJ David

I also have a TS-50 - just keeps on ticking.......
TS-50 to a TS-590s sounds like the perfect upgrade - can not go wrong for price/performance.

14  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: inside whip antenna - how bad? alternatives? on: March 08, 2013, 07:32:34 AM
Ideal short wave antenna could be let's say 120ft to 240ft long - how long is your whip - 8.5ft at the most. Antenna's outside work better. Put up a 75m dipole at 119ft in length with the apex 33ft off the ground - I bet your short wave is alot better - even a 75m dipole at 6ft off the ground will smoke-check your whip in the house. Any noise floor above s-3 is bad in my opinion. I'm lucky to have always had a low noise floor - hope that dont change any time soon.

15  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Antenna suggestions on: February 16, 2013, 08:54:12 PM
How about a MFJ-1979 17ft telescoping vertical - can work 1/4 wave 6m-20m as set up. Use a single elevated radial cut for band in use & adjust vertical length to suit. Can mount as low as 2ft off the ground. Mine is set at 17ft for 20m with single elevated 1/4 w 20m radial - 4ft off the ground. See pics QRZ.com under K1WJ call. Worked UA0KBU in Russia with mine, 45 minutes ago. This antenna will retract to two ft when not in use. $59. No Traps / Coils - Efficient 1/4w  Good to Go.
