eHam Forums / Elmers / Coax Balun Turns per band?
|
on: April 24, 2011, 07:33:27 PM

Im hooking up a 2m/440 J pole - 3 turns of coax on 6 inch form about right? I also need amount of turns on 17M. Anywhere on the net that has a chart or something that states turns per band - or length of coax per band - on a coax balun UHF to HF? I had a reference but cant find it, and only want to do this job once..... 73 - David - K1WJ - ARIZONA

Go with a 4-BTV with 32 ground radials at 33ft each in your back yard. Easy to add 12m & 17m with low cost mod. Not DX-Engineering solution. Just add 1/4 wave wires from base of btv with metal clamps - to cap hat / insulator rope side - - moved away from main element at base with non conducting pvc about 8-12 inches. Easy. Now its a 6 band BTV......Have made contacts on 12m & 17m no problem - great bandwidth. 73 K1WJ Dave

I have the 2m/220 ht overall not bad, only issue is in fm radio broadcast mode speaker pops - most of their hts do this to some degree, the s-meter reads full at any signal level - some gimmicky features you really do not need. Communicates just fine, good audio, good battery, nice price 107, howerver not as well refined like lets say a Yaesu....This is for sure. I must admit Im interested in a 2m/220 radio maybe Wouxun will make one. 73 David K1WJ

eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Best antenna to make an HT the best that it can be

The best for an FM HT would be a vertical polarized beam as high as you can get it, ( I'm thinking, based on your question, you want an outside antenna) Use coax good for vhf like 9913, make coax run as short as required to get to antenna. The more elements the beam has = more gain in pointed direction - that would get the most out of your 5w HT. Cushcraft makes some nice 2m/440 beams. 73 K1WJ David

eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Hamstick Efficiency vs. Operating Band

"Often" as in "every couple minutes as polarization rotates" or "often" as "permanently, on particular stations?"
The MFJ hamstick dipole is less than 30 ft high, it "permanently" will outperform my 4btv with 30 ground radials.
The dipole nulls are north/south - My station is in MI. QSO into California, Japan, Europe, 20m hamstick dipole is better. I've had it up for about a year now. It would make a great portable antenna.
Hope that clarifies.....David

I have a 20m hamstick dipole from MFJ, and a 20m hamstick I use moble with my TS-50. Works well.
Often the 20 hamstick dipole at less than 30ft will beat out my 4BTV ground mounted vertical with 30 ground radials by 1-3 s units.
Hamsticks are decent for 6m,10m,12m,15m,17m & 20m.
Bands lower than 14mhz - 40 / 80m - not too hot. I like full size dipoles for these bands even if appex only 1/8 to 1/4 wave above ground respectively.

Make sure you get a copy of the band plan that shows the modes & where they are used. Some will have a calling freq. & so on. Generally look for a clear freq. with no activity with in 3khz so you have some seperation. 73 K1WJ David
