61  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Firestik-style mobile antennas paired as a dipole? on: June 18, 2012, 08:25:01 AM
They work good - Try the MFJ 347 Dipole mount - or the MFJ 2220 comes with 2 20m HF sticks & dipole mount.
Have used myself the 6m/17 & 20m versions - all work good for quick limited space set ups.
The 20m version at 27ft high would generally out perform a Hustler 4BTV with 32 ground radials.
6m through 20m versions works decent - cant speak about 40/80m - did not think it was worth tryng.

62  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Why the Bladed Spiders on 5BTV Vertical? on: May 23, 2012, 02:43:39 PM
Capacity hats will reduce the amount of inductance necessary to resonate the antenna, and increase bandwidth. But contrary to popular belief they add nothing to the radiation resistance. For a component of an antenna to increase radiation resistance it must itself radiate.

It is true if you put a Capacity hat on top of a short mobile antenna it will change the antennas efficiency but what happens is the current on the radiating element moves further up to the top.

Because the current is now further away from ground this lowers ground loss. So the ratio of radiation resistance to ground loss and Omni Loss resistance, which is the reduction in the amount of inductance needed for the loading coil, goes down.

Joe,

I just ordered one - mine will be ground mounted with 16 ground radials of various lengths in back yard of AZ HOA.
Should work great on 6-20m - adjusted for 1/4 wave. Will submit review here in a month or so.

Soldering them together is fine - the current will go to the correct wire based on frequency.

On 20m at the radio - once transmit - current will go to the 16.5ft wires.

On 10m - it will go to the 8.5ft wires.

Good to use a insulated separator - to keep wires away from each other - close to feedpoint - where soldered.

Wires will be inverted to some degree - top wires more flattop - than set below.

With inverted wire length for freq. should be about 5% shorter - than formula = 468/freg.

Try to get apex at 33ft minimum for 20m.

Made a few fan dipoles - always come out good.

67  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Eliminate RFI options on: April 18, 2012, 08:08:34 AM
Get a small plastic Folgers coffee can - wrap 6 turns of your coax around it - close to antenna feed point.

You could also make one on the radio side - with in 8ft of radio connection.

Run less power, if still issue - forget about an amp.

68  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / Whip length for both 2m & 440 on: April 16, 2012, 10:37:06 AM
Have whip with 3/8th male connector - low profile in hoa - 19inches for 2m+- ok ; what whip length for dual band 2m/440?
Base of this antenna is only going to be about 4ft off the ground - FM work. Additional ideas - recommendations?

69  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Ferrite Beads for coax current chokes #Type/Amount? on: April 12, 2012, 03:31:34 PM
Thanks for the links for info.

Is a 1000 ohm current choke the minimum to shoot for, 6m-20m range in operating freq?

70  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / Ferrite Beads for coax current chokes #Type/Amount? on: April 12, 2012, 10:54:14 AM
Coax is Andrew 240 - RG8X size - 240 lower loss on HF & otherwise than 8X.

Antenna is ground mounted adjustable whip for 6m to 20m with 16 ground radials.

Instead of making coax ugly balun - I would like to use snap-on ferrite beads to current choke.

What ferrite material #31 or #43 or #73. #31 is for wider freq. range? #73 can cause coax to burn/melt? #43 for 25mhz to 300mhz?

Is #31 good for 6-20m? #43 better?

Next, is how many to use just prior to antenna feedpoint? 6? 8?

Best place to obtain these ferrite snap-ons?

Any definitive answers? Thanks & 73 K1WJ David
71  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: How much space (kHz) is enough on SSB? on: March 21, 2012, 10:24:36 AM
5khz is standard in my operations

Any station using more than 4-5khz bandwidth is a disservice to the hobby in general.

A few of the stations are ridiculous - with hi-fi ssb & high power useage - Not good practice.

Look at reviews on Smiley 270A - Tri-Band HT antenna.

Has two types of connector versions.

Mine hooked to VX-3R - good to go.

For 10M openings - listen to CH. 6 or 11 on a cb - fruitcakes going crazy - 10m is open - chance of 6M open too. 10M for sure.

Cb good for something...........73 K1WJ David
